Hey cloudy,

Saw your message although belated - I think you might have what I have which is pregnancy POTS hypotension - which is essentially very low blood pressure, and changing posture just sends everything haywire.

When you stand up your arteries are supposed to contract so the blood stays with your vital organs. But when you have low blood pressure this doesnt happen quick enough and you just feel like death until it corrects itself.

The only instant cure I have found so far is caffeine. Honestly I am puking continuously every morning until I have a triple espresso - tea doesnt cut it. Once I raise the blood pressure I can maintain it with small salt high meals and the occasional additional single espresso through the day.

I have been researching about why caffeine is not recommended and increased heart rate and high blood pressure is the reason. Considering the caffeine is balancing me out rather than sending it 'high' and also stopping me having borderline tachycardia in a midst of puking cold sweat mess. I am considering its a lesser of two evils - although that may be wrong!

Hope everyone’s coping with the nausea, spotting and cravings ok!

I freaked out this morning as had some red spotting but only a tiny bit (when wiping). And only once. It’s possible I caught myself with my nail by accident? Before my 6+4 scan (which showed heartbeat etc) I had pink spotting for an hour but the midwife said it’s common and not to worry unless it becomes heavy or painful. Now I’m 8+6 and feel tempted to book another scan for reassurance!

Sickness hasn’t gone away though ondansetron is keeping it under control so far (kind of). I’m craving Pringles of all things! Maybe need the salt.

Interesting about POTS and coffee. In my first pregnancy (also HG) the only thing I could keep down in the mornings was a double espresso (made in a mocha pot on the hob!) This was all the way to 37 weeks when I gave birth! Anything else I vomited but the espresso stayed down! I don’t think I had POTS but had very low BP throughout so guess the caffeine boosted BP a bit.

This pregnancy I can’t tolerate coffee at all, but I haven’t tried a proper espresso yet. Half a cup of normal coffee won’t stay down so I’m not sure about trying espresso!

Anyone else driving themself mad? I keep making things, then I think they smell weird, then throwing them away before I can eat/drink them. I've just thrown away three different drinks because they smell weird. I am usually the least fussy person but everything is wrong today!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 18/10/2021 11:01

@SerendipitySunshine - yes! The other day I asked my husband for a bite of his fettuccini alfredo, and as soon as I raised the fork toward my mouth, I changed my mind and gave it back to him. 😛 It's all so odd, isn't it?

Yes! Same here. My usual favourites are now unimaginable for me to eat. I find it so strange...

Finally got my “12 week scan” appointment through for 28th October. The last few days my nausea has really died down and only feel sick a couple of times a day now and rarely hanging over the toilet which is so much better… although of course we worry when symptoms die off don’t we! But I am over 11 weeks now so I think it’s fairly normal.

Looking forward to being able to tell people after the scan if all goes well.

I am still having huge amounts of milk to drink and seems to be the only thing I want to drink. Food is still pretty bland, salty and beige. Hoping this starts to improve because I loved a varied diet before!

Sarah239 · 18/10/2021 13:31

@EastMidsGem I got mind this morning too... mine is 12th November, feels so long away! Hadn't quite appreciated how long it was til 13 weeks 😫

EastMidsGem · 18/10/2021 14:16

@Sarah239 It really does drag doesn’t it? Especially as that’s the milestone you want to get past to feel a bit more secure

LemonSwan · 18/10/2021 14:25

@FateHasRedesignedMost

Interesting to see you had a similar experience! Although slightly terrified it lasted until 38 weeks Confused

Its funny because this is my first pregnancy, and I was like ahh I have no idea what I am doing. But I have recently started joking that my body seems to have an instinctive rebellious understanding as it seems to only require everything your NOT supposed to have during pregnancy. Blush

Jowd92 · 18/10/2021 15:53

Those of you who have received letters through for scans was that after you had your first mw appointment ?

EastMidsGem · 18/10/2021 15:57

@Jowd92 Yes, I think the midwife instructs the hospital you choose to send an appointment out and tells them how far along you are. Then the appointment comes for between 11-14 weeks I believe. My letter took 2 weeks to arrive though which was an annoying wait! She said to chase it if I hadn’t heard in 2 weeks which was going to be today but as luck would have it, it arrived this morning

Etonmess20 · 18/10/2021 16:37

@Jowd92 my letter arrived before my midwife appointment. Though strangely the letter for my midwife appointment said they would arrange it there & then but they obviously didn't need to

Sarah239 · 18/10/2021 16:52

@Jowd92 yes, when I had my booking in appointment, my midwife said I should get a scan letter within 2 weeks. It's been 1.5 weeks since my booking appt.

cloudpopbump · 18/10/2021 19:20

Thanks for all the messages re nausea. I'm going to look into the POTS and speak to the midwife, my blood pressure is usually on the low side.

Just vomited because of cooking smells. I've got all sorts of anti sickness pills from last time but I know the only one that'll work is ondansetron but that gives me other nasty side effects.

My work are being understanding and I'm just doing what I can when I'm not feeling like death.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm finding crackers and english muffins help. I cannot eat anything from a tree or out the ground.

