Hey ladies just a really quick post as I am hectic to tell you that all was fine at my scan this morning, the baby is measuring about a week ahead and weighs about 3 pounds Sadly, that is all I know as the sonographer was a tone faced cow she ignored DH and my questions, was running 45 mins late but didn?t apologise, refused to show me any of my baby, wouldn?t even show me it?s face, I was nearly in tears, she refused to give me any of the measurements or a report of any sort saying that the consultant can get it all off the system if she wants to at my appointment tomorrow. We were both really upset and angry with her manner but didn?t kick up because at the end of the day, our baby is fine and we are seeing the consultant tomorrow anyway but I was a little tearful earlier, I was so looking forward to seeing my baby?s little face again I know that is not the point of a growth scan but I was so ken to see how it had grown back later for a catch up and a proper chat hope everyone is well

Fantastic Torres !!

torres · 25/10/2007 13:36

oh mrsmc, I am so on your behalf! I would have thought that anyone choosing to work as an antenatal sonographer would by their very nature be compassionate due to the range of emotions they have to deal with. What is it to her to show you your baby yet it is everything to you. Grrr... I am however very glad to hear your LO has grown well.

hotchoc- wow can't believe you are on maternity leave. I too remember you getting your bfp as it was around the time I was lurking on the ttc board after my mc.

Janus- unfortunately theyve modernised nearly every part of UCH other than the maternity unit. I did get excited as the website promises a shiny new unit 'early' 2008 but the midwife laughed and said they weren't even sure it would be ready any time in 2008. If the paint was peeling 7 years ago you can imagine it now! We're thinking of moving too as in a 1 bed flat on the 3rd floor with no lifts (my mum has already predicted I will end up 'beached' on the stairs by the 3rd trimester). Still moving takes time so whether we actually pull it off before May is anyones guess.

EllieG · 25/10/2007 13:38

Congrats on scans torres and Mcspooky! Sorry the sonographer was rubbish MrsMc x

siameez · 25/10/2007 16:20

Great news about the scan torres! And you too MrsMcS though so sorry about the sonographer. I think the point of any scan should be as much to do with keeping the parents happy and secure as with monitoring growth. Parents need to be given confidence right from the start and be encouraged to trust the medical profession and also our stress is surely bad for our babies!! Hope your consultant is better.

I haven't been around much as reading/writing about pregnancy seemed to be bringing the morning sickness on. It finally seems to be lifting now (after 17 weeks!) so am daring to look at the internet again.

In the meantime we got a "high" risk Downs result (1 in 192) which threw us for a bit especially as when we asked for a follow up blood test we were told they wouldn't give us both a nuchal scan and a blood test as it was "confusing" to have two results. Which is clearly utter rubbish. Have therefore stopped singing praises of my hospital and medical profession in general especially after seeing the doctor and having to tell him there were drugs considered safe to take for ms as NHS Direct had told me so - whereupon he GOOGLED it! I have decided to become a doctor as I too am quite good at Googling.

On the plus side I'm fairly sure I can now feel the baby It feels kind of wiggly around the left hand side of my belly today and isn't quite like wind.

Sorry haven't had time to read back very far especially as I think I've missed a birth! Off to read now...

Bouncingturtleskulls · 25/10/2007 16:29

Siameez at Doctor googling! We must all be MDs then
MrsMc - at your sonographer, what a horrible woman! I would compain.

Hi everyone else!
I went to MW, Turtle has had a growth spurt apparently - I'm measuring 34 weeks (I'm 31+4)and she reckons he/she weighs around 3lb. Baby is also confirmed as head down!!!!

MerlinsBeard · 25/10/2007 16:42

MrsMc.... @ ur sonographer!!!

becklespookle · 25/10/2007 16:55

Yay Torres! So pleased all was well at your scan!
Glad your LO growing well too MrsMc! Must be reassuring to know baby is a little big too as I know you said babies were usually small in your family! Very at your sonographer though, can really put you out when they are grumpy or unhelpful with you, my 20 week scan lady was a miserable so-and-so and barely showed me or told me anything. I really think compassion should be a requirement of the job! Hope the consultant tomorrow is better!
Hotchoc, DS2 is getting impatient to meet the baby but DS1 is still acting fairly indifferent about it. I think it is an act though as every now and again he still checks with me that baby is growing well and will not 'disappear' or die now. When I m/c last year we told him that I had made a mistake about being pg but I don't think he ever believed it.
Siameez, glad your morning sickness has passed finally and that you are getting some little wiggles! Sorry to hear of your high Nuchal result though, have you been offered an amnio or other further tests? Will you take them?

MrsMcSpooky · 25/10/2007 17:34

Thanks ladies for all your support

Siameez ? sorry to hear about the high risk score, that must be worrying you what was your nuchal scan? Was it just the scan and no blood test at the same time? We had ours done privately and we got both of these to give a combined result. Have they given you the option of a CVS or amnio or are you going to just wait for the 20 week scan and hope for the best? I think up here, they only recommend looking into it further if you are 1-100. Lovely to be feeling the baby hon

Bouncing ? glad all is well sounds like your baby is growing fabulously! my baby is and has always been head down but still has time and space to move I guess!

Hello everyone

Glimmer · 25/10/2007 18:21

Hi all,

still around and lurking freqently -- just not posting... I am 37+2 today and find it increasingly difficult to work and be pregnant. But I will only have 20 weeks of maternity leave and every day I will take before B-day I won't have afterwards...

