Prepping for a pandemic...7

7th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

Acc to WHO diarrhoea is a possible symptom but not for everyone. The respiratory symptoms are the main ones.

There is no way I would isolate a family member within our own house anyway. If one of the family gets it, we will accept that we all get it. The emotional trauma of that would be likely more harmful than the actual virus. We are lucky to not have anyone immuno-compromised in the house mind.

Legoandloldolls · 27/02/2020 00:10

Anyone considering making a second loo out of a B&q bucket and toddler seat - please buy a few buckets and stack them.inside each other for extra strength. They are only 97p each and frankly who wants their £1 loo to collapse under their own weight?! 🤣🤣🤣

The last time we was all hideously ill I didnt lock the toilet door and ds run in and threw up over me while I sat on the loo 🤢🤢🤢 I felt so bad I just stripped off and crawled into bed.

Off to add adult nappies, porta loo and caravan to my list 😉 oh and lots of B&q buckets......

@CocoaLipbalmlive your user name, takes me right back to being 10 😋

Lovely house move 🏡 plenty of room to stock stuff & maybe a shed to put DH in the garden if he can’t follow the safe commuting/working outside the home rules 🤣 Mind you, if this all kicks off you might not need to worry about him contaminating the house- I doubt he’ll be there long enough 😫

@fearnotsnot. I saw some small freezers at Costco today, there’re not very expensive & I was tempted - but we seriously do not have anywhere to put one ...shit ‘lightbulb moment’ IF I order the fridge/freezer now (months away from being ready for it, in the new kitchen) an under counter (but not chest!) freezer could go where the under counter fridge is now -seriously thought about that after coffee in the morning thank you!

Garlic. I bought a tub of fresh garlic (in oil I think) at Costco this morning

@Sterristripoff. There’s always the option of using a pillow to suffocate her if she keeps coughing! No jury would convict you 😊

@Snowdropdelight. D&V as a symptom was mentioned ages ago, but I haven’t heard recently. I had NOT heard it was that bad though I wonder if it’s still the case? If so, might need more immodium (only bought one box & some diaoralyte & plenty of loo roll).

@OfftoPenscome

WRAF was he in the office??

’Considering’?? Jesus I’d have the full kit ready to take in -sprays/wipes/mask/hand gel.

Full hazmat suit & full face mask

I actually think the company should have had someone in overnight to clean & disinfect PROPERLY your entire office & all communal areas

Effieray · 27/02/2020 01:10

And...
This is why we prep.

Comments on the original Facebook show that video is over a year old. Attached screenshot of the original article from May 2018. It's right that prepping reduces the amount of people all wanting to buy supplies at once though, I wouldn't like to be among that type of chaos.

MASKS

So, I finally bit the bulletin and ordered a reuseable mask - well 3 to be precise

I have a LOT of sanding to do (renovating the house) and hadn’t been wearing a mask because it was too claustrophobic, hot & generally horrible. I initially thought the filtered ones looked too ‘serious’ for what I needed, but had come to the conclusion I really should get one,as I might finish myself off sanding the whole place with no mask 😖

I hate not being able to go somewhere & try them on

Because of the sanding & the hassle of trying to get the mask & safety goggles to do their individual jobs, but alongside each other, I wanted one unit mask& goggles

However, they’re very clearly made for men and were very ‘gappy’ under my chin if the goggle parts was in place and too high up my forehead if the masks were in place 🙄

I also got the JSP Forces 8 P3 ’press to check’. It’s Screw fix 1863F-0001 & a spare pair of filters. Each set of filters lasts 40hours or one month, whichever comes first. So I’ll get another pair when they’re in stock.

It’s not brilliant as I think for sanding as it hasn’t solved the goggles steaming up and I think the mask & goggles will keep vying for space in my face however for Covud-19 I think it’ll be fine. It’s maybe a littke bulkier than the eclipse that has been popular but the filters go sideways rather than up your face, so I think it’ll seem less bulky as it won’t be as bulky near my eyes 🤷🏻‍♀️AND I LIVE THE *push check’. Being able to test the seal is a real comfort to me. Because if the ventilation mechanism I couldn’t tell if I was getting a good enough for on the others or not.

I do have some disposables too, but I think they’re all going to be too big for my face.

Anyway I’ve didn’t far too much time looking at masks & weighing up the options. So if you have any questions, please ask.