Sorry to those feeling anxious, it's a horrid wait. I had a mc in the summer.

Sarah239 · 18/10/2021 19:25

Just found out my boss who came in to the office last week with "a cold" has tested positive for covid 😔 I was sitting opposite him. I'm so angry, I was already angry he chose to come in knowing he was ill, and now I know it's covid I'm even more worried!
It was Wednesday that I saw him. I have done lateral flows on Saturday and today, both negative. No symptoms yet, just a mild sore throat, but my throat has been weird the entire pregnancy. Just praying I will be ok.
Would appreciate good vibes, I will be so upset if this hurts the baby in some way 😔

Sarah239 · 18/10/2021 19:27

To make it even better last week was the first time I'd come in to the office all year! What are the chances...

stephlouwaz · 18/10/2021 19:43

Hi ladies!
I had my 12 week scan today and feel a bit deflated.. She did an external and internal and wasn't able to get any measurements (she did manage to measure baby's head) so couldn't confirm if the baby was healthy. All she did manage was to show me that bay had a heartbeat.
I feel so down, like its my fault? They've rebooked me in for another next week but I feel like, what can change in a week?

aNewYorkerInLondon · 18/10/2021 19:55

@Sarah239 - that's infuriating. The thing that gets me is that, for those of us who can work effectively from home, we're only really being forced back so that managers can be seen to be managing.

@stephlouwaz - maybe baby was just being contrary. I had an ultrasound at 10+5 and baby kept squirming away. NOTHING is your fault. Also, a LOT can change in a week. Keep hope in your heart. I will keep you in mine.

Sarah239 · 18/10/2021 20:28

@stephlouwaz Sounds like baby was just in a difficult position to get measurements ❤️ Not your fault at all, but I understand it may feel deflating, I think I would feel the same, Try and focus on the fact that they didn't find anything of concern (presumably they didn't), there was a heartbeat, and you have another scan next week :) did you have a full bladder? I think they advise that so that it's a bit easier, maybe an idea for next week if you hadn't already! I'm really looking forward to desperately needing a wee in the waiting room...! X

@aNewYorkerInLondon it was my choice to go in but I just didn't dream anyone would come in if they were ill! Oh well, at least I am fairly recently double vaccinated, and feel ok so far. Just needed a bit of a rant.

AMM86 · 18/10/2021 20:59

Can anyone who’s a) further along than me, or b) had a baby before, please give me some hope of when this sickness will end? I’m just short of 9 weeks and it’s horrendous.
I’ve been in tears tonight. I just feel awful! And then I feel ungrateful!
I had my first midwife appointment today and I’m not good with having bloods taken so think that’s contributed to my woefulness as I went very faint. We saw someone from eastenders outside the hospital though - one bit of excitement!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 18/10/2021 21:09

@AMM86 - I'm 11+3 by dates and 11+6 by my last scan. Starting yesterday, the nausea is beginning to life. I've got the bad cold everyone's got, so still feeling rotten, but I think I'm seeing the light at the end of the nausea tunnel. Until now, it's been misery.

morphe · 18/10/2021 22:39

Hello, I posted on the last thread but I've namechanged. @AMM86 I'm 12w by my scan last week and I'm feeling so much better already. My nausea has never been too bad but I've not been affected at all in the past few days. My main symptom was terrible tiredness and that's improved massively, I guess the placenta has taken over.

@stephlouwaz I think when the baby is bigger it might be easier to see so even a week later might help. It's definitely not your fault.

I have my 12 week scan booked in at the end of next week. Could have had it earlier but I've opted for an NIPT, so I wanted to wait until the results will be back so I can get all the relevant information at once. I haven't told anyone at all except DH so hoping all goes well and I can finally feel comfortable breaking the news to family!

SerendipitySunshine · 19/10/2021 06:52

Yes, I'm 11w 2d and I didn't feel sick yesterday. First day in weeks. I'm now panicking something has gone wrong but I know it's normal. 12 week scan next week feels like forever away! Hows everyone else feeling?

EastMidsGem · 19/10/2021 07:42

I’m 11 weeks 3 days (although last Friday when I had a scan, they said I was measuring at 11+ 1) and the last couple of days, the nausea has really eased off. Feeling so much better that I’m not having to hang over the toilet several times a day. I’ve hung over it maybe a total of 5 times since Saturday. Only once yesterday! I’m finding I still feel really tired mid afternoon but haven’t had to have a nap every day now. Also have actually managed a couple of vegetables over the last few days which I’m sure will help

FateHasRedesignedMost · 19/10/2021 08:18

AMM86

The sickness usually gets better around 12-14 weeks, when the placenta is functioning and takes over from the corpus leuteum (the thing that sustains the embryo and produces all the queasy hormones).

In my first pregnancy I had HG and felt slightly better by 15 weeks, and a lot better by 20 weeks (though remained medicated throughout). This time I’m on ondansetron for HG and still feel nauseous but vomiting less. I’m about 9 weeks and feel worse this week so upped the dose. It usually peaks around this time.
