Hi all, i found out im pregnant and this is my first and im absolutely clueless on what to do next. I called gp and they told me to bring my pee for testing but i have had 2 positives on digital and 1 positive on the lines one. Tracking from an app i should be about 5 weeks now.

TannerJames11 · 03/12/2024 23:47

Hi all, got a positive today, first one in nearly 5 years of trying it doesn’t feel real ! Luckily on folic acid already and gonna ring the drs tomorrow to get booked in, I didn’t wanna tell them before my husband. Had cramps yesterday and assumed it was my period due, had some today as well but trying not to worry, hopefully they’re getting settled in !

Hey @Chie1999 are you in the UK? It's not common for GPs to reconfirm a pregnancy. In my area I don't even notify my GP as it's self referral to the hospital.

They can advise what the process is in your local area and assuming you're in the UK it varies a bit but typically the first thing is to register with the hospital you would want to give birth at (you can change your mind later) and they will arrange a midwife booking appointment somewhere around 8-10 weeks.

Congratulations to all of the newcomers! Also sending hugs to those who are going through a worrying time, I really hope everything turns out ok.

I’m 5 weeks 3 days now and wow the nausea hasn’t half kicked in! Worst timing but I’ve got an awful cough and retch every time I have a coughing fit which I feel is a dead giveaway.

I know we started to have this discussion a while back but how is everyone planning on approaching secretly not drinking at their work Christmas dos? We are doing a bottomless brunch with table service so a bit of a tricky one!

Attheyard · 04/12/2024 07:05

Thank you so much everyone! It’s a crazy and surreal feeling. I woke up this morning and thought wow, but also I don’t really “feel” pregnant and not experiencing many symptoms. So it’s a bit worrying. Do people typically take multiple tests? I had a really strong cross on a clear blue one but not sure if I should be testing all the time or not.

Re Christmas parties, I’m going to try and go for 0% G&Ts or seedlip because it is nigh on impossible to tell, but haven’t figured out how to avoid the rounds at the bar yet. There’s only so many times you can be on antibiotics! I might drive to a couple and make up some early appointment or something but even that is suspicious. I’ve decided on Christmas Day I’m going to have a glass of champagne and then accept a full glass of red wine and just not drink that so it doesn’t need to get topped up, and hope my in-laws don’t notice. I know it’s first trimester but think a small champagne is ok according to friends who have read that Expecting Better book (which I’m definitely going to buy!)

Is anyone changing their exercise routine? I love to run with my dog on a a waist harness so want to keep that going for a long as possible, but suspect it won’t last that long as I won’t fit into it! I also horse ride and ski…all my favourite things that I won’t be able to do this winter. I really don’t like yoga or Pilates so wondering if I should try some YouTube ballet or something? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Maybe swimming?

Thanks for the advice on the vitamins, now I just need to remember to take them!

sabretoothtigger · 04/12/2024 07:49

@Emelene keeping everything crossed for good news for you this morning.

DragonflyRuby · 04/12/2024 08:51

Welcome everyone, seems to be a lot of new bfps - August might be a busy month!!
I’m 5 + 5 today and no major symptoms other than sore boobs and a bit of cramping which I’ve had since 3 + 5, like pp said, I’m just trying to see it as the little dot burrowing in.

@Emelene Thinking of you today. I hope your scan brings good news. ❤️

@Attheyard I’m still planning to keep up my gym routine. I normally strength training 3/4 times a week but I’ve been so nervous the last couple of weeks I haven’t been and I don’t feel great for it! But I’m going to go back this weekend. Swimming is a great idea too, I might try and do a few lengths!

Chie1999 · 04/12/2024 09:02

Hey @Harriet1989 I'm in the Uk and based in Scotland. I actually didn't know you can self refer yourself to the hospital. Do i just simply walk in to my preferred hospital and say i want to register. I think im at 5 w 3d but not sure if i need to wait to around 8 weeks to register.
I found it weird as well, when gp told me to collect a cup for a pee test, but i didn't know the right process.

