Will my brunette hair and brown eyes be dominant?

I have quite dark brunette hair and brown eyes and dh has blue eyes and although blonde as a child has very dark blonde to light brown hair.
Am I right to think the baby is most likely to have my colouring or is it 50/50?
My parents have brown hair and eyes.
His parents one of each.

I am dark haired with hazel eyes and my dh has blue eyes and fair hair. One child has brown eyes and dark blonde hair and one has blue eyes and dark blonde hair.

fedupandstuck · 20/04/2024 10:38

What you know for sure is that any children will have at least one blue eye gene. In order to have blue eyes they need one from you too. You either have two brown eye genes, brown and blue, or brown and some other colour. Do you have any siblings and do any of them have anything other than brown eyes?

Cantsleepdontsleep · 20/04/2024 10:39

I’m mixed race - my kids were born with white blond hair and blue eyes. Hair has got darker as they got older but eyes have either stayed blue or gone blue green. I was often mistaken for the nanny at baby groups 😒

forgivingfiggy · 20/04/2024 10:40

I have hazel/green eyes, husband has very dark brown eyes. One of our kids has bright blue eyes.

WhamBamThankU · 20/04/2024 10:42

Out of my three kids, two are dark haired (all of us have blue eyes) and one is blonde like me despite his dads dark hair. So not really an answer for you 😂

Godesstobe · 20/04/2024 10:45

Very simply, the brown gene always dominates blue and blonde.
We all have two genes for these characteristics and pass one on randomly to our children and your OH does the same.
Although you and your parents are dark you and they may have inherited a blue/blonde gene. It won't show because you have obviously inherited a dark gene which dominates. But you may still have a recessive blue/blond gene which you might pass on to your child.
Your OH will only have blue/blonde genes (as if he had a dark one that would dominate and he would be dark) so he can only pass on blue/blonde genes.
If you have a hidden blue/ blonde gene and randomly pass that on to your child, s/he will have two blue/blonde genes and will have that colouring.
So if you have inherited a hidden recessive blue/blonde gene there is a 50/50 chance your child will have that colouring. If you have only inherited dark genes all your children will be dark because you will only be able to pass on dark genes and the dark gene will always dominate.

DD has brown eyes, SIL has hazel/green eyes. DGD has blue eyes. SIL’s mum had blue eyes, so SIL would have got a blue gene from her. On DD’s side, both my grandfather and DH’s mother had blue eyes, so there could have been a blue gene lurking in DD that was passed on to DGD.

MillshakePickle · 20/04/2024 10:50

I'm dark hair, skin and eyes. H is blonde
And blue eyed. My mum is ginger and blue eyes, dad is dark. His parents are blue eyed one ginger the other light brown hair.

Dc1 is golden/bronze hair and dark, dark brown eyes. They were brilliant blue up til a year old and was white blonde then ginger until age 3 and then changed until eyes were brown and hair a deep golden blonde verging on brown but so many highlights.

Baby currently is blonde and bright blue eyes. Colouring hasn't changed yet but eye colour isnt stable until the age of 3. So who knows?

I have dark brown eyes which none of my children inherited!

Same. I have brown eyes, DH blue. Both of us were blond as children and darkened later. DC both have blue eyes and hair that is still blond but already a good bit darker than when they were really small.

ItIsMyName · 20/04/2024 12:02

If you carry the recessive gene for eye colour 25% chance that your child will have blue eyes adding hair colour into the mx is more complicated. Check out Genetic Punnet Squares re how this is calculated. You will either be BB or Bb and your husband is bb. If you are BB, brown will be the eye colour of your child, Bb results in the 25% chance of blue.

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 20/04/2024 12:04

Yes, brown is dominant...so if you have 1 blue gene and 1 brown gene, you will have brown eyes. If you pass on your brown gene, your child will have brown eyes. If you pass on your blue gene, your child will Ave blue eyes (because your dh presumably has 2 blue genes for him to have blue eyes.