Oh - the guy in screw fit was really nice, but utterly clueless about the grades of masks or the fact that you have to be exceedingly careful with the disposable masks or you risk doing more harm than good etc.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 27/02/2020 02:13

The only thing that’s concerning about that 4chan post is the fact it specifies about Italy... and that’s exactly what’s happening now. I usually disregard things from that source to be honest but that’s made me feel a bit wobbly.

I’m heading to Aldi tomorrow to get a few more bags of nappies and baby wipes, plus risotto rice and some cheeses hopefully for freezing although my freezer is getting quite full now.

I’m also going to complete a final stash online shop at Sainsbury’s tonight/tomorrow but I’m now going a bit brain blank as to what I should actually get. Tinned veg probably. I keep eating the treats as well so might get more of those and attempt to hide them from myself Grin

Ocado have some fab tins of things like spinach and chickpea curry that are actually nice, they’re not cheap but I’ve got a few of these as quick meals with the microwave rice if we are pushed or one of us is ill and the other is having to manage everything including baby DS.

I’ve got a batch of Oatly milk and cream coming, and already have about six litres of UHT, plus some long life lacto free milk. I keep stocking up on that every time I go to Lidl as it lasts for ages.
I also have about 38 litres of bottled water but am going to get more in this final online shop as it’s so handy to have in and while we have the space I may as well.

We have one pack of ten masks. Not enough and I was going to get a PP3 elipse one but can’t find replacement filters anywhere. I wouldn’t be able to get a mask for DS as he’s so tiny and wouldn’t keep one on anyway, but I’m still tempted to get one for me or DH Incase we have to venture out for more supplies in a lockdown situation. I need to hurry up and make my mind up before the decision is made for me due to lack of supply.
We have swimming goggles we could use at a push and I have a pack of surgical gloves from dying my hair although there aren’t loads left.

I recommend menthol crystals for congestion - they are available on amazon and can be put in a bowl of steaming water or sprinkled on the floor of your shower. I have a couple of tubs and they’re brilliant if you just get a bit of a cold.

Neome · 27/02/2020 02:31

Heres a link to the emontional preparation thread thank you so much for the kind comments. Not everyone's cup of tea of course Grin.

I know I'm not the only one on this thread who has direct experience of disability and various personal care issues as a carer and parent carer. The discussion about managing D&V, only one toilet etc reminded me of the usefulness of various bits of disability/healthcare equipment (along with camping equipment).

These are things I've found a use for at one time or other:

After a cesarean when wc a flight of stairs away from bedroom a camping toilet in my bedroom was brilliant.

Caring for various people a commode made life easier sometimes. Putting a couple of sheets of toilet roll in the bottom of a commode or bedpan makes them easier to clean. There's an advantage for the patient in not having to use precious energy getting to the bathroom.

After an operation a male adult in the family used a urinal thing at night —very useful and could reduce pressure on single wc household - can be combined with shewee if you have one.

Probably enough about toileting! Making up beds with several layers of sheets interleaved with washable bed pads if relevant has also saved me time and energy on many occasions.

Apologies if all this seems daft or obvious or indeed TMI. Good for me having a think though.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 27/02/2020 02:35

Just seen this screenshot on the coronovirus uk subReddit, people are saying it was sent to parents via the school app and they were told not to share, it's been posted to face book and comments in there have parents saying they received the same message.

It was posted two hours ago on Reddit. I guess it'll be on the news in morning if it's legit.

Does anyone know if you can have more than one basket running at a time in Sainsbury’s online?
I’ve made an order for my parents and checked out and it’s letting me add another slot to another address but when I add items they seem
To be going in the basket of the existing order. Not sure if it’s a glitch on the app or I have to wait for that delivery to be made before I make another?

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 27/02/2020 03:00

I know you can have two baskets with Tesco but they need to be two different time slots and you need to "check out" the first lot before starting a second if that makes sense.

Did you complete and checkout the first order? If not that could be why things are going to the existing order

Dennisreynoldsduster · 27/02/2020 03:20

I think it thinks I’m still amending the order - going to try on laptop as I think the app is having a meltdown!

walnut87 · 27/02/2020 03:42

Hi, I’ve been lurking on this board for a while now.. thank you so much for all the amazing advice.

