So, I need some help / positivity, according to my last menstrual bleed (15th Jan was my first day), I'm apparently 11 weeks, but I paid for a private scan on Saturday and after much searching (the gestational sac looked empty at first, she had to press hard and up) she seen a yolk sac but foetus was positioned difficulty. The sonographer said that it looks like I'm around 6 weeks pregnant not 10, and that it is showing a pregnancy is happening and they'd like to check again in 1 week. Could she actually be right? Or could this be a silent miscarriage? I've had no bleeding, my nausea has settled the past few days but my breasts are still tender. I've got my nhs scan due then on April 11th as well. Can my dates be that much off or does it sound like the yolk sac and foetus stopped early on?
She did say dates are wrong all the time, but I'm just thinking the worst

It is possible that you ovulated a lot later than you expected. How long are your cycles normally? Pregnancy dating using LMP is done based on a woman having a 28 day cycle and ovulating on day 14. It's incredibly common not to ovulate later than that either regularly or as a one off

VenusStarr · 02/04/2019 16:01

I am in the exact same situation. My lmp was on 29 January. I had some light bleeding on 12 March and had a scan at epu on 15 March where I was told the sac was empty, looked like it had a bleed and was collapsing and told to prepare for the worst. They asked me to go back in 2 weeks for a follow up scan. Went last Friday and they found a 5 week pregnancy sac, with a foetal pole and a yolk sac. They were convinced its a new pregnancy even though I hadn't had a bleed / miscarriage. I've been scouring the Internet trying to find similar experiences and it's mixed. I've had some brown spotting again today so convinced it's all over.

I'm going back next Wednesday, have you got another scan booked? Sending good wishes, this is the worst thing I've had to deal with. My emotions have been up and down and I'm not coping well. How are you? Flowers

HappyGoGoLucky · 02/04/2019 16:02

Most likely late ovulation. A friend of mine went for her twelve week scan but it only showed that she was ten weeks so she had to go back in a fortnights time to be re scanned. They also told her most likely she ovulated late.

VenusStarr · 02/04/2019 16:02

Forgot to say, had a positive test on 23 February, with a 3+ digital first week of March. When did you get your positive?

Bambamber · 02/04/2019 16:14

*incredibly common to ovulate later

Help1983uk · 02/04/2019 16:20

It's all so worrying isn't it. One minute I'm fine next minute I'm in tears. I've got my 2nd private scan on Saturday. So I tested positive on February 26th, I did 4 tests in total, 1 of who whuch was a clear blue digital, which said 3+, so nothing much adds up. I'm trying hard to stay positive. @VenusStarr did you have a transvaginal scan done? I've got my nhs one booked for the 11th, so hopefully I'll be able to have that done then, as the ptivate one only does external

@Bambamber I have no idea about my cycle, I came of my pill mid - end of December after being on it for 13-14 years, so I literally have no idea. I had 1 period in January and then became pregnant

WannabeCountryBumpkin · 02/04/2019 16:25

Hey @Help1983uk

It does happen, my last period started on January 25th, (which would make me 9 weeks i think) yet my scan on Friday only saw the gestational sac with no yolk sac yet. This would make me only 4-5 weeks.
I guess sometimes ovulation is really late and then a period is missed not due to pregnancy, who knows!! Although the date from the scan does mean that the digital stick i weed on is correct, telling me i am 2-3 weeks (since conception).

@VenusStarr Sorry to hear your story, try to be positive, if your seeing that kind of detail on the scan, that sounds like a very positive thing! Try not to worry :) sending you both good thoughts!

Help1983uk · 02/04/2019 16:32

@WannabeCountryBumpkin that's so reassuring to read thank you. Like I've read they're 2 weeks off sometimes, but as mine was 4 weeks out it's sent me into panic mode. That accompanied with the lack of sickness and not feeling tired anymore Confused

I’ve read a lot of these threads on here - my first pregnancy went exactly the same as this - and unfortunately it wasn’t good news for me, but equally I have read lots of people for whom it turned out fine and was late ovulation etc. I don’t think you’ll know until the next scan but I have my fingers crossed for you x

WannabeCountryBumpkin · 02/04/2019 16:45

@Help1983uk Just try to stay positive, Im in the same boat as you! just waiting for the upcoming scan in 2 weeks to hopefully see a heartbeat!
Im sure it will all turn our fine, and try not to stress :)

Bambamber · 02/04/2019 16:50

If you've only just come off the pill it is certainly highly possible that you ovulated later in your cycle.

