Our grandson has thrived on aptamil.

RedGirl99 · 18/03/2021 22:43

@jellybe

Please don't use perfect prep machines they don't prepare the formula correctly, the powder isn't sterile so you need to put the boiling water on it to make it save for baby to drink.
That's what the hot shot is for...

Don’t be silly. They pass very rigorous tests.

jellybe · 18/03/2021 22:47

Yes but it doesn't give a big enough volume of water to ensure that all the formula powder has been sterilised.

jellybe · 18/03/2021 22:48

See nhs guidelines on peeping bottles

jellybe · 18/03/2021 22:49

Perfect Prep machinesSome people now use ‘Perfect Prep machines’. We advise you against using one of these machines. This is because they deliver a small volume (‘shot’) of very hot water and then add cool water to make up the rest of the feed. This is not sufficient to kill the bacteria in formula milk. The Food Standards Agency recommends using cooled, boiled water above 70 degrees centigrade to make up infant formula.

Taken from NHS guidelines.

Well aware of the guidelines thanks. The NHS also don't recommend making up feeds in advance which is what most people who don't use a prep machine do...

Swings and roundabouts, either way, I have 2 very healthy children and have used the prep machine with both.

PinkSpring · 18/03/2021 23:01

For fuck sake, will certain posters stop banging on about breast is best. Take your boob obsession elsewhere..... FED IS BEST. Stop making women feel like shit because either they can't or simply don't want to breast feed. Seriously, that one poster who just won't drop it - you should be ashamed.

I tried and couldn't BF either of my children, it just didn't work out - I used C&G and it was fine, babies very happy on it and easy to get hold of.

Mylittlesandwich · 18/03/2021 23:05

@RedGirl99 I made every single feed for DS with boiled water at 70 degrees or above as NHS guidelines state and then cooled the whole bottle in cold water before giving to DS. My midwife advised against perfect prep machines and I trusted her judgement.

Grammerly · 18/03/2021 23:06

You should absolutely be able to switch between formulas. I think I tried them all with my children but they didn't have any allergies.

And yes all have to conform to strict standards so chose the cheapest. Honestly the rest is marketing.

Informed and supported is best.

Starsky82 · 18/03/2021 23:15

I’ve always used Cow and Gate, not had any problems. DC2 ended up on C&G Hungry Baby, but the other 2 have been fine on C&G first milk. I don’t imagine there’s much difference, I think I chose C&G the first time because it was cheaper than Aptamil but not sure if that’s still the case.

bleachblondemom · 18/03/2021 23:16

I actually had an antenatal class with a midwife who was very much for the perfect prep machine and totally recommended it. So not everyone in the NHS is dead against them. I’ve been using it since my 3 month old was born and he is perfectly fine.

Inkpaperstars · 19/03/2021 06:20

Interesting about perfect prep, we were advised not to use them or the self sterilising bottles in our nhs antenatal class. Also in the private antenatal the class leader said they had been recalled, but I never heard about that.

I was formula fed and absolutely thrived on it, no allergies, no issues with colic or reflux, ideal weight, walked and talked early, was very happy and relaxed and so was my DM.

The important thing is to keep yourself well OP, and you are absolutely doing the best for your baby doing that x

Shandilarr · 19/03/2021 07:27

I used to sterilise my bottles in an electric steriliser then make up all 8 or whatever in one go with boiling water from the kettle (not just boiled but cooled down a tiny bit). Then line them up in the fridge ready for use. 20 seconds in the microwave, a shake to get rid of hot spots and you're away.

My sons are all massive late teens now and it seemed so easy then. It seems like there are so many complications to bottle feeding nowadays, we all did it the same way as above and I don't remember anybody's baby ever getting ill.

Mummyof2Terrors · 19/03/2021 07:34

If the NHS suddenly received a lot of money from Tommee Tippee they'd change their stance on them. It's fine to have strangers on wards harassing mom's to buy terrible photos because they pay the NHS a tonne of money. Can only be a matter of time.

Parker231 · 19/03/2021 07:40

Fed is best every time. I used formula from day one and was recommended to use the brand the local supermarket stocked the most of so that there was no difficulties in getting supplies.
Highly recommend Perfect Prep machine - makes life so easy.

Thatsanicepear · 19/03/2021 07:46

I used SMA Little Steps and then Aldi Mamia when I moved closer to an Aldi. My son was very happy with both. Also echo what others are saying about the Perfect Prep machine. It's a godsend! I'd also recommend the Tommee Tippee anti-reflux bottles. My son never once suffered from it. Good luck and remember that fed is best!

Chelyanne · 19/03/2021 08:23

@shandilarr we we're told to pre-make each day then reheat when we had our eldest. By the time our 2nd came along it'd all changed but we still did pre-make some.
Only problem with that was we had more wasted formula if they weren't as hungry some days.

Chelyanne · 19/03/2021 08:27

Definitely get a brand easily available and always be a tub ahead in your cupboards.
There have been times of formula shortages, pandemic and China had a stint of having very unsafe milk and had family/friends send them it from here.
When our twins were young they had limits on how many you could buy at a time which was a nightmare when we were getting through at least 3 tubs a week.

popcornlover13 · 19/03/2021 08:42

@brushlaptop honestly I cant recommend it enough! My LO has reflux and suffered with colic and struggled with bowel movements. He is just a different baby since being on kendamil!

wanderlnst · 19/03/2021 08:57

I use Hipp Organic and my daughter enjoys it. We were on Aptamil for a while but it seemed to make her reflux much more painful and she would hardly drink.

Also use the perfect prep machine and have no issues with it. I clean and descale it regularly.

Your baby will fully enjoy formula Smile. Very sad to see people being rude to you about breastfeeding, particularly when they clearly haven't seen that you're unable to for medical reasons. I was hell bent on breastfeeding and then I lost half my blood and had a transfusion during my emcs and I made no milk because of this. None. Didn't get skin to skin for a full day with my dd as I was so poorly.

ItsSnowJokes · 19/03/2021 09:15

We used HIPP Organic and it was a fab milk. Perfect Prep machine was a life saver for us, especially those middle of the night feeds. Just make sure you use the right filter and follow the cleaning regime to the letter and you will have no problems.

Breast Halo
🙄 there's always one.
SylviaPlath1984 · 19/03/2021 09:19
@YawnyOwl Grin glad you said it first. The only food a baby needs
Do people who make these comments just get off on being sanctimonious or am I missing something ?

MaMaD1990 · 19/03/2021 10:18

This is such a disappointing thread to read. I hope the OP got the answers she wanted which were CLEARLY about formula feeding. She should not have to respond with why she doesn't breastfeed to appease the few - whether it's medical or she simply doesn't want to. She asked a question and it's been derailed by a couple of posters shoving breastfeeding down her throat with the undertone of "you're not doing best by your child". No wonder she hasn't come back.
