Will my brunette hair and brown eyes be dominant?

I have quite dark brunette hair and brown eyes and dh has blue eyes and although blonde as a child has very dark blonde to light brown hair.
Am I right to think the baby is most likely to have my colouring or is it 50/50?
My parents have brown hair and eyes.
His parents one of each.

High school science lessons would say yes but I think it's more complicated. Me and DP both have hazel eyes but DD (now 4) has blue. Only one grandparent has blue/green. I was really surprised. DS1 also seems to have blue but might change.

DeeBeeCee · 20/04/2024 09:40

I don’t think it’s possible to predict with certainty. It depends on ethnicity and ancestors further back.

I have brown hair and grey eyes and DH has brown hair and brown eyes. Our DC both have blue eyes, one is dark haired the other blond. They had 2 grandparents with black hair, 1 blond and 1 light brown. British/Irish/Dutch ancestors.

vanillaclouds · 20/04/2024 09:42

Most likely as darker features do tend to dominate but not necessarily.
If you had 5 children they'd likely all look different and have varying traits from both parents.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/04/2024 09:42

I have green eyes. Both my dc have inherited brown eyes.

They both want my green eyes!

TheGriffle · 20/04/2024 09:43

Dh has brown hair and brown eyes, I have brown hair and blue eyes.

DD1 is ginger with blue eyes (quite rare apparently!)
Dd2 is brown haired with brown/green/hazel eyes.

So dh’s genes didn’t totally dominate, dd1’s colouring comes from my side of the family.

tighterthancramp · 20/04/2024 09:43

Mine weren't. I'm dark hair and eyes. Baby has light brown (blonde in some light) hair and piercing blue eyes 🙃

Ohhmydays · 20/04/2024 09:45

I would say 50/50. When i was on holiday in tunisia years ago we met a couple staying at our hotel dad was tunisian, mum was English with blonde hair and blue eyes. Their little girl had dads skin tone and curly hair but her hair was blonde with piercing blue eyes

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/04/2024 09:45

Could be anything. Me and DH are the same combo as you and we have 2 girls - one with brown hair and grey/blue eyes and one with white blonde hair and light brown eyes! They don't even look like sisters.

RandomMess · 20/04/2024 09:45

One of my 4 DC has blue eyes.

Both Grandads have blue eyes the rest of us and our families have brown apart from me that has hazel.

Cantysaurus18 · 20/04/2024 09:46

The same situation as you for me and DH apart from our parents: brown hair brown eyes, brown hair blue eyes. DH's parents: both blue eyes but one brown hair, one blonde. My DS has blonde hair but has 1 brown eye and one hazel eye, my DD has brown eyes, brown hair. It really is not that straightforward!

headstone · 20/04/2024 09:47

I have blue eyes and light brown hair my husband has black hair and dark brown eyes , our children are all different apart from eye colour. 1 . Dark brown hair and dark brown eyes 2. Black hair dark brown eyes. 3 medium brown hair and dark brown eyes and 4. Blond hair and light brown eyes.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/04/2024 09:48

It's not that simple. I think it depends on grandparents too, maybe even their parents.

DH has black hair and brown eyes (as he mum, but his dad was brown hair/blue eyes)
I have blonde hair and blue eyes

DS has my colouring
DD has light brown hair and green eyes, colouring only seen in my half brother on either side of the family.

There are many examples of brown eyes/hair not dominating. If this was the case, surely everybody would be this colouring by now?

Youdontevengohere · 20/04/2024 09:48

I have dark brown hair and eyes. DH is fair with blue eyes. All our children are blonde with blue eyes, which really surprised me.

Allthegoodnamesaregone1 · 20/04/2024 09:49

Me very dark brown eyes and dark brown Hair - very pale white skin.

DH- Very ginger as a child more browny as an adult and bright blue eyes.

2 DC with the brightest blue eyes ever and lighter brown hair

1 with darker brown hair and brown eyes.

