Will my brunette hair and brown eyes be dominant?

I have quite dark brunette hair and brown eyes and dh has blue eyes and although blonde as a child has very dark blonde to light brown hair.
Am I right to think the baby is most likely to have my colouring or is it 50/50?
My parents have brown hair and eyes.
His parents one of each.

Not necessarily, or everyone would have brown hair after a couple of generations.

i have ginger hair and blue eyes, DH has brown hair and brown eyes. DS has blue eyes and strawberry blond hair.

greengreyblue · 20/04/2024 17:52

My Italian friend with dark brown eyes and hair had two children with her fair haired and eyed DH , both are blond and blue eyed.

Alwaystired2023 · 20/04/2024 17:53

I thought so based on what they taught us at school but it was very much not dominant for us x

Pinkywoo · 20/04/2024 18:29

My DH is from Sicily and has black hair, brown eyes and olive skin. I'm pale, blonde with blue eyes. We expected our kids to have brown hair and eyes, but one has pale skin, light brown hair and green eyes, and the other has olive skin, golden blond hair and blue eyes!

TheBirdintheCave · 20/04/2024 19:15

My husband and I have brown hair (his darker than mine) and blue eyes. Husband's beard is ginger and we're both freckled so we imagined we'd either have a child with brown or red hair.

Son is blonde 🤷🏻‍♀️

Genetics are fascinating. Can't wait to see what number two looks like!

SnookyPook · 20/04/2024 19:18

Have a Google of dominant and recessive alleles. It's true certain features are more likely to be dominant but you may still carry recessive ones too which, if combined with hubby's genes may produce all kinds of combos. Certain ones will be more likely to be passed on but there is always a chance of a surprise.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/04/2024 19:21

DH has brown eyes, I have blue. We have one child with brown eyes and one with blue.

Curlymam88 · 20/04/2024 19:47

Both my partner and I have brown hair and brown eyes and DD has bright blue eyes!

Notreat · 20/04/2024 19:51

I have dark hair and eyes my children are blonde with blue eyes. I have a brother with brown hair and eyes and one with blue eyes blonde hair. My husband is blonde and blue eyed his siblings have brown eyes.
I think you just have to wait and see genetics are very complicated

It’s hard to say. My niece’s mum has brown hair and brown eyes, nieces dad has brown hair and blue eyes. She has brown hair and blue eyes. So the blue won over the brown in this case (she’s an adult now). She looks like a double of her mum, apart from the blue eyes.

Me and Dh both have brown hair (well dh is mousey brown and mine is medium brown) and both have blue eyes. However as a child dh had bright blonde hair until around 10-12 yrs old think he said. I had mousey blonde as a child until 12 then medium brown. DS is only 1 yrs old but he has bright blonde hair and blue eyes. If I had not seen photos of dh as a child I would be quite surprised. So ds is likely going to go brown hair as a teenager at a guess.

Who knows! My dad is dark hair, dark eyes with Lebanese heritage. Mum fair with light eyes. Both my brother and eye got her light eyes and I have blonde hair. My DH has dark hair and eyes. DD has blonde hair and lovely hazel brown eyes. I always wonder what baby 2 might look like in the future. DDs colour combo is gorgeous 🥰

Notthatcatagain · 20/04/2024 22:09

You can just never tell. My daughter is an exact copy of me, I am an exact copy of my mum, my niece is like us as is her daughter. My granddaughter is almost completely opposite. My son and his wife both have very curly hair, their children have poker straight hair.

  • I not "eye" 😂

I find genetics fascinating!

My kids get progressively fairer - Me brunette with light brown eyes, DH mousey brown with blue eyes.
DD1 has almost black hair and eyes (like my Dad). DD2 has multicoloured hair and hazel/muddy green eyes (hair from my mum, eyes similar to DH's mum). DS is brunette with blue eyes and was white blonde as a toddler (like my brother - who is now the same colouring as DD1).

It could be any mixture to be honest with the added surprise of a throwback somewhere too.

My DP has brown hair & eyes I have blue eyes & blond hair our DS has blond hair & blue eyes

User79853257976 · 21/04/2024 00:17

We have the same dynamics as you and first was like dad, second like me.

Feebs450 · 21/04/2024 00:24

Dh - light brown hair, green eyes
Me - dark brown hair, green eyes

Dc1 - light brown hair, brown eyes
Dc2 - light brown hair, blue eyes
Dc3 - White blond hair, green eyes

Dc3 sticks out like a sore thumb in family photos, his hair glows compared to the rest of us!

I also find it absolutely fascinating that we have 3 dc with 3 different eye colours. There really is no way to tell.

Namerchangee · 21/04/2024 00:49

I have brown hair and eyes. All of my DC are blonde haired and blue eyed 🤷🏻‍♀️

SErunner · 21/04/2024 06:08

Eye and hair genetics is far more complex than GCSE science makes out. We have a brown haired grey eyed daughter, neither of which either of us have!

wellnobut · 21/04/2024 07:28

My mum has olive skin, black hair and dark eyes, my dad pale skin freckles, mousy blond, light blue eyes

1st child: dark hair, eyes and skin
2nd child: white blonde (changed to dark blonde in teens) blue eyes, tanning skin
3rd child: dark blonde, non-tanning skin, blue eyes.
4th child; dark hair, dark eyes, tanning skin.

So in my family case:
50% chance of dark features
25% chance mixture of features
25% light features

Although since you only asked about hair and eyes it's 50/50 In my family's case :)

Mardyybum · 21/04/2024 07:35

Me - brown hair light brown/hazel eyes
DH - dark blonde hair and blue/grey eyes
DS - dark blonde hair and dark brown eyes
DD - brown hair and blue/grey eyes

Nottodaty · 21/04/2024 07:37

I have fair hair and blue eyes (as a child had white hair that slowly darkened to a dirty blonde) my husband black hair with brown eyes!

Both are daughters have mid/dark brown and green eyes.

you are misunderstanding the word dominant. Your genes are not dominant over your partners genes, no. The word dominant applies to which allele of two that the child has for each characteristic. So you could pass on a blue eye allele to your child, which you might be carrying, just as easily as a brown eye allele

Blond hair in childhood is normal in temperate climates to help with bone growth strength. It is not related to alleles for adult hair colour

Blacknailer · 21/04/2024 07:45

I'm brunette with brown eyes and so are my parents. Husband blond and blue eyes.

Both kids very blond and blue eyes too, look nothing like me!

Genetics more complex than you learn in GCSE biology...

Whatnow321 · 21/04/2024 07:57

I’m brown hair and brown eyes and DH is blue eyed with light brown hair (also blonde as a child).

We have 2 DS. DS1 is exactly like me brown hair and eyes. DS2 is blonde with blue eyes. They look completely different.
