@Kpm7 I didn't start using the pump until my milk really came in, around day 7. When it was just colostrum, I hand expressed. I found it helped to massage the breast first for pumping, with strong downwards strokes towards the nipple to help with milk let down.

Kpm7 · 11/12/2020 20:19

@Jellycat2020 ahhh that may make sense. 7 days after baby arrives?x

Jellycat2020 · 11/12/2020 20:27

@Kpm7 yes, I think it was day 7, its all a bit of a blur! 😂

Kpm7 · 11/12/2020 20:36

@viixie I didn’t start trying to syringe straight away. When I was in the bath I would occasionally squeeze my boob and noticed I was producing.

Then after a few days of realising it was something I can store and save (liquid gold) I ordered some syringes. I only did a couple on the first day of the syringes but like I say I would squeeze my boobs daily before this.

After a bath is suppose to be a good time.
My boobs don’t really hurt it’s my thumb that’s hurting Grin

I couldn’t produce anything at first then my cousin showed me what to do xx

When are you due? Xx

viixie · 11/12/2020 22:25

@Kpm7 I am due on Wednesday 16th so I'm a bit late with the expressing 🥴 syringes have only just come though. My boobs are really aching and there's hardly anything in the syringe

Hi everyone, quick update - Poppy was born on 10/12/20 at 11:50pm by emerg c section. Had an awful very traumatic time and were both quite unwell so are in hospital for at least the next week HOWEVER she is perfect and I'm super happy and has made everything worth it, I'm so in love already and can't stop staring at all 9lb 2 of her😂😍😍😍 Hope everyone else is getting on ok!! X

Kpm7 · 12/12/2020 00:41

@Amyyy1 beautiful name and lovely weight congratulations. Wishing you both a speedy recovery. I am in bed wondering if I am having contractions Confused

@viixie I only started last week and due today.
Just keep giving them a little squeeze daily maybe ask someone who has breastfed or look online how to do the movement as I was doing it wrong first.
(Forgive me if your not new to this and know how already)

I understand some women can struggle more than others. My cousin didn’t manage to get that much to take to the hospital either.

Don’t stress maybe the baby will latch when they arrive if you did plan to continue. Xx

Jwl45 · 12/12/2020 04:45

How are all the new mummies doing? Not gonna lie I'm struggling this week! Quinn's sleeping at night has totally regressed, she only slept for 1 hour 40 mins between midnight and 8 am last night, I am shattered! She was going 3-4 hours through the night but this week she's been terrible. She has colic and I know they have a growth spurt around 6 weeks so I'm hoping it's because of that and next week is better - fingers crossed!

MrsSmith2020 · 12/12/2020 09:02

Hey all!
Our baby GIRL 👧🏼 Flora arrived at 15:53 on Thursday
She was 7.3 lbs and absolutely perfect in every way.

We are home now, recovering from the planned caesarean and taking everything slowly.

Breastfeeding was going great but I am sore from my own bad latching skills, so we are pumping and hand feeding her until the midwife can get here.

She's just amazing, everything I've ever hoped and dreamed for.

kkr168 · 12/12/2020 09:40

Congratulations @Amyyy1 & @MrsSmith2020 x

Our little boy is finally accepting a bottle, he woke every 3 hours last night & went straight down after. I feel amazing today, totally refreshed, just from having a good night's sleep!

peachypetite · 12/12/2020 09:47

@NaomiB79 the colic is bad I hear you. I’ve started plying white noise to calm her down and a dummy is helping her too. She doesn’t use it for very long but it definitely soothes her.

alphabetti · 12/12/2020 09:55

Congratulations to everyone who has had their babies. I just want to say to anyone that is wanting to breastfeed but finding the first few days really difficult try to not put too much pressure on yourselves but try to keep going until your actual milk comes in as it then became so much easier for me.

I didn’t manage to express colostrum but didn’t really know what I was meant to do to get it. Babies blood sugar levels were slightly low so special care decided she should have top ups of formula. I felt defeated like I wasn’t able to provide enough for her and my nipples were sore and starting to crack so I just started to give her ready made formula. She didn’t take much formula but I put it down to her being very mucusy from the fast birth. Anyway we went hole and for that first day and night I just used ready made formula and my partner went out and bought a tin of SMA.

On day 3 I woke up to very hard and hot boobs so decided to give things one last try rather than let my milk dry and regret trying. Things were then so different and baby been taking my milk and seeming content. (Not a good sleeper through night but that’s another story lol) My partner gives her a bottle of formula in early hours so I get a few hours proper sleep but apart from that she’s breastfed. So anyway if anyone like me and wanted to breastfeed but finds it difficult in the early days just try to hang on as I found things got so much easier once proper milk comes in. But also if anyone finding it too difficult or just not for them don’t eat yourself up as my older 2 were formula fed and now perfectly healthy teens so I think do what’s best for you as happy mummy happy baby.

MrsSmith2020 · 12/12/2020 10:05

Thanks for your advice @alphabetti I really needed to read this today. It's bloody hard work and she's only 42 hours old !

My left boob is currently blocked and I'm purely pumping Fromm right every 3 hours to give my boobs a rest as they are wrecked from cluster feeding on day 1.

Kpm7 · 12/12/2020 10:17

@alphabetti so lovely to hear.

The morning bottle your husband gives is that expressed or the SMA. I am wondering if I can do both if I struggle xx

Kpm7 · 12/12/2020 10:19

Oh wow @MrsSmith2020 congratulations I want my baby now hahaha xx

My friends baba was born October and now sleeps through the night so I feel we just need to get through the first 2 months Grin

I am just worried coz my husband is a workaholic and has OCD so I have already warned him not to comment on the house if I slack because I can imagine that will make me explode. Xx

lc86 · 12/12/2020 11:13

I remember with my first two that around week 11 I noticed a huge difference in the night and like they were finally in a good routine, whenever we have a bad night I just keep thinking that it definitely gets easier. @alphabetti lovely advice for anyone who is set on breastfeeding, I found day 7 my milk was definitely in and I think I probably would have found breastfeeding a lot easier at that stage xx

MaverickDanger · 12/12/2020 11:30

Congrats to everyone who has had their babies, there’s some gorgeous little faces & names!!

Solidarity with everyone who is still waiting - I’m not even at my due date yet & im fed up Grin

NaomiB79 · 12/12/2020 11:57

@peachypetite the colic is tough, they just scream for hours and nothing really consoles them, it's so hard to watch! We've tried everything we have been advised to / read about including: raising her head in the basket, sitting her up for 20 mins after a feed, baby massage, more baths we've changed to comfort formula, we've changed to Dr Brown's bottles, Infacol, Gripe Water, Colief drops (not all at the same time). It is getting slightly better now she is six weeks but hard to know what is the thing that is making the difference as we are trying so many! Xx
