As it says

I don't understand what is wrong with old fashioned Nanan or nana my mum will be being called Nana.
Mamma to me is the definition of mummy I've told Fiance I'm not happy with this, he said what about Mommar but im not happy with that.

Without sounding cruel and not doing into everything personal at the min I feel as though the whole situation is being monopolised this is my first baby after suffering with infertility and I stand by myself in thinking I've every right to disagree with this and even ask for This not to happen.

Does anyone agree with me ?

It is definitely a regional variation. I am from North Nottinghamshire, but there is a lot of variation even here. My friends mostly had Nanna (Non-Nar) but I and some others had Mamma/Momma (Mom-mar). My mum is becoming Momma when my first DC is born. It is pronounced differently from Mamma as in Mam-ma, which only uses the short a sound. Also, my DC will probably call me mummy, so I don't care. I don't think there's evidence to say OP's Mil is trying to muscle in on OP's territory or reason to justify the venom which some PP have attacked MIL's character. I will say, however, that it is impossible to get on a card!

"She then started differentiating by calling them wee granny & big granny. My mum (wee) thought it was sweet, but mil (obese)wasn't so keen. Shame that as it stuck."
I presume you did everything you could to stop your dd calling her grandmother a name she found upsetting?

I'm not sure whats more unpleasant about this post. The fact your DD is allowed to call her GM an offensive name that you have allowed to stick, or the fact you seem tickled by it enough to post about it. How very deeply unpleasant. Don't worry, what goes around comes around.

Hmm love how it's the MIL that's the BIG Granny! GrinHmm

Mamma is a mother's name, not a grandmother's. I would put your foot down! What about Gamma?

NewImprovedNinja · 04/04/2018 21:27

FFS it's pronounced Mamm arrr, or Nann arr, not Mamm A.
It isn't remotely similar to mum and is a very common pet name for a grandparent where I grew up.

Would you think it ok to complain if your, for example, Geordie MIL calls you 'pet' and you reply that you're not a animal.

I can't believe how unreasonable some posters are on here regarding regional variations of a colloquial name.

OP, what did you DH call his grandma?

Joanna57 · 06/04/2018 11:11

I would assume that MIL has SAID what she wants to be called and Mr written it down and OP has misinterpreted it!!

Bibijayne · 06/04/2018 11:22

Does it really matter what the pronunciation is. If OP isn't comfortable then a different name needs to be picked.