Slightly different but I had a miscarriage beginning of January and got pregnant again without a period in between. The miscarriage is dated as cycle day 1 so by LMP I would be dated as around 12 weeks. An early scan has confirmed I'm only 7 weeks, purely because I ovulated really late in the cycle

Help1983uk · 02/04/2019 17:04

@WannabeCountryBumpkin will do, thank you. Positivity all the way! Keep me updated on your scan Smile
@Bambamber sorry to hear about your miscarriage, that's great that you fell pregnant again so quickly! Yeah I'm hoping that I just ovulated really late. Time will tell I guess

VenusStarr · 02/04/2019 17:07

I think the fact you've only had external scans could be a factor @Help1983uk, my first scan they said they could see the pregnancy sac but needed to do a transvaginal scan for measurements. Same last week, had abdominal first then TV. They can't find my original sac so think I absorbed it. But if this 5wk pregnancy is new that means I conceived when my digital test showed 3+wks. Its so confusing. I'm really hoping that this can work out. Having a rough day today, just been crying lots 😢 I think it's the tests throwing me, it just doesn't seem possible to have ovulated late. Really hope that you get some positive news.

Thank you @WannabeCountryBumpkin, keeping my fingers crossed for us all. Will you let us know how your scan goes? Will be thinking of you.

PrayingandHoping · 02/04/2019 17:11

I agree with PP. if there's a possibility that you aren't as far along as u thought could u book your next scan somewhere they will do an internal? It will be more accurate from my experience

LJS8987 · 02/04/2019 19:01

If the baby was difficult to find it may be that the measurements were off- I went for a scan and they took a few that were all different!
You also need to remember that things are so tiny it's difficult to get an accurate measurement- that's why the nhs scan at 12 weeks....try and stay positive xx

Help1983uk · 02/04/2019 19:36

@LJS8987 I should've waiting I know, the eagerness got the better of me. That would be great if that is the case and my 2nd scan shows everything on track.
@PrayingandHoping I've got the nhs on the 11th when they will likely to the internal I presume? My private one on Sat is free as last Saturdays results didn't show or tell me much.
@VenusStarr try to keep as busy as possible, easier said than done I know. Keep me updated on your next scan. Sending you lots of good wishes

Rememberallball · 03/04/2019 00:21

@Help1993uk, just to say; if your scan on the 11th is your dating (12 week) scan then it will be done abdominally not internally.

cardboard33 · 03/04/2019 01:48

@help1983uk I'd be tempted to contact your hospital now and see if they can get you booked in for an earlier scan if you explain you're confused about your dates as you've had an early scan done privately and it's well off the dates you had previously thought. Have you had your booking appointment?

If the one next week is the standard 12 week one then it will be an abdominal one but I had one at 8 weeks on the NHS (which turned out to be 7 weeks as we were a week later on the dates) which was done internally. This scan was done in a separate building to the maternity bit and was in an "early pregnancy" area where they take people that have a series of miscarriages etc.

Alicewond · 03/04/2019 01:52

So sorry OP, I hope it is a miscalculation. This happened to me and was a missed miscarriage though

Tinekittie2 · 03/04/2019 05:35

You most likely ovulated late, especially after coming off the pill. Think my cycles were 45 days long for a couple of months after the pill. Don't lose hope yet!

You should cancel your 12 week scan appointment as it won't show anything. Can you explain the situation and see if they will offer you an early reassurance scan? That would be internal and likely in a different area of the hospital. The 12-week scan is not internal.

Best of luck, OP! Let us know how the scan on Sat goes Flowers

PrayingandHoping · 03/04/2019 07:50

@Help1983uk, have you had the letter for the appointment for your nhs 12 week scan? On mine it says it's abdominal, not internal like @Rememberallball says....

Belynda23 · 03/04/2019 10:25

I think it's possible that you ovulated later than expected, which happens to all women from time to time. I think if there is a difference between LMP and dating scan, than the EDD will be calculated off the dating scan. Early dating scans are most accurate in predicting EDD and fetal development as all fetus develop at around the same pace during the early stages of pregnancy.

Help1983uk · 03/04/2019 13:13

Yeah I'm clutching on to the hope that I ovulated late. Will see what Saturday brings and take it from there. I've contacted the midwife today, she has basically just told me to keep her updated. But yeah I've double checked the nhs scan and it is external only, so will perhaps look into a private internal if I don't get results after Saturday

OP posts:
VenusStarr · 03/04/2019 13:45

See how Saturday goes @Help1983uk and then maybe contact your GP or maybe the midwife can refer you to epu for an internal scan. I've got my fingers crossed for you.

I've had some dark brown bleeding / spotting since yesterday so am not hopeful that this is going to work out for me. I'll keep you posted though. Hope you're OK today x
