Will my brunette hair and brown eyes be dominant?

I have quite dark brunette hair and brown eyes and dh has blue eyes and although blonde as a child has very dark blonde to light brown hair.
Am I right to think the baby is most likely to have my colouring or is it 50/50?
My parents have brown hair and eyes.
His parents one of each.

Also don't forget a lot of children's hair darkens over their first few years so even a blonde baby can end up very dark haired by their adult years. There's just no telling tbh. Most babies are also born with blue/grey eyes as it's the sunlight that causes the eye to change to its true colour so the first few weeks you can't tell their eye colour either. Major and eye colour is quite a complex genetic mix. You for example could have a recessive red hair gene that is masked by dominant brunette gene and your partner could also have this. If your child receives the two red hair genes from the both of you they'd have red hair but neither of you do. You can never tell tbh.
I've got two daughters, one has green eyes like me the other has grey like her dad. They both have my brunette hair though.

No, my children's father has dark skin, brown eyes and black hair and all my children are blonde hair, blue eyes.

PixieTrance89 · 20/04/2024 12:27

BoohooWoohoo · 20/04/2024 12:27

Could be anything.

Me and ex have dark brown hair and eyes. We both have a blonde (blue eyes) and brunette (brown eyes) parent.
All of our kids were born blonde.
One has blue eyes, one has green and one has brown.

MrsSlocombesCat · 20/04/2024 12:29

I had three children with a brown hair eyed man all blue eyes. I have green brown eyes brown hair. Had my last baby with a blue eyed blondish man and he has dark brown hair and eyes. Of the three with blue eyes two are redheads and one is brown (he was very blonde as a child). Genetics are so unpredictable.

Stayeduptoolateagain · 20/04/2024 12:32

I have green with brown flecks, husband has grey eyes. Both grandmothers have blue eyes. My daughter's are turquoise blue, my twins' are darkest brown.

TeaPleaseX · 20/04/2024 12:32

Me and my partner are both dark haired and brown eyed. Our first DD is blonde haired with green eyes Confused

Starbugg · 20/04/2024 12:34

Your set up sounds like me and my husband, and our families. I also have a darker skin tone as have a foreign background.

One DC is splitting image of me with my skin tone.

Other DC is the splitting image of DH with his skin tone.

There are several genes involved in hair colour and eye colour so it's possible e.g. two brown haired brown eyed parents could have a blond haired, blue eyed child.

With you and your DH it'll depend on your family tree. Your DH will definitely be handing on his blond haired, blue eyed genes. What hair colour and eye colour did your grandparents have? Any blue eyes and blond hair there? What about further back? In which case one or both of your parents could have the recessive genes and passed on to you and so you could have a child with blue eyes and blond hair. Or you could have a brand new mutation in an egg cell that results in your child having blue eyes or blond hair.

My MIL is from a country where everyone has dark colouring but married a Brit with blond hair and blue eyes. Their children all had dark colouring but DH married me (blond hair, blue eyes) and our first child has blond hair and blue eyes.

Thepossibility · 20/04/2024 12:36

I have dark hair and eyes. 3 DC all light hair blue eyes like DH.

Shrubb157 · 20/04/2024 12:38

Not necessarily, I have blonde hair and blue eyes and my partner has brown hair and brown eyes. Both our children are blonde, one with blue eyes and one with hazel

pelotonaddiction · 20/04/2024 12:39

My mum - dark skin, dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, very olive toned
My dad - pale skin, red hair, blue eyes

Me - red hair with green eyes Confused nobody seems to know where they came from

JaninaDuszejko · 20/04/2024 12:40

DD1 is ginger with blue eyes (quite rare apparently!)

Maybe on a worldwide scale, it's said a lot on American websites but that's assuming an even distribution of characteristics throughout the world. But having grown up in Scotland I would say most people who have red hair also have blue eyes.

GinBlossom94 · 20/04/2024 12:41

I have green/hazel eyes, mousey brown hair, DH has dark brown hair and brown eyes. DC1 has dark brown hair and green/hazel eyes, DC2 has medium brown hair (progressively getting darker, aged 19) and brown eyes, DC3 is currently a sandy blonde with brown eyes (age 15, so will probably get darker)

BugBugTheTornado · 20/04/2024 12:43

I have dark, straight hair and dark eyes, olive skin. Husband has dark, straight hair, dark eyes, olive skin

Both of our families are the same, except my paternal great grandmother who had red hair. Both of my husband's daughters (not mine) inherited his colourings and are his absolute doubles.

Our daughter has blonde curly hair and the brightest blue eyes. She's now two, so unlikely to change I think. It's bizarre!

WhereIsMyLight · 20/04/2024 12:46

The dark hair and eyes gene is dominant but not guaranteed, it depends on which genes you and your partner picked up from your parents.

DH and I have brown hair, mine is darker. My eyes are brown and his are grey. DC is very blonde and with blue eyes (the same colour as my mum’s).

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 20/04/2024 12:47

DH has brown hair, hazel eyes. I have dark brown hair, brown eyes. DD is blonde with green eyes. If there are 2 grandparents with lighter eyes it's possible - DH's mum blue eyes brown hair and my mum grey eyes brown hair).

ItsYourMoneyRalf · 20/04/2024 10:33

Basic genetics. If you have 1 blue eye gene and 1 brown eye gene you will have brown eyes. If you pass on your blue eye gene and your husband also passes on a blue eye gene, then blue eyes.

Basic genetics: as many as 16 different genes could be involved and blue eyes can’t be considered a recessive trait. Any combination of parents could theoretically produce any eye colour (though the probabilities of some colours are clearly much higher than others).

FlyingPizzaMonkey · 20/04/2024 12:51

My DC have inherited my blue eyes over DH’s brown ones (I’m secretly pleased 😂).

Eldest is also blonde, no idea where that’s from. Genes don’t always make sense.

onawave · 20/04/2024 12:54

My partner has brown hair and brown eyes. My hair is dark blonde and I have one green and one blue eye. Both kids are blonde haired and blue eyed. My youngest hair is almost white the same as mine was as a kid.

JanuaryBirthdays · 20/04/2024 12:58

DH has dark brown (almost black) hair and brown eyes, I'm blonde and blue eyes
All 3 DC have blonde hair and blue eyes 🙂

likepebblesonabeach · 20/04/2024 12:59

I have brown hair and brown eyes, DH has dark blond hair and blue eyes, both DC dark hair and brown eyes

murasaki · 20/04/2024 13:03

Not necessarily. My best friend is tiny and as red haired as you get. Her husband is tall and brown haired and eyed. Both kids are very red haired and blue eyed, some people doubt he's their dad, which he very much is. They did get a bit of his height though, and at 11 and 13 are taller than their mum.

Soubriquet · 20/04/2024 13:03

I have mousy brown hair and green eyes.
dh has dark brown hair and blue eyes.

dd has my hair and blue eyes
