@bluemoon2468 no I didn't opt out of anything. This is my first pregnancy, feel so clueless. They did do bloods yesterday in the hospital but no scan :(

Indigogirl88 · 25/03/2020 10:57

@Glitterbug86 oh what's that about bloods are they doing them at the scan now?

Spark27 · 25/03/2020 11:01

I had bloods done at booking in (I think that's to get blood group, test for any diseases, sickle cell, etc). At my scan they took my nuchal reading and then sent me for a blood test (fortunately was really quick as they were so quiet). That was last Thursday and I got my letter with my results today. Fortunately low risk for Down's, Edward's and Patau's. I think they can still test your bloods for the 3, but cant combine with the nuchal reading if you don't have the scan.

BecLJ · 25/03/2020 11:05

Hello, I had my 12 week scan yesterday and went with my husband, expecting him to be turned away but he was allowed in. The hospital was very very quiet and a bit surreal. I also had blood tests etc just after. To everyone waiting for scans I hope they go well and sorry to those who have had them cancelled or partners not allowed in.

We finally told our families yesterday (via Skype / phone) not quite what we imagined a few weeks ago but still lovely to be able to finally share the news!

Glitterbug86 · 25/03/2020 11:11

@Indigogirl88 no I'm in Ireland so things are a little different here, sorry for the confusion! Here, we have an appointment straight away with the GP when confirming pregnancy. And then the booking app and the first scan both take place at 12 weeks. So I had my booking app yesterday, but no scan. I did kick up about them trying to cancel the scan yesterday and basically told the receptionist that she could feedback that I would be attending for both. But when I did show up I was made to feel guilty tbh and that I would be putting myself and baby at risk by having it when I'd had one at 10 weeks.

SkyBlue20 · 25/03/2020 11:22

@LexiM I was saying the same about the bump - we're going to tell friends after the scan and then not see them potentially until we're like 24 weeks, that's a big change! And what if it goes on longer - might just have a child next time we see them 😂 My mum has demanded regular bump pictures when I start popping, bless her.

@Indigogirl88 My scan is 11am, yours? I had booked the day off work and now am feeling like I shouldn't take it off but I think I'm only thinking that as I'll just be at home. We're not busy at all so I will stick with the day off I think, use it to sit in the garden all afternoon 😊

So I'm confused about bloods etc now - I had some taken at my booking appt and he sent it off in three different envelopes to test for different things, so will I not have to do bloods again tomorrow? Or is there a whole different set, too? I was hoping to tell everyone after the scan tomorrow (assuming all is ok) so would be disappointed to have to wait another week until the results came back (though not the end of the world, obviously).

SkyBlue20 · 25/03/2020 11:29

Come to think of it, the midwife did ask if we wanted to screen for certain things (Down's Syndrome, etc), so I'm assuming he did the bloods for that then. It's all so confusing! 🤔

LexiM · 25/03/2020 11:52

@skyblue20 and @Indigogirl88 it’s a weird thought about the bump isn’t it! I am really hoping we will be out and about before baby comes!! I have nothing for it haha. Part of me is glad as I can’t go crazy in the coming weeks buying stuff I probably don’t need. I’ve definitely got a very small bump coming, when I breath in it doesn’t go away like usual.

I must admit whilst my midwife asked about certain tests and explained how they do it, I hadn’t realised it was at the upcoming scan. I don’t feel like I really know what’s going on. I’m sure it’s me rather than her, after all the questions I was probably confused, although she is very approachable so I feel I can ask if I needed to. One thing I don’t get is why they are doing the scan and then bloods at a separate time/place due to CV, surely that’s doubling the amount of contact for all rather than just doing it all on your one visit to the hospital. There is obviously a valid reason for it!

otterbaby · 25/03/2020 11:53

@SkyBlue20 pretty sure the first set of bloods at your booking in appt are just to confirm your blood type and if you're anaemic.

You'll only be tested for the 3 conditions if you opt in for it, at which point they take another set of bloods the same day as your scan. At least in my experience! Then if you're low risk, you get a letter or if you're high risk, you'll get a phone call.

otterbaby · 25/03/2020 11:55

So you'll get your nuchal translucency reading at the scan which is an initial indicator if you'll be high or low risk, but it's not until they combine that info with your age and blood test results that you'll get your final result. X

SkyBlue20 · 25/03/2020 12:11

@LexiM Same here - no real 'bump' but when I breathe in it doesn't go away as it normally would! The start of one I think. I can't wait to get one properly!

