I'm just trying to avoid going through my child being jaundice again and I've read for winter babies should be given vit d if breastfed

Hi everyone.

I didn't just want to drop off without an update. Don't want to worry anyone either as every story is different and we've had lots of complications from the start. The NHS are amazing especially when it comes to our babies and our little girl is heading in the right direction in hospital.

I was induced at 36 weeks (Monday) due to the babies growth slowing right down (below the 3rd percentile). During the induction, baby was monitored lots during the contractions and was showing she wasn't happy at all. The decision was then made for a c-section. I had to give consent but they were not advising me to do anything else or arguing not to do one. She measured 4lb 1oz at the thurs scan and on the following tues at 7am Eve was born by c section weighing 4lb 9oz. She was moved to NICU to support her breathing. On Tuesday, she must have worked so hard breathing on the machine that by Wednesday they needed to help her more and put her to sleep on a ventilator so she could rest and let the machines do all the work for her. But obviously getting this call was scary. Today she has been transferred back to the first machine she was on that lets her do some independent breathing with a little help. They have said her lungs are very immature but haven't made it clear when I ask whether that's immature for 36 weeks or immature for even 36 weeks. They just say babies are all different. We didn't get steroid injections before and they just say you don't when it's a natural birth. But it was an emergency c-section. They have reassured me it wouldn't have made a difference. I'm still in hospital with her and she's making progress all the time and has being monitored for literally everything. They want to try her off the machine as a next step but only when they have enough senior members of staff in. Other early babies have come and gone as well with just needing a little support. The machines do an amazing job, just our little girl needs more help. They also said they struggled to fit the tubes because of her having a small jaw. Again I asked is that because she's 36 weeks or is it small for 36 weeks and they just say every baby is different. They have sent off for blood tests and genetics tests and say it's procedure for NICU babies so they can tick every box and research why it's happening. Her head and heart scan are all ok too. Today's she's started being tube fed my milk. We are hoping for progress everyday. But yeah didn't feel right not giving u an update when this forum has supported me through other things and I hope to be posting a 'we are going home picture' soon x

ttcchapter1 · 11/12/2020 23:01

@198435years thank you sharing. Really hoping and praying for you, and that you post that going home picture soon ❤️ please look after yourself during all of this as well.

Grumpy19 · 11/12/2020 23:09

LiG123 · 11/12/2020 23:17

@SharonR88 they should have vitamin d from birth the d drops are brilliant and just a tiny drop on the nipple.

My 2 yr old still has vitamin d with
Cows milk as advised.

Only Time they dont is with formula as it's combined

LiG123 · 11/12/2020 23:21

@198435years thanks for the update (and for thinking of wording it so carefully so as not to scare anyone else!) I’m sure it’s been a stressful few days. Hope you and Eve get to go home soon and that she is going from strength to strength with all the care she’s getting. Take care of yourself too. Sending hugs!

RE Vit D - Pretty sure my midwife mentioned a jab or something that they give - we discussed it and I gave my consent at my 32wk appointment.

PollyOaks · 12/12/2020 02:08

@Grumpy19 I have been the same as you having my position checked since about 28 weeks, they plot the growth on the chart at the same time and heartbeat has been checked at every appointment I've ever had

Just read my notes from today's appointment 35+1 and it says baby is 3/5 engaged 😱 does that mean he could arrive earlier than expected? @pigletpie2177 I'm guessing it's not so true about when they drop the heartburn decreases then 🙈😂

PollyOaks · 12/12/2020 02:17

@198435years congratulations on baby eve being born, she sounds like she is a determined little trooper to come off the ventilator again and is in the best care and she has extra love and attention for her when you do get to take her home. Hope you are feeling as well as can expected and look forward to reading the coming home post xx

PollyOaks · 12/12/2020 02:20

I got given a sample of vitamin d drops in am Emma's diary pack off my midwife today, I read they are only really needed in breast fed babies as formula has all its nutrients and minerals added into it already
@SnookyPook is that the vitamin k jab?

WhoUsedMyName · 12/12/2020 09:32

@198435years thank you for your update. A huge congratulations to you all Thankscan't wait to see a pic sending hugs

Woody096 · 12/12/2020 11:10

Hi ladies, I dropped out for a bit. I am 33 weeks today! I am massive, fundal height is measuring 40 weeks & fluid is still too high & baby is estimated to be about 5 lbs!
I have a meeting with my consultant next week, do you think if I push they will give me a date for induction or c-s. All the mw’s I have seen have they won’t let me go full term. My bump is very hard & painful, feels like a searing pain. Checked by a dr last week whom said it was my stomach muscles tearing 😩 I think if I had a date, I could focus. At the moment all I keep thinking is I can’t go another 7 weeks like this. My first arrived at 37 weeks & second at 38 weeks. Whinging over!

LiG123 · 12/12/2020 11:55

@Woody096 isn't that weight fine though? Mine was 5lb 9 at 34 weeks and 30/40th percentile?

Obviously the fluid is a issue. Are you defo having a section?

A goal would be nice I think with sections they really push for the 38/39 week mark to make sure baby is cooked enough these days.

Induction from 37 they can I've been told.

Make sure you rest up

The weight was from my 30 week scan! The head & stomach are both over 98th percentile too! One consultant said it was fine at the moment but might present problems when baby’s start gaining weight fast in the last few weeks.
I would rather keep baby in as long as possible, but with a date to work towards.
My 4yr & 2yr old have very different views on mummy resting 🤣

MnM156 · 12/12/2020 12:32

@198435years
So happy for you and to learn that baby is gaining strength. Praying for you and your little one. Can't wait to see a going home photo! I am being induced on Thursday for the same reasons as you. Will update you about it as well. For now, I hope you rest and get to take Eve home soon. Lots of love to you!

198435years · 12/12/2020 12:39

@MnM156 The things they've been able to do for her are incredible. Just push for all the monitoring I had and ask about the steroids to support the lungs in a situation of an emergency c-section just to see what your team say. I'm sure it's all the same policies and practices and they obviously know what they are doing but it just niggled me with her lungs needing support and that's the job of steroids with an early c section. But maybe at 36 weeks it isn't an issue. Let us know how you get on and I'm sure it'll be amazing. Even though it's been so emotional and upsetting at times, having your baby makes you so so happy xx

LiG123 · 12/12/2020 12:41

@Woody096 I know the feeling with the extra kids at home. We've made mid day quiet time to get a break lol

WhoUsedMyName · 12/12/2020 14:27

@LiG123 & @Woody096
I've been there done that! I can sympathise a lot a lot. All mine have been two years apart at one stage they were 0,2,4 & 6 😂

Lollipop93 · 12/12/2020 19:52
