Will my brunette hair and brown eyes be dominant?

I have quite dark brunette hair and brown eyes and dh has blue eyes and although blonde as a child has very dark blonde to light brown hair.
Am I right to think the baby is most likely to have my colouring or is it 50/50?
My parents have brown hair and eyes.
His parents one of each.

Yes, brown is dominant...so if you have 1 blue gene and 1 brown gene, you will have brown eyes. If you pass on your brown gene, your child will have brown eyes. If you pass on your blue gene, your child will Ave blue eyes (because your dh presumably has 2 blue genes for him to have blue eyes.

If you have 2 brown genes, your child will have brown eyes not matter what because the brown you pass on is dominant.

If you both pass on a blue gene, your child's eyes could be any shade of bluey-grey because it will be down to how the gene is expressed on a molecular level.

This is what we learned in school but it's very much an over-simplification.

The genetics of colour are actually much more complex and are not controlled by a single gene.

It's quite likely your children will be brown eyed but that's all you can say really OP.

I personally know a blue eyed couple who have two kids with very dark brown eyes for example. They take after their paternal grandfather who has them too - but dad doesn't.

Nana99 · 20/04/2024 13:45

I'm black with one bluey/green eye and one dark brown eye 😅 both parents have brown eyes (yes, my dad is my bio dad!) so anything can happen!

Lovelynames123 · 20/04/2024 13:51

I'm brunette with brown eyes, xh blonde and blue eyed, both dds blonde with green eyes!

Katelynn88 · 20/04/2024 13:54

Not necessarily. Husband and I are both dark haired. I was dark as a kid and he was dark blonde. One of our kids has light blonde hair.

CheckeredAliceBand · 20/04/2024 13:55

Both me and ex have dark hair blue eyes. We got two little blonde babies.

EverybodyLTB · 20/04/2024 13:56

It’s never a dead cert. I have light hair/skin/eyes. My dad had jet black hair and brown eyes, my mum blue eyes and blonde. My dad’s dark hair/eye genes didn’t overcome my mum’s lighter ones.

Simd1 · 20/04/2024 13:58

I have dark brown hair and eyes, DH light brown hair (blonde as a toddler) and green eyes. DS1 has exactly the same colouring as me. DS2 was a blonde toddler, now has light brown hair and has blue eyes.

readyforroundthree · 20/04/2024 14:49

I have brown hair and brown eyes and my husband has lighter brown hair and blue eyes.
One of our children has dark hair and brown eyes and our other child has dark blonde hair and bright blue eyes.

Singleandproud · 20/04/2024 14:53

DDs dad and I are both brown haired and brown eyes, every generation is in living memory, however we both have Irish / Scottish ancestry and DD has Titian hair, extremely bright fiery, copper in bright light or magically looks brown in dull light and brown eyes.

Bandology · 20/04/2024 14:55

I'm very dark brunette with hazel eyes, DH is blue eyes, dark blond hair. Both DCs are blond and blue eyed.

WeightoftheWorld · 20/04/2024 14:56

I don't know much about the science but I have medium brown eyes and very dark brown hair, with light olive skin. DH has white skin, light brown hair and hazel eyes. His hair was bright blonde as a young child though.

Our kids are only 5 and 2 so they will continue to change I guess but we naively assumed like you that they'd look more like me with dark features. But actually they're much more of a mix of the two of us:
DC1 - my olive skin tone, but with hazel eyes similar to DH's, and the exact same colour light brown hair as DH.
DC2 - my olive skin tone, with very dark brown eyes (much darker than mine), and again the exact same light brown hair colour as DC1 and DH.

bumbumbumbum · 20/04/2024 14:58

We have it boring. Both Dh and I blue eyes and dirty blond hair. Dc are the same.

Dargawn · 20/04/2024 14:59

You are same as me and my DH but we had blonde/blue eye Dd and dark hair/eyes DS. DS is still not as dark as me though and both of them have taken after DH in other ways, but more so DD.

so you can’t tell.

CC222 · 20/04/2024 15:19

I don't think it's possible to predict.
My child's dad has a mixed Anglo Indian background, and has thick dark hair, dark skin tone, very dark brown eyes.
I have a very pale skin tone, blue eyes, fair hair. Our child is like me, pale skin, bright blue eyes but has blonde hair.
If one of your family lines has very strong genes and strong family resemblance, I'd guess your child is more likely to follow that...

Colinfromaccounts24 · 20/04/2024 15:32

Not necessarily - depends on your ancestry. I’ve got dark brown hair/ brown eyes. DH has green eyes and used to have red hair/ now more auburn. Our daughter is blond with blue eyes. My dad was blond/ blue eyed. So she takes after him. My mum is dark haired/ dark eyes and my sister is blond/ blue eyed. So they got one of each.

Littlesunshinemoon · 20/04/2024 15:45

I have dark brown hair and dark brown(almost black eyes) and my husband has dark brown hair and blue eyes.

we have one brown haired daughter with light brown eyes and one blonde daughter with blue eyes!

KathieFerrars · 20/04/2024 15:48

I have same colouring as you. Husband was blonde as a child but now lighter brown than me. He has blue eyes as has all his family. My mother has grey green eyes. Son 1 is red haired with very blue eyes. Son 2 was blonde - now going darker with grey green eyes. None of them have my colouring. My father had brown eyes and jet black hair. My sisters have brown eyes and slightly more reddish brown hair than me.

chloe5194 · 20/04/2024 15:50

I have brown eyes and very dark brown hair, DH has blonde hair and blue eyes. Both of our girls have blonde hair and bright blue eyes and look absolutely nothing like me... not that im bitter 😂

WonderingWanda · 20/04/2024 15:53

My biological father had very dark brown hair and brown eyes my dm blonde hair and green eyes. I have my dms colouring. My dh is brown hair and blue eyes my kids are very blonde with blue eyes.

Floralnomad · 20/04/2024 15:55

My husband is very dark ( or he was before the grey set in ) , I’m very blonde with blue eyes both of our children are blue eyed blondes .

WorkCleanRepeat · 20/04/2024 15:56

Statistically yes but both my children have my blue eyes despite their Dad having brown eyes.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 20/04/2024 17:46

My Dad had hazel eyes, my Mum had blue eyes. One brother and two sisters, all brown eyes. Mine are green.

Who knows, luck of the draw I reckon

Also two of us looked like Mum and the other two looked like Dad

It’s more complex than this. In the full Indian side of my family blue and green eyes from brown eyed
