F***ity f*** f***, is 49 too old for a child?

I never swear but jeez I’m in shock. DH and I never had kids due to my endometriosis and in the end we just gave up...we do however have two beautiful step-children who I class as my own flesh and blood.

Today I found out I am pregnant. Missed my period and knew something was up as it’s like clockwork. Decided take a test just to rule it out and both tests had a big blue line! My DH is away on business and I’ve spent the day in a daze....I’m worried I’m too old and there’ll be a mass of medical complications...please someone tell me this can work out....

Not too old at all. People live longer these days and your child will keep you young. Fantastic news. Really wonderful.

ferntwist · 21/12/2017 13:33

Wonderful news. Enjoy your pregnancy OP Flowers

margaritasbythesea · 21/12/2017 13:38

I know someone who had their first child through IVF at 47 and then twins two years later. They all seem very happy. Congratulations!

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/12/2017 13:57

I think it’s wonderful news, big congratulations OP! What a Christmas gift. I hope DH is on board with it and wish you a healthy, uneventful pregnancy Flowers

Lentilbaby · 21/12/2017 15:14

I am so happy for you OP! Flowers

I work with a lady who has 2 older teenagers and found herself pregnant again at 50. Her daughter is 4 now and happy and healthy. 49 is not too old if this is something you want. Congratulations! xx

lazydog · 26/12/2017 03:10

How are you doing OP? Is your DH home from his business trip?

katelouise1 · 26/12/2017 21:07

My mum had me at 42 with no problems and now I’m pregant with #2 myself lol congratulations xx

Rachkend · 26/12/2017 21:50

Congratulations! Not too old. Im 45 in April and found out im expecting (11 weeks) Big shock but happy! Thought it was early menopause! If you are healthy then go for it.

Partridgeinabeartree · 26/12/2017 21:52

Where is she? 🤔

Salubrious · 27/12/2017 16:58

Phwoar I wasn’t expecting this kind of response. Sorry I’ve not responded, we are abroad at the moment and the wi-fi has been very spotty so haven’t been able to respond. I have told my DH and he was thrilled - phew! Have an appointment booked in with my doctor for next week and will be glad to get that out of the way. We are going to wait until the 12 week mark before we tell anyone else, including my step-children as the risks are just so high. Taking it very easy at the moment with a mocktail.

Congrats OP! My dad was born when his mum was 48, back in the 60s. Classic story - thought she was menopausal and didn't realise for months! It used to happen very often in Ireland (where I'm from) where women would just have children until they couldn't anymore, mostly until their mid-late 40s. If you can conceive you are by definition not too old. Best of luck!

itshappening · 27/12/2017 18:32

My family tree is like that too harriet, only stopped when nature stopped them. Quite funny doing genealogy, it's like you reach 8 kids and then 'oh gosh, and there's another one.....oh, and then two more after that...' Grin.

Congrats OP hope you have a relaxing break.

Usernamegone · 27/12/2017 19:56

It took my parents 8 years to have me (their eldest) and they were both in their late 20’s. My mum died 2 weeks after my 18th birthday and my dad died when I was 32. You can never predict how life will turn out

eastlondoner · 27/12/2017 22:44

Congratulations Smile

Crumbs1 · 27/12/2017 22:57

Excellent news. How lovely but slightly terrifying (I imagine). I am friends with someone who had an unexpected baby at 52. She has never regretted it.
I think ‘change babies’ were far more common a few decades ago because contraception was less reliable and termination was less accepted/harder to get.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 27/12/2017 23:15

Congratulations OP Flowers

I know several people who have had babies in their late 40’s and are very happy, healthy families!

ferntwist · 28/12/2017 09:30

So exciting Salubrious, but very wise to wait until after your 12-week scan to share your happy news.

Baubletrouble43 · 28/12/2017 09:33

Congratulations. Had twins at 42 here with no issues. What a lovely Christmas present! X

Thinking about this, a friend of mine at secondary school must have been either an informal family adoptee or a 'menopause baby', as I remember her mother's 60th birthday party being mentioned when we were first-years.

LuckyHappyMummy123 · 07/01/2018 00:02

How’s everything going OP? Hope all is ok 😊 x

LuckyHappyMummy123 · 12/01/2018 10:43
