I failed miserably at breastfeeding. It’s still better than formula feeding. People are replying and going on about costs when there’s a free supply readily available. It does no harm to point this out.

crispychicken12 · 18/03/2021 21:05

@YawnyOwl there's always one.....

Hoppinggreen · 18/03/2021 21:06

OP feed your baby how you choose (or how you can if illness etc is a factor). It’s a good idea to choose baby milk based on good availability and also whether they do ready made cartons for ease of use when out and about it. Also try Dr B anti colic bottles, these made a huge difference for us
As for the smug Dickheads who answered “breast milk” go and find another thread to be irrelevant on.

brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 21:07

@daisyoranges yep for faff factor it's def worth checking that she can't feed with those meds as bf can be more convenient and of course free but if she just doesn't want to totally her choice.

I breastfed for almost a year (though mixed fed from 6 months) so definitely an advocate of it but I think some people just aren't keen/find it gross/just don't want to for whatever reason. I think women should be able to birth and feed their babies however they want as long as it's safe and with baby's best interest at heart.

Agree formula is actually soo expensive if you think about it. Especially the ready to feed ones which is what you would go for in the first few days/weeks but dear lord even the cheapest it would cost at least £6.50 per day so 1 month would be £195 then hopefully onto the powder but even that isn't cheap.

popcornlover13 · 18/03/2021 21:07

We started off on c&g but it didn't agree with our LO, we now use Kendamil organic which I order either directly from them or through Amazon and our baby is so much happier. It's a little pricey but completely worth it for the change we've seen in him! X

Yes it does

Has OP said that cost is a factor?

bleachblondemom · 18/03/2021 21:09

@daisyoranges believe it or not, women who formula feed are fully aware that breast milk is free. No need to point it out. It’s totally irrelevant.

brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 21:09

@popcornlover13 I've heard kendamil is the next big thing! Organic and the tin is very swish looking isn't it!

So breastfeeding meds to a baby is better than feeding it formula? Really? Hmm

I'm so glad for you that you see no harm in telling a mum-to-be, over and over again, that they're not doing the best for their baby. Good for you!

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 21:11

And, by the way, if we're going to be pedantic, then breastfeeding is not free, because you need to eat more food to provide it.

supersonicginandtonic · 18/03/2021 21:11

@daisyoranges people like you make me really f*ing angry!
I had utter fuckwitts, keep banging on about how "breast is best" etc etc, after my first was born. The pressure I felt under was unreal. I was made to feel a complete and utter failure by both friends and professionals when I couldn't carry on. I'm sure it led to my post-natal depression too.
Yes we know the ideal way to feed a baby is breast milk but it's not for everybody so take yourself off to a thread where somebody wants breast feeding support.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:11

brush I honestly think a lot of people don’t consider it.

People mention pressure to breastfeed but it was the other way for me. I had pressure to formula feed and I really didn’t want to but ended up having to, although did mix feed for the first three months.

Obviously I’m not trying to make the OP or anyone feel bad! But people replying and mentioning cost and convenience as a factor - well, you can’t beat breast milk, for either!

I hope you can find milk that suits you and baby, OP. Fwiw we use cow and gate and only ever buy the ready made stuff as I really really can’t be bothered messing about with boiling water but that probably is really lazy and that was one key motivation in really wanting to breastfeed.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:12

It is really hard super and I’m sorry I made you angry Flowers I had the same pressure but the other way and it is upsetting. Hope you’re okay now.

lambo88 · 18/03/2021 21:13

We used cow and gate as back in 2018 there was a reason why we didn't use aptimal (can't remember the reason) and we found out it's basically the same as aptimal as there the same company or something xx

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:13

That’s a bit of a myth um, you’d have to be seriously malnourished to not produce milk (assuming you can produce milk normally in the first place that is.)

I barely ate anything for the first eight weeks, it didn’t effect my milk supply really.

Pancakepipsqueak · 18/03/2021 21:16

I use HIPP Organic - think I fell for the marketing like others.
Also really recommend a Tommee Tippee Perfect prep! Saves the hassle of boiling water and waiting for the bottle to cool.
Also rolling my eyes at anyone who comes onto these threads that ask for formula recommendations and suggest breast milk. You're really funny and witty and so so so helpful.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 21:18

Not wanting to restart an argument but I’m fairly sure the perfect prep is not recommended nhs link

I’m not trying to make anyone who did use it feel bad, by the way, it is purely for information.

Pancakepipsqueak · 18/03/2021 21:21

@daisyoranges You are correct. However, the use of the Tommee Tippee and similar is so widespread, I'm sure that we'd know of an issue if there was one.
It's simply that the instructions to make the formula from manufacturers is different to how the Tommee Tippee PP makes it - so it's more of a 'if something goes wrong the formula manufacturer' is not at fault. The Tommee Tippee machine makes the formula in a completely sterile way though - just different.

Amichelle84 · 18/03/2021 21:24

I used aptamil for no particular reason tbh, however it is always available and comes in ready to go made up bottles if you need it.

Also, please don't let any comments on here upset you. You don't need to justify your reasons.

I got pressured in to breast feeding even though the meds I was on meant baby couldn't have any live jabs for a year because I then in turn compromised his immune system.

CoconutFatFeast · 18/03/2021 21:25

@DaisyOranges - try having two newborns in two different hospitals and mum in another. Not convinced breastmilk is the most convenient option there...

Dragon23 · 18/03/2021 21:26

We used Hipp organic- I found it easy to get hold of and stocked at both local supermarkets to me. Our corner shop also stocked the ready made bottles of it but I know for others it isn’t as available in their area so deffo worth checking out. We tried a couple of different brands but this suited DS the best- he was combo fed expressed milk and formula as he couldn’t latch well. He refused CandG and aptimal, and got awfully constipated on SMA. Do what suits you OP but don’t worry about one brand being the best- they all have to meet a particular standard- just focus on what suits you and your LO. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Pancakepipsqueak · 18/03/2021 21:27

@CoconutFatFeast It's not convenient when you're child is fed by NG tube either! but no no no We'll just continually spout the breast is best bullshit.

brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 21:27

@daisyoranges that's interesting that they wanted you to formula feed. My experience was that the nhs really pressured people to breastfeed but then provided no support on how to actually do it 🤷‍♀️ 3 expensive lactation consultants and 5 bouts of mastitis later i came to that conclusion 😂 I think if I had formula fed early on I would have definitely ignored my environmental conscience and gone for the disposable ready made ones at first. By 6 months I could kind of predict a bit better when my baby was going to feed so could time the whole boiling cooling thing a little better!

AnnaBananaFoFana · 18/03/2021 21:27

@YawnyOwl and @minniemoocher FED is best. Do jog on. Not that I have to explain myself to sanctimonious strangers on the internet, but we had to switch to formula after 6 weeks because I have a tumour on my pituitary gland that depleted my prolactin. If OP wanted advice on breastfeeding she would’ve asked for it.

OP, like others have said, formula is so strictly regulated that they really are the same thing essentially. Aptamil made my DD’s spit up really smelly for some reason and she was quite constipated. We got on best with SMA for the first 6 months. We’re now on stage 2 and she much prefers Aptamil now so we’ve switched again. SMA and Aptamil are both very easy to find so I would go with one of those two brands. Good luck 💐
