Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

@Oliphantitus it’s Krusteaze.

I’ve just bought some, plus Idahoan mashed potato, Suma concentrated apple juice, and a couple of dried non-fridge cheese. No idea how palatable it will be but needs must!

AlohaMolly · 26/02/2020 22:18

Re protein, I struggle to keep my levels up because I’m not a massive meat eater and we’re on a tight budget, so I was pleased to see that sweetcorn and peas are good for it too!

GorkyMcPorky · 26/02/2020 22:26

My Krusteaz is at the sorting office because it was too big to be left on the doorstep as RM usually do Confused

Also ordered powdered egg. There will be baking. OTOH if this doesn't hit, food banks will be inundated with dried goods!

CocoaLipbalm · 26/02/2020 22:27

@Sterristripoff I’d find it so hard to resist issuing hand gel, tissues and wipes to surrounding humans, while ordering them to cough/sneeze into their elbow area, while facing the other direction. And don’t even think about breathing in my vicinity!

Seriously, hope you’re discharged home soon.

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 22:33

@JiltedJohnsJulie we discovered the other day that toddler loo seats fit nicely over wide buckets. We could put it in an out building on property if we really were stuck. However seeing that it seems to spread really easily between families I think we will just accept once one of us has it we will all get it.

MotherOfDragonite · 26/02/2020 22:35

Yep, as a single mother of two children who are much too small to understand about germs and hygiene (the smallest of whom still breastfeeds) I've pretty much resigned myself to us all getting it if one of us gets it!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/02/2020 22:38

Thanks Tinned we used to have one if those seats but I stupidly got rid of it. May get DH to get another tomorrow.

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 22:46

@JiltedJohnsJulie we were actually having a clear out to store more supplies when we found ours we thought we had chucked it out ages ago. You should have seen my husband's face we suddenly his eye clocked the bucket. Grin

I can't remember which shop sells the wide buckets (either b&q or sainsburys) they were only 90p.

Destinysdaughter · 26/02/2020 22:49

On Newnight tonight

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 22:50

I got the infamous pancake mix at Costco today £9.40

Jilted John's Julie..

I've not heard covid has diarrhea as symptom?? Really?
We have 1 as well... What other back up loos are there?? Dh definitely won't allow workman portaloo in garden 😂😂.

Our is in bathroom but it's large.

Or should we be adding adult nappies to Grin

the list Confused

I bloody hope not

OfftoPenscome · 26/02/2020 22:54

Work had updated its rules on obligatory home working today. I share an office with someone who has been banished to home Today for 14 days after being in Italy last week. Problem is he was in for three days already!

Am considering taking my disinfectant spray
To work and giving our office a quick once over tomorrow! Especially the door handle etc.

Glad I did my big prep shop today.

EliK · 26/02/2020 22:56

The Idahoan mash has really good reviews.
I also only have one toilet. Also still worried about how quickly the virus would spread through my block of flats, could see it being a Diamond Princess situation. Nothing I can do about it!

Tinnednut · 26/02/2020 23:00

I've heard one of the first symptoms is diarrhea, think it's only a short phase. I think Dr John might have mentioned it too. And David Abel had a dodgy tummy whilst still in the ship and insisting he didn't have it.

I bought DD a pack of pull up just in case, it's a long time since she's worn them but she still fits a size 6.

Catmaiden · 26/02/2020 23:05

Checked my stash today and bought last few bits. I think we could manage eating pretty well for 6 weeks, plus a bit longer on weird mixes of tinned and dried food . By that point some of our fresh crops should be coming through, at least the undercover crops.
Will have emptied out the meat freezers if its 8 plus weeks, but am assuming we won't be looking at full on SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenarios.

Well stocked with loo roll, sanitisers, hand gel, household stuff, just got to pick up the last batch of inners for the masks, cat medication from the vets and chicken feed tomorrow .

I spent this afternoon sorting out grab bags in case any of us have to go to hospital, charging up power banks, sorting out power cables and other stuff. Also got out the wind up radios, lamps, torches and put them handy.

I've made a list of where I've put various supplies, just in case I'm the one that's too ill to fetch out stuff 🤣

I've also filled up some boxes with the longest dated supplies, and some of the treats and alcohol, and put them in an outbuilding. I don't want family using the longest dated stuff first or eating all the treats ! looking at you, DH,

Noticable today in shops that shelves were begining to look more empty of medicines, hand gel, loo roll, dried goods etc

DH was making fun of my prepping, a bit. After yesterday and today's news however, he's now very pleased I've been quietly prepping extra, on top of my usual stash.

Notmyideamovingon · 26/02/2020 23:06

We hot desk and there's a box of clinell wipes for cleaning phone mouse keyboard etc. at the end of the row always. Thought that was standard?

Catmaiden · 26/02/2020 23:11

Camping commode loo in another room?

I've also cleaned and prepped the farm caravan so if needed it could be an isolation suite.
Useful place to store surplus supplies, tinned food etc as well

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 23:16

I'd love caravan to use an an isolation suit.

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 23:18

I also got (in case it reminds anyone of something they might find useful)

several large tubs of nuts (bank card crying at that!)
5l Olive oil
Butter
•Hummus (love theirs)
•Olives
•Baba Ganoush
Large boxes of Jacobs crackers
Palmers body lotion
Baking rolls
Box of Borders individually wrapped biscuits (2 per packet) - easier not to over eat them
Pringles
Pack of fun size chocolate bars (in the hope it’ll satisfy the need without over eating chocolate- worth a try 🤣)
Paper for the printer (few jobs I can get done if I’m not unwell)
Scissors
Notepads
Box of Sistema containers (may get more yet)

Ziplock bags (I know but needs must - food needs to be well stored so it’s not wasted they’ll be used sparingly & reused where possible)

Laundry liquid (I had lots of gel pods, but thought some liquid would be handy for any small loads and with rubber gloves for hand washing if necessary - god help me)

Gutted they didn’t have any Coastal Cheese

• not very long use by dates, but we’ll start eating those straight away anyway & I’ll just pop in & pick up more as they get near the end.

Frustrating that lots of stuff had March/April used by dates - which if we needed to stay home from tomorrow would be fine & would get used, but it wasn’t stuff that will get used until we need to use it - while we can still buy fresh food. But obviously as we don’t know IF/when we’ll need to stay home feasibly not for a few months and last it’s use by - I don’t want to buy too much with relatively short use by dates 🤯

I wonder hope much notice we will get if we do have an ‘Italy’ style lock down situation?

discoballz · 26/02/2020 23:36

More details from DH. Apparently some virologists are predicting (in worst case scenario) 40 million people getting nCV in the U.K. 400,000 deaths.

AmelieTaylor · 26/02/2020 23:39

Just wrote a reply to lots of you, then went to look something up and lost it!

Urgh.

Pretendingtobeapsychokiller · 26/02/2020 23:43

Saw this on 4chan /pol at the end of Jan. Found a safe photo link.
It's obviously worse than we believed.
I brushed it off at the time.

ChipotleBlessing · 26/02/2020 23:53

That 4chan link might be more convincing if they hadn’t overplayed it with the virus jumping into Brazilian bats and back again. That’s... not how it works and would be an utterly bizarre thing to have modelled. Made up.

ChipotleBlessing · 26/02/2020 23:54

If it was airborne with R6, there’s be a lot of infected people on planes. There aren’t.

eeeyoresmiles · 27/02/2020 00:09

I think Neil Ferguson from Imperial College said that - the videos from him and the J-IDEA institute are well worth watching.
