Morning sickness (sorry)

I am 6 weeks pregnant and feeling sick as a dog. This is all new to me, wtf do I do? I feel starving but nauseous. Felt sick most of day, better after lunch, then threw up entire day's food about 4 pm, after which I felt MUCH better but now I am extremely hungry, just ate small amount of food and feel ill again. Is this just how it goes? Does it come and go or is this it now? Will it pass? Does it mean I am having a girl? Is there any hope in hell that I can pretend I am NOT pregnant when I am mooning around in a smock looking like death warmed up?

I had morning sickness for more than 5 months with both my dds. I SYMPATHISE!!! The ONE thing that made a difference for me was crystallised ginger...to nibble on. Don't overdo or you will get heartburn. Or ginger tea. dry toast? Usually it stops by 3 months

Apparently it is actually a good sign of a healthy pregnancy [hmmm]

Fireflytoo · 12/11/2007 18:10

Can get from Holland and Barret or other health food shops

crokky · 12/11/2007 18:10

Lots of sympathy to you. Try an icelolly or some ice or something like that. I was extremely sick and had a boy! If there was any point in the day where you felt reasonable, then I think you have some hope of feeling better at some point in the pg. You can only hide it if you invent an alternative illness!!!

francagoestohollywood · 12/11/2007 18:11

First of all, are you sure you haven't catched the stomach virus that's doing the rounds? it is awful and it left me with nausea for a week, of the kind I had when pg.
I felt sick with my two pg and I have a boy and a girl.
The only thing that helped me was drinking peppermint tea and eating liquorice.
It suaully fades away - gradually - after 12-14 weeks.
It's awful, try to rest as much as you can.

ruty · 12/11/2007 18:11

Ah Franny. I have been starting threads like this all over the place and been largely ignored. I am now [this is the time to place your hands over your ears and start singing loudly] almost 4 months preggers and feeling sicker than ever. Didn't actually start throwing up until few days ago but making up for lost time. Had nausea first time round but not like this. Have also wondered if it is a girl this time round but is that just baloney? Sympathy, my dear.

Twitmonster · 12/11/2007 18:19

OK. for my first two pregnancies [plus a missed miscarriage] I couldn't stop throwing up morning, noon and night.
In the end the only thing to stop hospitalisation was flat coke [or lemonade if preferred.
It started around 4-6 weeks and got worse until about 10-12 weeks. It eased off after about 20 weeks, stopping when I gave birth to ds1 but at 30 weeks with ds2.

Now with my second two pregnancies I ate and I ate and I ate. I threw up a bit, but not too badly. I had a girl and then a boy.

My theory is that you need to bump0 up your blood sugar. I did that with lucozade tablets and loads of carbohydrates [plus the odd chocolate treat ] If your blood sugar drops you feel crap, so you don't eat, so you feel worse...
I found that eating a mini marsbar [or similar] after I had eaten proper food helped with the feeling ill after eating.

FrannyandZooey · 12/11/2007 18:24

oh jeez there is no way I could eat a mars bar

or anything in fact

I did wonder if it might be a stomach virus, god I kind of hope so

as well as feeling nauseous, my stomach feels crampy and a bit as if I might have the runs, is that like morning sickness?

I felt continuosly icky [iyswim] as if I might have a sickness bug. I think the hormones can change how effective your bowels [spelt right? hm, can't think now lol] are.
I'm not suggesting you eat a big bar of anything, just a rectangle of dairy milk or similar. A couple of chocolate buttons.
Whether it's a bug or not, you're pregnant and have to keep eating.

ruty · 12/11/2007 18:32

i well i'm as constipated as that bloke who invented the Atkins diet. So maybe yours is a virus. I did wonder if i have food poisoning but I think I have already rung my gp in a panic 3 times so far in this pregnancy so refuse to do it again.
I'm obviously going to hijack ALL your pregnancy threads.]

Twitmonster · 12/11/2007 18:32

I know you don't feel like eating but I kept thinking 'eat through the icky feeling'
Try to think of it as you are so hungry you feel sick.

Twitmonster · 12/11/2007 18:33

it affects everyone differently....

Heathcliffscathy · 12/11/2007 18:36

franny congratulations, i totally missed that.

ginger is fab for morning sickness. and you need to keep your blood sugar stable....little and often for food.

smelling a lemon helps with bouts of nausea, sounds silly but really helps!

ruty!!! ohmigod i've just seen that! you too! bloody hell what is going on! congratulations woman!!!!

ruty · 12/11/2007 18:38
Grin
TellusMater · 12/11/2007 18:41

Sophable!

I always say "sniff a lemon" and people always think I'm barking.

But it got me through a 9am lung dissection at 9 weeks (sorry Franny), so it must be doing something right.

ruty · 12/11/2007 18:43

[vomit]

Heathcliffscathy · 12/11/2007 18:44

lemon sniffing rules.

TellusMater · 12/11/2007 18:45

Not 'til afterwards...

Yes, sorry. Was trying to stress it's efficacy, but went too far

Anyway, sniffing lemons....

KashaSarrasin · 12/11/2007 18:53

I'm 6 weeks too and so far, thankfully, only have mild/moderate nausea. You have my sympathy!

Second (third?) the ginger suggestion, I can't do crystallised though as the sugar makes the nausea worse. I find that pickled sushi ginger works quite well though, must be the combination of ginger + vinegar + salt.

Haven't tried the lemon sniffing - off to do that now

Heathcliffscathy · 12/11/2007 18:56

god sushi ginger what a fabulous suggestion...

cider vinegar and hot water very good for irritated stomach lining

Twitmonster · 12/11/2007 18:57

i found salt and vinegar crisps and gerkins good. Perhaps it helped cut through the icky taste and the feeling too.

FrannyandZooey · 12/11/2007 18:58

I googled it this afternoon and found the sniffing lemons thing, which I thought was a lovely idea - but while it was a nice thing to do, it didn't stop me feeling sick. Then I thought it would be cunning to squeeze and drink the lemon juice (I do this sometimes when i am feeling a bit run down) and that helped in that it made me vomit copiously

I don't think I can eat

I had a small dinner and I just threw it all up again

maybe it IS the stomach virus? Oh god I hope so. Except that is it dangerous to have a stomach virus when you are newly pg?

so sorry for all those who have felt / are feeling rotten

xx

I felt sick for 12 weeks and none of the advice anyone gave me worked for me. It was a horrible feeling, to the point that I dread being pregnant again. I scoffed the disgusting things I was strangely drawn to when I could and desperately tried to avoid the millions of things that made me feel worse. Best thing? It all ended around 18 weeks. Good luck, lots of sympathy.

charliegal · 12/11/2007 19:01

I had a boy btw

ruty · 12/11/2007 19:04

i was cutting oranges and squeezing them, drinking the juice of loads of them in the first couple of months. Now the thought of them makes me feel sick. Now on cereal and weak elderflower cordial.