DragonflyRuby · 04/12/2024 09:16

@Chie1999 If you Google your local hospital and midwife referral it will probably bring up some info that will tell you what the process is. Mine you just fill out an online form others you have to phone. Some will say you need to wait until you’re 6 weeks but not all places say that. ❤️

@Attheyard I also run with my dog on a harness! & I really don't want to stop. From what I've heard it's about the fall risk so I'm just going to stick to really easy trails for now and take it gently... but my dog would go insane without the runs haha

OneGladTiger · 04/12/2024 09:46

@Attheyard I’ve just started swimming regularly as a way to keep fit during this pregnancy. Although I did get a bit worried about whether chlorine was bad or not 🤦‍♀️ I have an active dog too who I walk twice a day and I’m hoping I can stay active right into the third trimester! I’d go crazy without my walks and spending time in nature. I have an allotment too so I’m hoping I’ll be able to enjoy the growing season with bump!

Coco1oco · 04/12/2024 09:52

Hi everyone,

Only found this thread this morning, got a positive at the weekend at due on 6th August!

This week be my first, so hoping some of your experienced parents can guide me! Very excited and also nervous, have an early scan booked in for 23rd December and can't wait!

LolaJ87 · 04/12/2024 10:36

My only exercise is walking my elderly dog and chasing my toddler, some of you are so inspiring!

Welcome to our new posters ❤

@Coco1oco a few of us have scans on 22 or 23 December - we will be keeping the scan clinics busy 😅

My symptoms had eased a bit earlier this week but they're back with a wallop today. Baby brain has also kicked in... left my laptop bag at home this morning!

I was convinced I wasn’t gonna book an early scan, just booked one for Xmas eve, it’s killing me not telling people, luckily I don’t drink so it shouldn’t be too obvious over Xmas. Mourning the two camemberts we bought and haven’t eaten yet though, dh will be putting on as much weight as me haha ! Random question (I have so many), what are people doing about hairdressers? I’m due to see mine for mine dying on Friday and don’t know what to do !

@DragonflyRuby thanks so much for letting me know i will definitely follow the advice given here and will update, once i have something.

Congradulations to all the ladies here, and im the same, i still don't feel like its real too

LolaJ87 · 04/12/2024 10:52

@TannerJames11 bake your camembert! You can eat it if it's been cooked (and dipping stuff in it is fab!)

Getting your hair done as normal is fine as well. Lying back at the basin might be a challenge if you've got nausea though!

OP posts:
sabretoothtigger · 04/12/2024 11:07

Yes, yes, yes, bake the camembert! And get little waxy potatoes or crusty bread to dip.

I don't drink either, so that's not a problem for me. But I'm not even telling my partner, so already trying to work out excuses for not eating all the cheese, paté, and smoked salmon etc he'll bring home for me. Eeek!

Workingmammabear · 04/12/2024 11:17

@Attheyard Ive actually increased my exercise as it's helping with morning sickness. Iv started spinning byfollowing a pregnancy spin class on YouTube and I'm keeping up my weekly strength sessions. Spoke to Dr and she's happy but said I must take care not to overheat.

Took my first cyclizine about an hour ago and actually fancied 2 piece of toast just now.... I haven't eaten much for days, so that's a win!!

I'm going for an ice skating and fondue night with a friend in a couple of weeks.... I researched and apparently both should be fine, I'd be absolutely gutted to have to miss out!

Can you fake early gout symptoms and have to avoid rich foods? 😂It must be so hard to keep quiet but of course it's understandable ❤ When do you think you'll tell your partner?

@LolaJ87 when he notices the bump, if I get that far 😂

Hello folks, been away from here for a bit as had a little mini break to Lisbon for my birthday (planned by my partner before we knew I was pregnant, so was a bit of an odd one, we did a walking food and wine tour one day with copious alcohol consumed by everyone but me. Probably all wondering why a non drinker would book on to such a thing 😅) Warm welcome to all the new folks in the last week! I only called the maternity services today as thought no harm waiting until after our trip as I’m now 6 weeks. Now thinking that was stupid and I should have called as soon as I had a positive test ☹️ as the appointment they offered me is January 15th. By then I’ll be 12wks1 day.. that seems so far away to me and feeling a bit anxious about not even speaking to a midwife before then.. She said it was the earliest they could offer and that the midwife would see you for the first time up until week 12 .. has anyone else had a booking appointment this late ?

LolaJ87 · 04/12/2024 11:53

@TheCoralFish maybe not much comfort to you as it's a different system, but that's standard in Ireland. We have our booking appointments between 12 and 13 weeks, alongside our first scan. It does feel like a long wait, private scans for the win in the meantime! Hope you had a wonderful trip, Lisbon sounds amazing.
