Random question for those who have had a sweep. Do they use a speculum or do they just use their hands/lube? It doesn't matter either way, just wondering what to expect xx

Eryr22 · 10/11/2022 17:22

@CurlyNo2 😂

So I started having period pains early October but they weren't much to right home about. Would last for hours on and off but were only mild. Not every day.
Had my first sweep 9 days ago and they said I was 3cm and the period pains were likely contractions.
Had contractions for 10 hours later that day (definite contractions that I could easily time) but they fizzled out eventually and really weren't that painful! Moderate period pains kind of bad? Had contractions for another 2 hours the day after which were probably moderate-bad period pains?
Then nothing for 5 days until I had another sweep!
At my second sweep I was 4cm dilated. Started having pains that felt like trapped wind on and off over the next 2 days. These hurt a lot more but I would only have them every few hours for a few minutes.
Had another sweep today. 5cm. Have been getting that trapped wind pain for 4 hours now, every sort of 15 minutes? I'd say we're probably at moderate on the pain threshold!

So long story short we think all of these pains I've been having have been contractions 😂 but they're stop/start and not as painful as the real thing!

@roobearbaby For my sweeps they use 2 fingers with some lube

Eryr22 · 10/11/2022 18:35

I can't deal with my spelling mistakes!! Write, not right! 😂

roobearbaby · 10/11/2022 18:38

@eryr22 it's a shame they have been going on for SO SO long but great you have made it that far dilated with a maximum moderate pain!

I hope the rest isn't too bad and goes a bit quicker for you ❤️.

Thanks for letting me know about your sweeps. I just like to know what to expect xxx

Eryr22 · 10/11/2022 19:23

@roobearbaby thank you! There's definitely pros and cons to it!

If you have any questions about the sweep let me know! I'd say it's more uncomfortable than painful. And the discomfort is so individual because it all depends on how your cervix is looking. Hope it works for you! Even though I haven't had the baby yet the sweeps definitely caused contractions and if each contraction is causing my cervix to dilate then it's worth it for me! X

TFMinx · 10/11/2022 19:37

@roobearbaby a sweep for me was not painful in the slightest. A friend of mine said it was akin to being badly fingered behind the bike sheds 😂. Sorry to bring the tone down.
She basically popped two gloved, lubed fingers in, swished them around a bit and brought them out again. It felt strange, but no pain. I've had blood since and I think some of my plug has come out. Been getting some mild cramps, but nothing to write home about.

roobearbaby · 10/11/2022 19:51

Hahahaha that analogy has absolutely cracked me up 🤣🤣🤣.

I was offered one at my 38 week appointment and declined but I think il ask for one at my appointment at 40+3.

I'm not really bothered if it is painful or not (although everyone has said it uncomfortable/not too different to a smear test in terms of sensation).

I'm glad it isn't a speculum though, not a fan of those! Although I'm about to push out a baby so I suspect a speculum will be small fry after that 🤣🤣🤣

OtiMama · 10/11/2022 19:53

@Eryr22 imagine if you get to like 8cm with just those feelings. Sounds like the longest first stage of labour ever!

haha @TFMinx don't think you can bring the tone down at this stage!

I agree about a sweep being different for everyone. Bit like a smear being different levels of discomfort for some. Also depends on how rough the midwife is. Last time I had two and the second person was definitely a lot rougher in terms of how quick and far she "swept".

Eryr22 · 10/11/2022 20:04

@TFMinx this analogy is bang on 🤣

@OtiMama I know!! At this rate I'll turn up to my induction Sunday and they'll tell me to start pushing! 😅 for anyone wondering incase they end up in a similar situation, because I'm already dilated they're going to break my waters and see if that causes things to progress before starting me on any drugs

And I second what @OtiMama said! I've had 2 midwives do my sweeps. One of them is definitely rougher but hers always seem to get things going more!

ALittleBitofVitriol · 10/11/2022 21:39

Wow @Eryr22! Have they told you anything about bubs position? I would wonder about baby being a bit posterior or something, not quite the optimal head position for cervix pressure to really get things going? Who knows our bodies are weird 😄 can't possibly be long now!

roobearbaby · 10/11/2022 23:44

I'm back. But I'm here to have a moan.

I'm so bloody done with being pregnant now. Everything "down below" is just in bits.

I'm leaking wee but struggling to wear a pad because my underwear has been digging in to underneath my bump and caused sore skin and just to top it all off I now have hemorriods.

