@daisyoranges

I failed miserably at breastfeeding. It’s still better than formula feeding. People are replying and going on about costs when there’s a free supply readily available. It does no harm to point this out.
It absolutely does cause harm, it all contributes to mums feeling like crap when they are unable to breastfeed, like they failed and aren’t doing the best for their child. I can’t imagine a single mum to be will suddenly change their mind on how they will feed their baby based on smug comments made on mumsnet on posts where they are irrelevant as the OP clearly meant formula milk.

OP I used Cow and Gate for 3dc, it was available in several local shops so no chance of not being able to get hold of it. Bottle feeding really wasn’t that much of a faff in the way people seem to think it is.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:29

Well, that sounds very difficult Flowers and of course there are times it isn’t possible to breastfeed: as I say, I failed myself.

Just the same, when people recommend milk based on cost and convenience I don’t honestly think it makes people akin to joining judas in the first circle of hell to say that no formula milk is as cheap or convenient as breast milk.

Sometimes people won’t want to and sometimes people will want to and can’t, of course.

But I wish OP all the best with her baby either way.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:29

I’m not smug in the slightest, blimey.

Professionalworrier · 18/03/2021 21:30

What?! Breastmilk is free! Nobody told me that, I thought I had to insert a pound up my arse electricity meter style before every feed. Figured if the baby was a slow feeder I'd really be skint. If I'd known it was so easy and amazing for my baby I would have breastfed.

FTEngineerM · 18/03/2021 21:30
@DaisyOranges - try having two newborns in two different hospitals and mum in another. Not convinced breastmilk is the most convenient option there...
To be pedantic: breast milk would still probably be the best nourishment but of course breastfeeding would be a ridiculous idea.

On the formula front, most have already said everything there is to say but if I was FF from the beginning next time I’d pick a brand with a few different types of milks because we’ve ended up on CMPA formula (aptamil) and I’m assuming one brand will get all the ingredients and what not from the same places so will taste the same/similar. Hopefully providing less upset if you had to switch to hungry baby/CMPA/lactose free or what ever.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:35

a lot of people don’t consider the costs involved with formula, professional

I honestly understand some women feel pressured to breastfeed.

But the other side of the coin exists too. People pressurising you to formula feed so they can ‘help’. People pressurising you to formula feed because it fills the baby up longer, because you can gauge how much they are having, because getting your breasts out in public is just wrong, because you tried once and it didn’t work ...

A lot of people (including my own perfectly well educate OH!) think the way to feed a baby is with a bottle. Even the emoji on my phone when I type baby is this 🍼.

That has a subliminal effect and while I’m not saying it’s true for OP, or you, or anyone on this thread, I do think it doesn’t occur to some women that they can breastfeed - formula is so normalised.

So I won’t apologise for saying so, I’m not trying to upset anyone but I do think breast milk deserves a boost.

With that being said I’m not trying to upset anyone either so will leave it there. Flowers

CoconutFatFeast · 18/03/2021 21:35

@FTEngineerM I didn’t say it wasn’t the best nutrition in an ideal world. I was highlighting that it was not the most convenient option in response to a pp who claimed that breastfeeding is always the most convenient option.

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 21:36

OMG @daisyoranges, just stop now.

I’ll stop when I want to thanks um not when you decide Hmm

brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 21:41

I guess no one should feel pressured either way 🤷‍♀️ do what's right for you

I found breastfeeding SO hard at first, the first 6 weeks were honestly hell, bleeding nipples, multiple bouts of mastitis, engorgement, I almost gave up SO many times but as soon as I was around 2 months in then it was fine and I actually saw the benefits (convenience etc, but I didn't have twins!) for some women though it never eases up so what's right for them is to formula feed. Or I guess if they don't want to in the first place 🤷‍♀️

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:42

I don’t know how twin mums manage but to be fair that doesn’t just extend to breastfeeding! They should have a medal!

Pancakepipsqueak · 18/03/2021 21:42

@daisyoranges No one is asking you to apologise, but if you feel so passionately about it maybe you should start your own thread, or reply to one where the OP is asking about breast milk or breast feeding advice, rather than posting on a thread where a new mother who cannot breast feed asks about formula recommendations.

I do think breast milk deserves a boost.

I completely agree with you @daisyoranges but I’m not sure a thread where the OP cant is having the beneficial affect you want or effect I never get it right.

savethewales · 18/03/2021 21:44

@savethewales

Oh do fuck off Smile
This was to @minniemoocher.
brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 21:46

All mums are amazing but twin mums are a whole other breed of superwoman!

Trustisamust · 18/03/2021 21:46

My advice would be to speak to your GP 're the meds and breastfeeding if you want to give it a go?
I obviously don't know what you're taking, but alternatives can often be found.
I know for sure this is the case say for anti depressants.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:46

pancake I did answer the OP, but I was compelled to answer because I felt owl was getting a hard time.

Breast milk is the best option for babies but there are times when it isn’t possible or when someone doesn’t want to. It doesn’t make it some sort of unutterable fact - or it shouldn’t.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:47

I always get effect and affect the wrong way round too Smile

Sorry OP - back to topic!

Pancakepipsqueak · 18/03/2021 21:49

@daisyoranges Again, no one said it was unutterable, or that it wasn't fact. Just that in this thread, it isn't useful or helpful.

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 21:49

@daisyorangesIt seems like only 15 minutes ago you were saying

With that being said I’m not trying to upset anyone either so will leave it there

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:50

Um like I say I will stop contributing to the thread when I decide to and not because you are throwing your weight around on it.

sHREDDIES19 · 18/03/2021 21:51

For my second I chose HIPP organic I think it was a bit pricier but she loved it and had no wind issues. I think all babies are different though and what works for one might not work for another.

Missreginafalange · 18/03/2021 21:51

@daisyoranges

OP asks what the best newborn milk is and owl is correct, it’s breast milk.

That doesn’t mean people can’t make other choices but breast milk is best.

I disagree... a fed baby is best..

Hate the holier than thou attitude when it comes to breastfeeding, there are many reasons why a person chooses to formula feed or breastfeed and guess what none of them are your business.
