@daisyoranges i 'had' to top up with formula feed because my breast was removed due to cancer. Do you want to tell me more benefits about breastfeeding? Make me feel guilty I 'had' to switch fully to formula for DS at 6 months. Sometimes we do HAVE to formula feed. Going on about breast milk when you can't give your baby it is not helpful at all.

Horizons83 · 18/03/2021 22:08

We used Aptamil and Cow and Gate interchangeably, our baby didn't seem to mind (and as they are made by the same company I am sure they are the same thing in different coloured packaging).

For the first couple of months we actually used the pre-made rather than the powder. More expensive but made life so much easier, especially during the night.

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 22:09

One thing I would say - we had a steriliser that said it took 8 minutes. More than once Blush DD was crying for milk and we hadn't sterilised the bottles.... We thought that 8 minutes was endless because she was crying... No, when we timed it, it was more like 15 minutes Hmm

So, don't make our mistake - keep up with the sterilising!

Holzawolza · 18/03/2021 22:10

@daisyoranges you seem keen to say you still support OP however your comments completely contradict that e.g “breastfeeding rates are terrible and it’s a shame”
Get a grip. OP cannot breastfeed due to medication. It isn’t your place to question that, and actually, she doesn’t need to justify herself and it’s none of your business.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 22:10

I am sorry to hear you had cancer. However you have completely misunderstood me. I am not trying to make you feel guilty, why on earth would I want to make someone feel bad?

I had to top up with formula too and I certainly didn’t have anything like as ‘good’ a reason: we were just really crap at it, I suppose! Desperately tried but got nowhere and his weight plummeted.

It’s because of that I do feel so passionately about choice. I feel if we’d been properly supported I could have exercised my choice to breastfeed. I also feel that women should be able to exercise their choice to formula feed and no one should make them feel bad for it - that’s so not what I’m trying to do.

I hope you are fully recovered.

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 22:11

JFC.

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 22:13

I do think it’s a shame breastfeeding rates are so bad and I think a lot of that is because women get pushed into formula feeding, both explicitly and implicitly. I’m drifting away from the OP here, I know, but I know from my own experience the support just isn’t there, particularly in covid times. It really, really upset me and if I’ve made anyone feel upset then I genuinely do apologise as I wouldn’t want to do that. But I do think mentioning breastfeeding as a possibility shouldn’t be a big taboo either and it’s a shame it is.

brushlaptop · 18/03/2021 22:16

@Umbivalent someone needs to invent a super quick steriliser! I'm all for these ready to feed things, I would have slight guilt about the environment but I guess a bit rich considering I used disposable nappies...

Holzawolza · 18/03/2021 22:17

@daisyoranges you are not getting it. I suggest making your own thread if you would like to go on about the benefits of breastfeeding. That isn’t wanted here. It’s extremely unsupportive to someone that physically cannot do it.

hiimjackie · 18/03/2021 22:17

God I feel awful for OP after this thread was hijacked bless her

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 22:18

I haven’t mentioned the benefits of breastfeeding beyond it being free and easy.

The overwhelming message behind my posts is about choice and I’m a bit baffled as to why that’s apparently so contentious. I do think some people just want a fight and a drama though.

Umbivalent · 18/03/2021 22:19

Because you Just. Will. Not. Stop.

Yes! Those ready to feed things didn't exist back in my day, I would definitely have bought some! Blush

What are you not getting about the fact that it’s not a possibility here?

You asked why a breastfeeding mum getting formula suggestions wouldn’t get the same fury and I said it’s because that mum COULD formula feed if she chose, whereas breastfeeding IS NOT AN OPTION HERE so to keep going on about it is blindingly insensitive and your very next post was ‘but isn’t it interesting that it wouldn’t get the same response’ and you’re still banging on about it being a possibility and what a shame it all is. It is so, so unkind.

AliasGrape · 18/03/2021 22:22

I know, and I’ve contributed getting involved in arguing and that’s wrong of me.

I’m sorry OP. Congratulations on your pregnancy and hope all goes well xx

Professionalworrier · 18/03/2021 22:22

@daisyoranges As my mother would say, put down the shovel.

Thesearmsofmine · 18/03/2021 22:23

Jeez how is this still going on.

Poor OP having her thread jumped on like this. She cannot breastfeed(not that she has to justify herself anyway) and you still want to hijack her post to go on and on about breastfeeding. Your posts are irrelevant to her original question.

Holzawolza · 18/03/2021 22:23

@daisyoranges yes, it’s about choice. You’re right... OP HAS MADE HER CHOICE. it doesn’t require further opinion from you. If you haven’t got any formula suggestions, leave. I don’t know how I can say this any clearer.

eensyweensySpider · 18/03/2021 22:23

DS had Aptamil from pretty much day 1. I chose it based on reviews and recommendations from friends. We didn't experiment with other brands or taste test and there were no issues so we never swapped as he was always feeding well, thriving and gaining weight as expected. He's now on Aptamil toddler milk so no complaints from us :)

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 22:23

um the irony of that statement ... seriously. You have been having a tantrum that would shame my three month old for pages now and it’s embarrassing.

Yes, OP asked for advice on formula milk.

I have:

Agreed with owl that breast milk is best for newborns

Told OP we personally use cow and gate and it is fine.

Said that women should choose the method of feeding they want to - but it should be a choice, not something they are pushed into either way.

Is that really worth all this yelling and eye rolling and ‘JFC-ing’ and trying to push me off the thread?

It’s really embarrassing Hmm

daisyoranges · 18/03/2021 22:26

Sorry holza, unless you are MNHQ, I will post where I want, thanks: you don’t get to tell people to ‘leave.’

The majority of us are being perfectly civil.

OP, to repeat, cow and gate is fine for us, and I’ve only ever used the ready made bottles. They are more expensive but this baby is not a patient one so worth it!

jellybe · 18/03/2021 22:32

Unless you are vegetarian or vegan it doesn't matter they are pretty much all the sam. If you are veggie/ vegan then you'll want to check which ones have fish protein in them.

Latecomer131 · 18/03/2021 22:33

@daisyoranges breastfeeding is only "free" if a woman's time is worth nothing.

RedGirl99 · 18/03/2021 22:40

@daisyoranges you quite clearly have a lot of time on your hands this evening to keep dedicating yourself to replying to this thread with comments that are in no way at all related to what the OP is asking Hmm. Maybe try reading the room

OP, in answer to your question and as per PP's, I think they are all much the same. We started with Aptamil but then switched to Mamia as it was half the price. I think it's a bit of a myth that you can't switch between different types of formula because my little one has had pretty much every brand of the ready made bottles, depending on what we could get our hands on when out and about, and never had any problems.

Also, well worth investing in a Prep Machine, absolute life saver those things!

jellybe · 18/03/2021 22:41

Please don't use perfect prep machines they don't prepare the formula correctly, the powder isn't sterile so you need to put the boiling water on it to make it save for baby to drink.