Thanks @otterbaby - they definitely did ask us whether we wanted to test for the three conditions and we had to fill out a full form about my ethnic background where I had to tick all that would apply, so they know what to look for (my background is a bit complicated and I'm at higher risk of thalassaemia). I was told I'd get a call if there was anything wrong or I'd get the results at my next appt if not, so I think they possibly have done all of my tests there 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who knows - it's confusing as everything seems to be different in every area and my appt was so chaotic that it wasn't very easy to take everything in. I also don't have my notes yet as the midwife said they'd update them with my blood results and I'd get given them at the next appt. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

So unfocused today, I've done no work at all. Would like to just be lazing in the garden, it looks glorious out there!

This is an interesting and informative read:

bluemoon2468 · 25/03/2020 12:34

@Glitterbug86 without the scan they can't look at the nuchal translucency which gives you the best prediction of genetic abnormalities (combined with a blood test). If you want that check I'd get on the phone to them to rebook your appointment if I were you - you can only have it done between 11 and 14 weeks so it's time sensitive.

Zaalfruit · 25/03/2020 12:35

@CouscousEvaporator signed and sent out to everyone x omg it goes completely against what the govt has advised .

Glitterbug86 · 25/03/2020 14:12

@bluemoon2468 they completely refused to scan me at the hospital yesterday so don't think it's a matter of just calling to rebook it unfortunately 🙁 But I'm looking into getting a private scan done instead now. I feel really uneasy about not having had it

Treaclepie19 · 25/03/2020 14:25

@Glitterbug86 is it because you're in Ireland then? They don't do the nuchal in Ireland do they?

Zaalfruit · 25/03/2020 14:34

A little worried had my scan and they are making me wait . Also how big should the baby be at 12 weeks .

otterbaby · 25/03/2020 14:43

They're making you wait for what? A consultant? Google/my app says crl at 12 weeks should be about 53-57mm?

SkyBlue20 · 25/03/2020 14:46

I'm not sure @ZaalFruit but sending you a virtual handhold, let us know how you get on 💕

Quiffy · 25/03/2020 14:57

@zaalfruit Virtual handhold here too

Spark27 · 25/03/2020 15:00

No idea @Zaalfruit, send lots of good wishes xx

Glitterbug86 · 25/03/2020 15:03

@Treaclepie19 I was thinking maybe it's different here yeah, but I'm really not sure. This is all very new to me! I have however just booked a private scan for Saturday myself as it just wasn't sitting right with me not having it at all. They said they do check nuchal fold as part of it.

@zaalfruit hopefully it's nothing to worry about. Sending you positive thoughts ❤️

BntTowers · 25/03/2020 15:06

@CouscousEvaporator signed and tweeted.

How has everyone's scans gone? I don't have a date yet, getting so impatient for it!

My skin seems to be ok, I was getting loads of spots on my chin when I first found out but they seem to have gone now. May also be that I've not put on makeup for over a week now, not that I use to wear a lot every day anyway. My hair is awful at the moment it's managing to be really dry and greasy at the same time? When does the glow hit? I feel like it's going to be a waste to be inside all the time.

I feel like all my neighbours aren't really understanding the lockdown. There's flats opposite and I regularly see extra people there, today next door had his girlfriend over, she doesn't live with him. A little worrying that people in my immediate area seem to be ignoring the social distancing thing. I'm still just staying away from everyone. I know that soon mil and mum are going to be wanting bump photos. I am feeling a bit round already and think I'm going to end up being massive!

Indigogirl88 · 25/03/2020 15:25

We're all clearly struggling today @ you all!

I've been trying to distract myself looking at maternity clothes but dp reckons no point as I'll be inside for 12 weeks so just wear his clothes! This was my impressed face 😠 hes also not as bothered as I am about not being at the scan, which is slightly irritating me argh!
@SkyBlue20 mines at 9.30 I havent got my notes yet either, dont suppose you're in south yorkshire are you haha would make sense! I'm hoping they'll give me my notes soon. Dreaming of having a better garden now to sit out in

Virtual hand hold as well @Zaalfruit

SkyBlue20 · 25/03/2020 15:33

@Indigogirl88 Not South Yorkshire but not too far either - Manchester. 9:30 is a great time for your scan, no waiting around! I'm not too bothered by 11, just glad it's not 5pm or something. Ignore your husband and do all the shopping you want - we all feel gross enough without having to wear clothes you don't like, too!