If you have 2 brown genes, your child will have brown eyes not matter what because the brown you pass on is dominant.

If you both pass on a blue gene, your child's eyes could be any shade of bluey-grey because it will be down to how the gene is expressed on a molecular level.

LetYourHairDownClaire · 20/04/2024 12:05

Exactly what @Godesstobe says and it happened to my sister. Both she and her Dh have brown hair and brown eyes, their son is blonde haired and blue eyed. Our Mum had blue eyes and brown hair, our Dad brown eye and brown hair, both my sisters are brown haired brown eyed, I am blonde haired with green eyes! My nephew looks like he is my son. In fact my own son and his cousin look like siblings, but my niece is brown haired and brown eyed. Genetics are wild.

JustSpongeBob · 20/04/2024 12:06

It confuses me as me and dp have dark brown hair/dark brown eyes and black hair/dark brown eyes (and mixed heritage) and yet our dc have blue eyes (2) and 1 has pale green eyes and they all have light brown hair ???!!!! Was not what I was expecting

Hadalifeonce · 20/04/2024 12:07

DH and I are the same as you, we have one of each.

Coconutter24 · 20/04/2024 12:09

Is there a reason for this question? Would you prefer them dark?

FluffMagnet · 20/04/2024 12:09

Both Dh and I had blonde hair when young, now mousey brown. I have Hazel eyes and DH has blue eyes. All of our parents have very dark brown hair. DC1 is auburn with grey eyes and DC2 has blonde hair and blue eyes.

I have brown hair and eyes, dh has brown hair and green eyes. Our parents are 3 x brown hair and eyes, 1 x brown hair blue eyes. Our sons are 1 x brown hair green eyes, 1 x blond hair blue eyes!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 20/04/2024 12:11

It’s likely but I thought DS would have black hair and brown eyes since DH is so dark but he has my blue eyes and mousy brown hair, unfortunately for him!

PennyPugwash · 20/04/2024 12:13

I have almost black hair and blue eyes as does my DH. My children have completely blonde hair. 2.5 years of age and still blondies ✨

coldcallerbaiter · 20/04/2024 12:14

For blue eyes, if you are a carrier of blue because a parent had blue eyes it can come out in your dc. So even 2 brown eyes parents can have blue eyes dc if they are carriers. Both parents need to be carriers or the dc will not get the blue eyes. You say your parents have brown eyes, you are prob not a carrier and so dc will get your dominant brown eyes. Rarely a grandparent with blue eyes can cause you to be a carrier.

Dh has brown hair and brown eyes, I have brown hair and blue eyes.

DD1 is ginger with blue eyes (quite rare apparently!)
Dd2 is brown haired with brown/green/hazel eyes.

So dh’s genes didn’t totally dominate, dd1’s colouring comes from my side of the family.

I'm from Wales so know a lot of people with ginger hair and all have blue eyes.

Bunnyhopskip · 20/04/2024 12:16

I don't think you can predict these things, with the exception of two blued eyed parents, predominantly having blue eyed offspring. Both my parents have very dark hair and dark brown eyes, I'm blonde with blue. My children are both blond with blue. Husband is very dark, olive skin, jet black hair, but he does have blue eyes, so we "knew" the kids would have blue eyes.

spuddy4 · 20/04/2024 12:18

My mother has dark hair and brown eyes and my father has dark hair and green eyes. Along came me with white blonde hair and blue eyes 🤣

It's definitely from my father's side of the family because two of my cousins are the same and my grandfather has blue eyes so I'm assuming that my father, aunties are uncles carry his blue eyed gene?

It's impossible to predict.

My mum has dark brown eyes and my dad has blue eyes. I have blue eyes and my brother has brown eyes.

My parents in law both have grey-green-ish eyes. My husband and one of his brothers have brown eyes and the other brother has blue eyes.

Both our children have blue eyes, from one blue eyed parent and one blue eyed grandparent.