I have a newborn baby and am immunosuppressed myself.. am seriously at risk if I catch pneumonia so getting more anxious now this is circulating more. I need to phone my GP surgery to check I am correct, but have been putting it off to try and mitigate some of my anxiety (postnatal & general gah) My mum also has diabetes which I understand puts her at greater risk. She comes here a lot to help with DD.

Money is a bit tight on maternity leave but will stretch to essentials. I have a lot of food in the house so not an issue (Brexit plus baby prep) and have stocked up on hospital grade disinfectant & hand wipes etc (clinell) since my time in hospital. Have the Dettol spray likewise but will get some more. Also have tonnes of Milton sterilising fluid.

How do I keep myself and my newborn safe? My partner has to continue to work so has to go out and about. Not sure about best approach?

I have seen some p3 masks on screwfix altho expensive (18 pounds each) & they look terrifying so don’t really want more than necessary (Altho one def wouldn’t hurt as we have a lot of DIY to do soon involving plaster and horrid old insulation)

Thinking maybe just getting one for my partner and I to use as and when needed? Is that realistic? I wouldn’t want to leave house with baby if it got bad, as can’t protect her, even if I can protect me? Maybe I shouldn’t leave now? Is that overreacting? So scared of my partner bringing it home, I spoke to him last night and think he actually appreciates my concern, especially as there’s a case about ten miles from here apparently.

Should I stock up on anything for baby? New to this.. Guessing maybe nappies but not sure size wise gah.

Also does anyone know if napisan would be effective in wash? Also could I make a disinfectant spray to use on door handles etc using Milton? Would it only last 24 hrs though?

Thanks x

Dennisreynoldsduster · 27/02/2020 03:55

I’ve got a ten week old and I’ve stocked up on nappies of each size so I’ve got several packs of each based on how quickly he has been going through them.
He’s formula fed now so I’ve also bulk bought the formula (largely because he only gets on with a very specific one and I live in fear of not being able to get it)
Although your little one might be too small for most medicines now I would also get a couple of bottles of infant calpol two months plus, infant cough mixture, snuffle baby products and sterimar nasal spray Incase they get a cold etc then you’re all stocked up for what you might need. Have you got a thermometer? Make sure you’ve also got a couple of tubes of nappy cream or any other creams etc you use daily.

I have a microwave steriliser but have also got some sterilising tablets and intend to pick up some more and some fluid so I’ve got all bases covered.

I was really paranoid initially and didn’t want to leave the house but I’ve realised there’s no real way of protecting yourself and DS needs fresh air so while we don’t have lots of known cases I’m still taking him out and about it I’m just being very careful with hygiene and letting people hold him etc.

My DH travels to and from London too. He washes his hands and face as soon as he gets in, and usually changes into loungewear as chucks his clothes immediately in the wash (always done this, not new). I’m also being really strict about shoes in the house as we got a bit lazy since we have wooden floors. I’m cleaning everything with disinfectant fluid and washing all cushion covers etc regularly or using the dettol spray (when DS isn’t in the vicinity)

The way I’m looking at it is realistically, we might get it, but I’m doing everything within my power to prevent it. After that there’s nothing I can do and if it’s as infectious as it appears to be there is a limit on what can be done.

preponderings · 27/02/2020 06:11

Managed to get DH to drive us home via the shops. He wouldn't let me stock up on extra milk, tins or frozen foodsetc. Although he was a bit shocked that the spaghetti shelf was empty. Conceded to get two extra packs of flour in case we need to make bread (not sure he knows what else you need to make bread as that's all he mentioned)! He got a huge pack of beer and some toilet roll. Small steps, small steps.

Still debating putting the Dc in sports club in the Easter holidays (not necessary, but they want to go). Need to decide soon.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 27/02/2020 06:23

FYI: Students in a local school have been asked to bring in masks so the school can have a stockpile for students and teachers "in case".
The virus is not even in our state yet but local pharmacies are sold out and no orders being filled.

pemberlyshades · 27/02/2020 06:56

Found you again! Let's see what happens in the next episode of "The World"
Seriously though- 2nd week back after half term I expect to see a shift in UK cases.

CrapTVAddict · 27/02/2020 07:00

Not sure if to update on here as lost track what the agreed vote was but my family live in caserta italy (southern Italy) and there is a suspected case and schools are shut in caserta .
So it seems it's spread from someone who was in Milan and a few children are being tested as well.