I really thought I'd stand more of a chance

Elephantswillnever · 20/04/2024 09:52

Genetics is a complicated thing . Exdh and I have dark brunette hair, he has brown eyes, I have hazel. Between us we have a brunette with hazel eyes as you might expect. A redhead with brown eyes and a pair of blonde, blue eyed twins. They all look alike but colouring is different even skin tone and how they react to sun.

Dorriethelittlewitch · 20/04/2024 09:52

I had 4 brown eyed grandparents (1 red head/2 dark brown hair, 1 black).

1 blue eyed parent and 1 grey eyed parent (one red haired, one dark brown)

I have grey eyes and very dark brown hair.

Dc1 has blue eyes and caramel hair (gets very blond in the summer)
Dc2 has grey eyes and very dark brown hair

Dc1 has my olive skin tone. Dc2 has her Dad's very pale skin.

LER2023 · 20/04/2024 10:21

Weirdly not always the case.
My mum and dad for example; my mum has auburn hair with green eyes, my dad is dark brown hair with brown eyes.

My eldest brother has dark brown hair and brown eyes,
My other brother has like near enough jet black hair (although hes brunette its just so dark it could pass off as black hair) with green eyes.
Me? Oh im sure im adopted🤣🤣
I have mousy brown hair with hints of auburn in and bright blue eyes.

But my niece to my other brother is auburn with blue/green eyes!

My eldest is having a boy in June so we have to wait until hes maybe a year old to find out what hes going to have😊 (only because we dont know whether he will come out bald or have loads of hair at birth like my niece did, she had a full mop of hair when she was born and barely lost any of it as a baby!

So possibility but not always😅

Edit: i want to add im the palest of pale.
My eldest brother has pale skin but can tan really well (my dad bad olive skin and my mum has of course ginger skin but can tan) my other brother who is 32 now doesnt even really leave the house other than working but im sure he burns and goes brown in the sun.
And i can sit under a bulb and burn and never go brown.

You see? I think im actually adopted at this point, my mum always tells me she birthed me but with stuff like this i never believe that, i always say my real mum is on a cruise somewhere waiting for me😂

Rainyspringflowers · 20/04/2024 10:23

I have dark brown eyes which none of my children inherited!

turkeyboots · 20/04/2024 10:24

Depends what lurks in the combined gene pool. My parents are blue eyed dark haired, as were all the grandparents. There are 3 blondes and 6 redheads across the grandchildren.

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 20/04/2024 10:28

I have blue eyes and brown hair. ExP has black hair and light brown eyes. I expected our DD to be darker than me, but nope, her colouring is exactly the same as mine.

Chemistrychic · 20/04/2024 10:29

No. I am dark hair dark eyes and my DH is blonde with blue eyes. Our first looked like him, our second like me.

Xur · 20/04/2024 10:30

It’s a combination of chance and genes. I’m a good example, me dad has gray eyes black hair, my moms has blue eyes dark brown hair,I have an older brother and an older sister. My older brother has black hair and blue eyes and my sister has brown hair with gray eyes.
I have brown hair and partial heterochromia with bright green and hazel eyes. No one in my family has this. Visual features are often inherited from the maternal grandmother. Look at your mum, it’s statistically likely to have some features inherited from her.

Dibblydoodahdah · 20/04/2024 10:31

My DH’s family all have brown eyes. When I had DS1, my MIL insisted that his eyes would eventually turn brown. Guess what, he’s 13 and they’re still green and DS2 has blue eyes!

ItsYourMoneyRalf · 20/04/2024 10:33

Basic genetics. If you have 1 blue eye gene and 1 brown eye gene you will have brown eyes. If you pass on your blue eye gene and your husband also passes on a blue eye gene, then blue eyes.

bradpittsbathwater · 20/04/2024 10:34

Depends on your parents/grandparents etc. I'm fair and blue eyed and so is my son. My DH has brown hair and brown eyes. But his parents both have blue eyes. My mum does. None as fair haired and skinned as me and DS though
