Hi! Just had a BFP after a MC at 8 weeks last year, and am looking for folks to breathe through the next few weeks with. I am in an age bracket where MC risk is high and I’m trying not to get ahead of myself!

@Marshmallowtoastie I felt like at my private scan but my 12 week scan I got to see the baby for quite a while. There was a tv screen she shared the pictures on and left it on while she took measurements and did a scan through from the head pointing out various bits of anatomy. We were in there for maybe 10-15 min. We had to pay £2.50 per picture, we got 4 and each picture was different.

I then had to go to a different part of the hospital for blood tests and they send the results later.

Catson · 02/12/2023 14:25

@Marshmallowtoastie you should see for a bit longer than that but a scan is really for them to check everything is ok, the fact we get to see is an added bonus. I found that apart from the obvious side profile it's not easy to make out body parts anyway. The 12 week scan is too early for finding out the sex, that's the 20 week scan you can sometimes find out. Depending what NHS trust you are in, som will not give you a sex prediction.
All trusts have different rules regarding scan pics too, in mine everyone gets one copy of one pic for free but there is no option to pay for any extra. Apparently to keep it fair for everyone (so those who can't afford it don't see other mums leaving with a whole ream of them I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

I doubt you'll sit and wait for blood results, depending on the lab you could be waiting a while so I'd imagine you'll find out later, I know mine appear on my badgernotes app once the midwife has checked and uploaded them. I guess if your trust doesn't have the app they would get in touch if anything was wrong (my midwife would be in touch with me too if there was a problem)

Marshmallowtoastie · 02/12/2023 14:47

Thanks I don’t want to find out the sex, so I’m asking in case I need to say at that point that don’t want to know, just in case they can see (I know usually they can't.) My trust does offer payment for photos but it says 1/2/3/4 copies so I was wondering if that was multiple photos that are all the same. And of course it’s a medical apt but any other procedure I’ve had with scans/cameras they let you see! And obviously this is something much more exciting to see.
thanks everyone! I’m just a bit nervous and not sure what to expect!

oop · 02/12/2023 15:00

@Marshmallowtoastie as others have said it varys trust to trust but I've had a 12 week scan in two separate trusts now and they were similar.
Unless you get a very grouchy sonographer they will usually turn the screen to you to show you the baby for a while (or show it on a separate TV if they have that setup) and then turn it back while they do their measurements.
Image wise, it's been a fiver in both trusts. I got 3 images from one place for that (all different) and I think its usually 3 in my current trust too but I had a very very clear scan and the sonographer was quite pleased with the quality of the images so she gave me 6!
Its usually 15- 25 mins or so I think depending on whether baby is behaving to take the measurements and they wont be able to see the sex yet.

Catson · 02/12/2023 19:54

@Marshmallowtoastie at your 20 week scan they will ask you if you want to know the sex and if you say no they will tell you to look away/move the screen so you can't see for certain parts if they think a body part may become visible. (I haven't had my 12 week scan for this pregnancy yet so this is all based on my first)

DevonMum2Be · 04/12/2023 07:02

Morning everyone,

Hope it’s ok to post this. I think I’m going to book to have a private scan today because of the brown discharge over the weekend. It happened twice, both after bowel movements (sorry, TMI), so I’m hoping that best case scenario is that some old blood just got dislodged due to me being slightly constipated.

The EPU are meant to be phoning me today to move my 12-week scan forward (I was booked for next Thursday), but I think I just want to know now, the waiting is so anxiety-inducing. I’m veering between thinking everything must be fine and thinking the worst.

Just sorting logistics with work and DH and then will hopefully book.

cosymama2020 · 04/12/2023 07:19

@DevonMum2Be hope you can get a scan soon and everything is okay. I believe brown blood means old which hopefully means baby is okay.

@Marshmallowtoastie my 20 week scan lasted around 30 mins last time and that didn’t include the first attempt where baby fell asleep midway 😅 I found it really interesting - they check the heart chambers, brain, all organs, blood flows, blood flow of the umbilical cord. They did say ‘do you want to know the sex?’ And then at every scan after kept saying we THINK it’s a girl.

I can’t believe it but I’m 14 weeks and 2 days already! Due 1st June so I’m one of the first and I’ve been told by the midwives they may have to deliver early so might be a May baby. Having fortnightly scans as I’m high risk so get to see the baby again on Weds. Can’t believe how quickly time is going by now!

DevonMum2Be · 04/12/2023 07:29

Thank you @cosymama2020 - DH has convinced me to wait and hear from the EPU team first and then we’ll book a private scan if they can’t get us in quickly.

I’ve read that about the brown blood too. It was just such a shock seeing it on Saturday morning - I’ve had no bleeding at all for the whole pregnancy, so my mind immediately jumped to the worst, but reading a lot of old MN threads, it actually sounds not uncommon. Several posts I found mentioned brown vaginal discharge after a BM at 11-ish weeks, which is exactly what’s happened to me.

Keeping everything crossed. Thank you for your kind words x

VJFord · 04/12/2023 07:47

@DevonMum2Be my only tip with private scans is to check that the place you're going to is clinic with proper diagnostic sonographers/doctors. Some places are basically only good for some pretty pictures. The CQC website is a good place to look. But I hope your EPU can get back to you quickly and that you might be able to be seen by them very soon. Wishing you all the best!

oop · 04/12/2023 07:52

Hope EPU manage to get you in soon @DevonMum2Be

We're going to need a new thread soon!

Goldie1234 · 04/12/2023 08:40

Good luck getting a scan soon @DevonMum2Be !!

@cosymama2020 that's so nice you get to see the babe fortnightly! What are you high risk for, if you don't mind me asking ? I can imagine also a bit nerve wracking if you're having to go in every 2 weeks !
I've been puy as high risk after my booking in appointment as I was induced early with both my children for reduced growth, fluid and movement, so I'm hoping they'll give me lots of extra scans !! Love a scan!

And yes to a new thread ! I'm afraid I'm not best friends with technology so not much help...

DevonMum2Be · 04/12/2023 12:34

Not good news unfortunately. Had a scan at EPU this morning, the sac was there but the foetus was only measuring about 6 weeks. It’s either stopped developing or is 5 weeks behind, but there’s no way it can be 5 weeks behind.

I have another appointment on Monday to see what’s what and then I suppose it’ll be seeing about management, if that’s the right term? I’m not sure if it is, sorry.

I can’t understand why it stopped developing but stayed there. And it’s been there all this time and I didn’t think anything whatsoever was the matter until the weekend.

💐 to everyone.

VJFord · 04/12/2023 12:43

Hi @DevonMum2Be I am really sorry to read that. I've been through two early losses myself so if you do have any questions about it and the different management options, please feel free to PM me. Sending you a hug xx

Goldie1234 · 04/12/2023 13:50

So so sorry @DevonMum2Be , that's the worst news. Just so unfair. With my first pregnancy the baby stopped growing but like you, nothing else happened, the sac kept growing etc. We found out at the 12 week scan, wouldn't have known otherwise. I remember someone saying to me it must be really snuggly for the baby in there, they just wanted to stay. I hope that gives you some kind of comfort too at such a hard time. I think the procedures have changed a lot since then, but good luck on Monday with whichever way you choose. Sending lots of love X

oop · 04/12/2023 13:52

I'm really sorry to hear your going through this @DevonMum2Be. I had a mmc in April and like you i had no idea that anything was wrong. Thinking of you.

@DevonMum2Be , really sorry to hear the little bean hasn’t developed. I’ve been there back in 2019 and MMC is very cruel! Sending you lots of hugs xx
