@Ashleighz88 my friends would know straight off too lol I usually love a glass of wine.
I've told most of my close friends but not people I don't see much of as haven't needed to, not told work yet waiting until the scan but will be glad to tell them as I haven't felt great some days. Feel nervous about telling my boss though!

LouNewMum · 21/10/2021 16:28

Makes sense Ashleigh, I’m nervous about telling work too! Have only been there 10mnths!

But I’m sure they’ll understand xx

LouNewMum · 21/10/2021 16:30

I’ll be 12 weeks by mid November, so not long to go.

For some weird reason, I still feel cautious about telling ppl at the 12wk stage. Almost like it will jinx it or something 🤷🏽‍♀️
But maybe I should jst go for it x

Ashleighz88 · 21/10/2021 17:03

@LouNewMum I'm sure they will understand. Life plans can't go on hold for work. And all companies seem to promote the mental health/ good work life balance.

I'm also nervous about telling people at 12 weeks. We had IVF and it just makes me very paranoid that something is going to go wrong.

I've got no choice though because I'm a bridesmaid and need to tell the bride I won't be in the wedding (I'll be ready to drop). 🙈

robyna · 21/10/2021 17:08

I've had my letter through for my dating scan but have a problem! I work in a school and I've already had quite a few appointments as I'm high risk, work have been great and haven't asked what they're for. My scan is for the first day back after half term and I break up for half term tomorrow. My problem is I'm not ready to tell them yet but if I don't tell them I'm worried they'll think I'm taking the piss with the time off. I think I might have to just tell my line manager?

Bubbasmama2017 · 21/10/2021 17:43

@robyna yes I think it's ok to tell them in that instance unless you can ask to move the scan forward to the Friday before?

robyna · 21/10/2021 17:46

Wait panic over! Major baby brain already 😂 I go back to work on 1st so I have a good week to tell them. I have another scan through the specialists next week anyway so at least I can tell them after I have that scan if all is okay.

cloudpopbump · 21/10/2021 18:44

@Minster2012 @morphe thanks for the info re the test x

Sarah239 · 22/10/2021 08:13

Hi @Hbythesea ! Will you be 12 weeks at the appt or is it more like 8-10 weeks?

At my booking in appt we went through some medical/social history questions on the phone. Then I went into my GP to see the midwife have blood taken, did a urine sample, did blood pressure, height and weight. So the blood tests etc could be what they are referring to by screening. This is meant to be done before 10 weeks.

OR if you will be 11-14 weeks it could be the dating scan if it's an ultrasound. They will scan your tummy and take some measurements of baby to determine your due date and screen for Edward's/Patau/Down's syndrome. They only screen you for those things if you want to be screened though.

I hope that helps! Good luck xx

Elsie2021 · 22/10/2021 08:49

Feel like we’ve been a little quiet later. All just bobbing along waiting for those 12 week scans! I’m 10 weeks tomorrow and waiting for my letter to arrive.

When it’s everyone else’s? Hoping hearing about some of yours will see me through to mine!

Hope everyone is feeling okay. It’s nearly the weekend xx

GinnyBee · 22/10/2021 09:10

@Elsie2021 I'm 10 weeks on Sunday so really similar! My scan is on 8th November, will be 12+2 then. I have my first midwife appt next Thursday, but she sent the referral for the scan through when she first called to book me in so I got it early. It took just over a week from the referral to get the letter.

I'm also nervous about telling work. I only started in August and feel a little bit bad for scooting off on maternity leave less than a year into the job. It's a tiny company with only three employees and no one else does my role, so they'll have to start recruiting again. My probation ends next week and I've already had the meeting confirming they're happy with how I'm getting on so will be formally getting a permanent contract soon.

EJLM · 22/10/2021 10:23

another one nervous to tell work I've been here 5 years but I've only been back 6 months from my last maternity leave oops! I'm 12 weeks on Saturday and got my scan on weds so nervous but excited at the same time x

robyna · 22/10/2021 10:38

@GinnyBee my scan is 8th November too, I'll be 12+4. I've got a scan this time next week too when I'll be 11 weeks so if all is good then I'm going to tell my line manager and ask for the 8th off. I'm more nervous about how to go about telling work, I'll have to arrange a formal meeting as I'll need a full risk assessment in place. Just sounds terrifying!

EastMidsGem · 22/10/2021 10:55

@EJLM I’ll also be 12 weeks on Saturday going by my period dates and my scan is Thursday next week - nice to hear someone at the same stage! I’m really nervous even though I had a scan a week ago due to spotting and everything was fine. I thought my nausea had died off on Saturday as I had a few days with barely any sickness and then on Wednesday I started with headaches and sickness! I do feel my symptoms are shifting though, I’m getting less back ache and “growing pains” than I was a few weeks ago

Minster2012 · 22/10/2021 12:43

@Elsie2021 & @GinnyBee my scan is very close to yours, on 11th when I should be around 12+2

I've had awful headaches for the past 2 days which isn't good

I had my midwives booking in appointment on monday and I was there for nearly 2 hours due to my complicated medical history. She has referred my to be consultant led which I expected but she said it doesn't automatically mean the additional scans which will be frustrating!