But not complaints: healthy and well is the most important thing! Everything seems fine with both LO and me.
No signs of OC or pre-eclamsia and LO is in a okay position, but not optimal (on right side, rather than on left, so there is a considerably higher risk of him turning OP during labor). But hey, I take it how it will come.

All the best to everybody and thanks for the good wishes!

Siameez -- Another option is to ask for a detailed anomnaly scan where they can check for soft markers, which is non-intrusive. And remember 1:192 is less than 0.5% chance, so the rsik is still very low!

MrsMcSpooky · 25/10/2007 18:31

Hey Glimmer I feel for you hon, it must be tough still working. Are you planning to work right up until things happen? I know people who have.

I didn't know that about the optimal position - so it's best if baby is lying on the left side rather than the right? mine is on the left and has been for quite a while now

flosspot · 25/10/2007 18:41

Thanks for the update MrsMc....afraid G43 has had bad news, so have (very gently and with much love)taken her off. I'm sure she'll be back here very soon though. Changed my date too, since last week's scan further along than they thought. Another one tomorrow, so nervous...typical, they give you all these extra things for reassurance and it just makes you more scared. Am also suffering from a complete inability to regulate my temperature. Has this happened to anyone else or I am offcially a freak? And does the worryin stop...eveer?

flosspot · 25/10/2007 18:42

Sorry- posted halfway through!

Sorry about your sonographer MrsMc...mine's a bitch too!

MrsMcS - what a rubbish service....... but glad everything is okay

Flosspot - keep your chin up... and good luck tomorrow

Have developed an unhealthy addiction to roast pork in last week or so.......afraid Egg will come out with a snout and curly tail... think am going slightly mad

siameez · 26/10/2007 00:19

Hi beckle and MrsMcS - yes, we have been offered amnio/CVS but luckily we both immediately felt the same - absolutely no way we would deliberately add an extra miscarriage risk (one was quite enough!) We're also 100% sure we'd keep, love and cherish a baby with Downs one way or another so yes, it's daunting, but I feel very philosophical about it now. I think I came to realise quite quickly that having Downs Syndrome doesn't necessarily prevent a baby being healthy and well and that's all I wished for!

Having said that, Glimmer - thanks for the advice on detailed anomoly scans! I might well look into that.

So sorry to hear about G43

EllieG · 26/10/2007 09:20

Mornin all - glad to hear everyone is Ok.
I had my booking in appt with consultant yesterday and they let me hear the baby heartbeat! Was lovely, cos means is still alive and doing fine. I feel so protective over this little one already, is a bit strange.

MrsMcSpooky · 26/10/2007 10:20

Siameez - my thoughts and feelings were exactly the same I was however glad to have a 20 week scan as they can see soft markers for Downs on those scans and my view was that if the baby did have problems that could be detected early, that would mean that the appropriate care would be available for the baby at birth and that would also give me time to prepare for the situation. Healthy and well hon

EllieG - that's fabulous I am off to my joint haematology/obstetric consultants' clinic now - ideal place for lots of questions but I can't really think of any at the mo

becklespookle · 26/10/2007 12:10

G43

becklespookle · 26/10/2007 12:12

Siameez, FWIW I would have made the same decision as you and for the same reasons. As MrsMc said they can check for soft markers at 20 week scan which will help you to be prepared if you are going to have an extra special baby.

MrsMcSpooky · 26/10/2007 15:55

Can't believe I missed that about G43 thoughts are with you x

torres · 26/10/2007 17:21

g43- I'm so sorry and am thinking of you xx

siameez- shocked by your doctor and his googling! I thought medics tried to steer us clear of self diagnosis by google!! sorry to hear your nuchal results weren't what you hoped for but there seems to have been some great advice posted here. My nuchal scan is next friday and we've decided to take the same approach as you if we are deemed high risk. Is the 'cut-off' for high risk 1 in 200? so your results are not that far off being deemd low risk. Glad to hear you can feel your LO- how lovely!

ellie- that's great about hearing the HB, it all helps to keep positive doesn't it.

Beckle- that is so so sweet about how your DSs view your pregnancy! they sound adorable.

Glimmer- so glad you are in fine health. You must be getting excited now- I am on your behalf!

MrsMc- how did it go with the consultant? hope he was nicer than that sonographer.

Flosspot- my temperature control has failed too- swinging between lying on the sofa in pjs under 3 blankets with a hot water bottle to flinging open the windows and my pjs off as I'm having a hot sweat!

Hello Ladies,

Just to let you know I think some of you may have me confused with a poor lady called Gmakes3 who mc'd. As far as I know my baby is still here so I added myself back onto the list!

Bouncingturtleskulls · 27/10/2007 09:33

Glad to hear you are okay, Goingfor3 - I was a bit confused to be honest!
Went to the Student Ministry Ceilidh last night, lots of fun, one of the students actually asked me to dance, and I had to tell him that I couldn't (far to energetic - lots of jumping up and down probably not good for baby!). Still it was immense fun, loved watching everyone else, though halfway through retired upstairs to the quiet area (where we were serving wine & cheese) to keep our curate company as she was on her own! Had a good chat with her (she is very excited about baby, and has been telling me about when she was pg with her 2 children) and then she and her husband went up to dance. A couple of the students came up to help, but I sent them down and DH and I were fine where we were looking after things. It was a great night!

feedmenow · 27/10/2007 09:42

Oooh, whats all this new look mumsnet about?? Quite confused me actually!

Floss and Mrsmc, happy for you for the good scans. What a bitch though Mrs mc!I would feel inclined to make a complaint just so as she learns a lesson in bedside manner, silly moo!
