Hi all, so I've only just found out I'm pregnant! 3.5 weeks so still early on but looking for others in the same stages as me. Marginally terrified, apprehensive and anxious but majorly excited for my journey with little bean!

Lots of questions about your health and family history, your dates, previous pregnancies or miscarriages, they ask if you’ve experienced domestic violence Sad
They take bloods & a urine sample, my midwife was lovely.

Laney79 · 16/09/2018 13:19

@donna474 do let us know how it goes! I've got mine a week on weds in Telford. Already warned them I'm petrified of needles and I need the bloods taken first!

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 16/09/2018 14:15

@Laney68 my midwife let me lie down whilst she took bloods, I totally hate it too!

unicornxo · 16/09/2018 16:13

Might seem an amateur question but I've got an awful cold/head cold and cough on my chest. Is there anything at all that I can take?

TheMagicTorch · 16/09/2018 17:00

My midwife was lovely and she asked if I need to lie down for the bloods but it was okay and she was lovely and gently.

@unicornxo I think you can only take paracetamol 😕 what helped me was shuttingthe bathroom door and blasting the shower on hot so it steamed up. Really helped clear mine for a little while x

CrystalBlaze · 16/09/2018 17:45

I'm not keen on needles either. Did it hurt @Themagictorch?

Also suspect I'm a bit anaemic. Completely and utterly wiped out and pale. Nails and fingers pale too. Got another week before I see the midwife so wondering whether I should be raising it with the GP?

TheMagicTorch · 16/09/2018 18:19

@CrystalBlaze I didn't think it hurt, no. I looked away and I felt the needle but it wasn't a pain if that makes sense. I just didn't watch 😂

It might be worth trying the GP if your appointments not for a week and then I don't know how long til you get the results back from the midwife - mine had to send them to the hospital xx

Laney79 · 16/09/2018 18:20

I'm hoping my midwife will be gentle too. First blood test I've had in 20+ years was when I had my miscarriage earlier this year (only other needle I've had as an adult was a jab for a holiday about 5 years ago). Used ametop gel to help numb my skin before I went, headphones in with guns and roses playing loud, my partner holding my head.

Yes I'm that crazy. Petrifies me. It's better with the gel and the music but I get so anxious.

mumof1willbe2 · 16/09/2018 19:03

I never had any bloods taken at my booking appt😕

@unicornxo I am feeling the same. I've rubbed Vick's vapour rub over back chest and throat hoping it helps as my chest is killing me.

donna474 · 16/09/2018 19:32

@Laney79 they be put me down for consultant led in Telford (I'm Shrewsbury based) as have one high risk factor but hoping I may be able to just see a consultant and then go onto the MLU at Telford.

Fingers crossed for you @donna474 - to be honest at the mo most babies locally are being born in Telford either at te MLU or consultant unit because of the probs staffing the other places (and the roof probs in shrewsbury!!).

Idve thought with one risk factor they'd be keen to have you midwife led if poss. I'll be high risk I'm sure (I'm 39, first baby, mom had undiagnosed twins one of which was stillborn, and had a DVT after me) but as I want a C Section im OK with that. The W&C unit is pretty good as hospitals go. Sadly spent a fair bit of time there earlier in the year.

If you don't mind me asking...How long was the booking appt? Did they take more than one vial of blood? Just been reading the screening booklet and can't figure out if they do the blood test for downs/pataus/Edwards at booking or at the 12 week scan. My booking is weds in Telfird X

donna474 · 16/09/2018 19:46

@Laney79 the Shrewsbury ward was depressing today, I was opting for Telford MLU anyway for reassurance to be near consultants if needed. We spent the best part of four months on ward 19 at W&C earlier this year with my stepdaughter so I'm not too bothered if I do have to go to the consultant ward as it's a very nice new building!

@Laney79 my appointment was about 1 hour 15 but the midwife was frustratingly slow with the computer! She took a urine sample and did a dip test then sends off a sample for further testing and then did three vials of blood to cover everything in that booklet except the downs, Edwards and Patau tests as they do those bloods at the dating scan.

Hi congratulations all April Mummys-to-be.
I'm 8+5 and due on the 23rd. Had an early scan at 7 weeks due to cramping and all seemed fine. Can't help but feel anxious but reading through all the comments has helped, knowing I'm not alone so thank you all.

Laney79 · 16/09/2018 20:04

@donna474 thanks-that's really helpful. I know it sounds nuts but I have to prepare myself for any needles and use my numbing gel. You'd think I was 4 rather than nearly 40!

TheMagicTorch · 16/09/2018 20:40

My midwife was like ooh you can't be scared of needles you've got loads of tattoos 😂 very different.
Mine didn't even use a computer it was all on paper! I am down to see a consultant after my 12 week scan as my sisters both had pre-eclampsia.

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 16/09/2018 21:12

I’m due to see consultant too because my twins were pre term at 34weeks but she said that was probably due to lack of room and hopefully I’ll go back to the midwives. I’ve decided I want another c section though, just hope that my scar is as neat next time!

Creasey31 · 17/09/2018 13:40

Had my first appointment with midwife she was lovely! She kept apologising for how long it was! You give blood, urine sample and blow into the machine for carbon monoxide, also blood pressure! Tons of questions on family history. I told her I’m want a c section as 1st go was pretty rough and I had an emergency one as she was lovely about that and has booked me with a consultant to meet with. Just got to wait on scan date now.

Laney79 · 19/09/2018 10:27

I'm leaving this thread. Scan at what shouldve been 8+6. Baby measures 4mm and no blood flow or heartbeat. Second MMC. Heartbroken. Good luck to you all xxx

unicornxo · 19/09/2018 10:59

@Laney79 so sorry 😢 xxx

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 19/09/2018 11:13

Llondbol · 19/09/2018 13:17

Does anyone know of a brand of multi vitamin that doesn't contain vitamin A or folic acid?

Because of family history of diabetes I've been prescribed 5mg folic acid so need to find a different multi vitamin as I've been advised not to take one containing anymore folic acid. Thank you!!