Just feeling overdramatic about it all tonight 😭😭🤣

SUSB2016 · 10/11/2022 23:46

@roobearbaby ahhh that sounds frustrating! I hope you get some relief soon 🙂

40+1. Went for a walk up a hill which triggered BH...and then nothing. Had sex...still nothing. I don't know what more to do but I am readyyy

greenerfingers · 11/11/2022 00:11

I feel so bad moaning when I have weeks left but I feel exactly the same. And ditto to the haemorrhoids @roobearbaby. They started a week ago and can't believe it. Fear for labour now and the pressure gah!

I'm on a nesting craze and I can't control it. Like it's driving me mad that I can't control it because I just want to relax. Today I deep cleaned the ovens, the washing machine (literally opened everything up), and am now thinking to wash my sofas. Somebody needs to come stop me as I can barely move but the urge is just insane. Other than the sofas now there is NOTHING to do. I can wash the baby's clothes but I decided not to open them till I see the baby and figure out the size. So there's no point to that.

I'm also wide awake and will have to be up at 6. No idea when I'll even fall asleep at this rate.

roobearbaby · 11/11/2022 00:27

And my stretch marks are itchy 🤣.

I'm feeling sorry for myself tonight

OtiMama · 11/11/2022 02:18

@roobearbaby I am with you on all those symptoms. Never had any of them first time round! Awake again as normal, only good thing is I went to bed 9.30pm. Although no position is comfortable now.

Think we all need to get more oxytocin following to get these babies out rather than overdoing it. I need to follow this advice too.

@Eryr22 fingers crossed breaking your waters will start everything off. A friend of mine first time dilated to quite far without realising it. Second time she was induced 4 weeks early and she actually had the baby quite quickly for an induction. They said she was already contracting pre induction but she didn't know.

TFMinx · 11/11/2022 06:38

I'm with you @roobearbaby 40+2 now. Sweep yesterday gave me a few cramps but now nothing. DH and I dtd last night and nothing. Walking up and down what can only be described as the world's steepest hill to take DS to school, nothing. Hot curry, nothing. I am so fed up! It's also getting closer to MIL's birthday and if baby arrives then, we'll never hear the end of it!
Thinking of raspberry leaf tea, but I reckon I'd have to drink gallons of the stuff 😭

curlywurly10 · 11/11/2022 08:20

ughhhh been woke up for most the night with bad lower back pains. Have had a very broken sleep so i'm glad i passed out somewhat early last night, but doesn't really help how tired i feel now. Hoping this pain subsides soon as i can't be bothered with it on top of everything else. On the bright side i've got a 38wk scan this morning and i'll get to see my baby again which is the one of the only highlights these days!

I've been overthinking and worrying about a million different things this morning but i think i'm just finding anything to stress about at this point, i know it's insignificant things yet they cloud my head 😑

Hope everyone else is doing well this morning

Is it ok to be annoyed that I'm not on the birth list yet? I'm only two days over, but having my DS early means I was fully expecting to have DD here already 😭

NotAdultingToday · 11/11/2022 09:05

Hey everyone im tentatively back in the land of living, i feel much better today despite not getting any sleep un 4 as ds2 just fancied being awake 😂

I spent most of yesterday asleep while husband had ds so i could switch off, it was so needed!

I hope everyone is ok, im thinking of you!
And congratulations to those who have had their babies 😊 im hope the list is right ☺️

@TFMinx its totally ok! I was annoyed when i got to my due date with ds1 😂 its hard when your kind of prepared for one thing and another thing happens

CurlyNo2 · 11/11/2022 09:08

Oh that birth list makes me happy!!

I’m so fed up and tired today. I’m praying I get the phone call today from the hospital with my date for next week. Positive vibes please….

I’m craving a bacon butty this morning and in two minds to either ring for a delivery or walk up (cafe literally at top of my road).

Somethingabitdifferent22 · 11/11/2022 09:10

@NotAdultingToday
ive had an extremely windy baby for three days and 1.5 hours sleep a night feels like torture. But aren’t these babies just the cutest things in the world!

hope your doing okay ❤️

Beanniebaby22 · 11/11/2022 09:30

@CurlyNo2 @TFMinx I am also fed up now. 39 weeks today, so not overdue yet but so ready to meet this baby!
I thought things were happening yesterday, woke up with waves of intense cramping in my back and abdomen, turned out it was just my IBS playing up and a trip to the toilet put a stop to it 😳 **sigh….

VolcanicProtectorMan · 11/11/2022 09:37

So I’ve had two toilet trips this morning that were ‘loose’ shall we say, and bits of my plug have been coming out for a couple of days now. I went back through my whatsapp messages from last time I went into labour and this is what I told my DH happened the day before I had my DD last time, contractions started that evening. God I hope the same thing happens this time. I’ve been willing the baby to stay in as my DD has been ill but she is finally back in nursery today!