Elsie2021 · 22/10/2021 14:22

@GinnyBee and @EJLM I wouldn’t worry about telling work. They’re not allowed to be funny about it! I was really nervous but my manager was actually really excited for me.

Just got my scan through! It’s 10th November so I’ll be between 12+2 and 12+6 depending on whether you go by last period, predicted ovulation or dating at early scan! It will be nice to have a more definite due date.

Looks like all our scans are fairly close together!

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 22/10/2021 14:38

Hi, I’ve not been on the thread for a while. I’ve been suffering such horrible ‘morning’ all fucking day long sickness and really struggling, but all ok otherwise.

I have my scan on Monday, I’ll be about 12+5 weeks. I’m really lucky I’m at a hospital that gives you an nipt test as part of your 12 week scan. Hopefully all will be well and looking forward to seeing my baby and the sickness will all be worthwhile!

I had quite severe morning sickness with my first 2 but this is something else altogether. I’m 12 weeks now and this week has been the worst so far. Just hope it doesn’t last much longer. My eldest is off school for half term and I’m so struggling to look after 2 children while feeling like this. I had the tv on all day yesterday and had to order a deliveroo McDonalds as I literally couldn’t open the fridge to make them lunch without vomiting. They thought it was great Grin

RT65 · 22/10/2021 16:08

Also dreading telling work!!!

A promotion in our team that I've been wanting for ages has just come up and I'm now I'm questioning (1) should I go for it or is it misleading as they'll shortly need to recruit again for maternity cover? (2) will I still be able to focus on the job, or will I regret getting the promotion if it's more stressful than I'm imagining? (3) when I come back will I want the job, or will I want an easy ride for a while?

But equally, if I don't even try will I regret it later? So confusing and frustrating!!

Sarah239 · 22/10/2021 17:59

I'm also, not exactly dreading, but not sure what to say when I tell my boss...

In my heart I'm pretty sure I will a) take full year maternity leave and b) most likely not return to work after that year. Of course, I'm not sure how I'm going to feel but that is my current plan.

What should I tell my boss? Should I just say I'm not sure yet about returning to work after the year? Should I give him the impression that I am for my own security? Are there any legal obligations around this? My understanding is, I am entitled to a year of statutory maternity leave + pay (I know the latter doesn't last all year) and at the end of that year I can hand in my notice. I would only be liable to repay any additional contractual maternity pay (but I don't think I get any) if I don't return to work, but can keep the statutory pay.

Any advice?

AMM86 · 22/10/2021 22:45

@LouNewMum I told the headteacher at my school early on as I felt they should know in terms of risk assessments etc. It’s obviously confidential with her so it’s not phased me. Also made me feel better when I rang in sick one day as she could understand why instantly!

In terms of the socialising thing, I noticed that the anti-sickness tablets I’ve been prescribed say to avoid alcohol with them. Obviously I wouldn’t be anyway being pregnant but I read the other reasons the tablets may have been prescribed and one was anxiety related sickness. So, as we have a weekend in Newcastle this weekend, I’ve showed my friends a screenshot of the box saying avoid alcohol with a noooooo emoji, and claimed my sickness is work stress related. They all seem to have bought it!

Positive21 · 23/10/2021 10:13

So I seem to be getting sickness now at 11+4 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

I started to get some food aversions, not fancying a lot, gone off of some veg, gagging at the smell of the food waste etc and washing up Tupperware.

It's now definitely feeling like I'm hungover, sicky despite eating. I woke up twice feeling that groggy feeling when you wake from a nap. And then actually wretched when I thought about opening the food bin (I wasn't even at home, I just thought about it) 😂😂

Anyone else had this? 😂

Etonmess20 · 23/10/2021 11:03

@Positive21 oh don't say that, I'm 11+1 & have avoided it so far 😂

Positive21 · 23/10/2021 11:22

@Etonmess20 I was all smug and it's bitten me in the backside 😂 however it's not stopping me from eating, in fact I'm eating more 🤦🏼‍♀️

GinnyBee · 23/10/2021 11:31

Noooo @Positive21 ! I don't want to know this! I felt that hangover from 6+1 to 7+4 and have since been feeling much better but I'm 10 weeks tomorrow, I really hope it doesn't come back!

Etonmess20 · 23/10/2021 11:49

@Positive21 😂 bless you, really hope you're feeling better soon & it's just a couple of day thing. I thought we'd have avoided it getting to this stage!
