@HarryHarry there really isn't a definitive list of essentials as it depends on what you would like and what you can afford. Babies really don't need that much! As long as you have a car seat to get him or her home from the hospital and somewhere safe for it to sleep then everything else can pretty much wait until you get to the point where you think...oh I'd quite like that...or that would be handy right now. A new baby pretty much just eats and sleeps for the first few weeks and they should sleep flat so a bouncer isn't essential to start. We're looking at one to buy after the birth that transforms into a seat that they can use until age 4. A little more money but worth it in the long run. It's from mothercare but I can't remember the name.

You'll be changing that little bum around 12 times a day so a changing mat and stock of first size nappies is a must as well as wipes or cotton wool. I've bought 12 white baby grows, vests, 2 hats, 2 scratch mitts and a blanket bundle as this pretty much covers everything for the immediate period after birth. Obviously if you are bottle feeding you'll needs bottles and steriliser etc. You'll get lots of gifts too I'm sure...even more if you have a baby shower lol so you can see what is left to buy after all that 😊

Hope that helps a little bit x

Slizmon · 01/11/2017 16:27

Haven't bought a thing yet! Good to hear I'm not the only one! Moving house next week so that's taking all the energy I have! Had a mini "meltdown" earlier about being so unprepared practically (and emotionally!!) but really looking forward to hopefully hearing the heartbeat next Wed, and seeing him/her again a month today! Definitely getting a sling when the time comes Smile

ClaireBear1986 · 01/11/2017 16:44

So glad I found this forum, as I'd never even thought about a sling. But seems a great idea.

We still have quite a while to go @Slizmon, so wouldn't worry about feeling unprepared.

I might wait for Xmas/January Sales and see if I can pick any bargains up.

Found out the Lady I am covering at work is returning on 5th March, which is perfect for me as means I can start my maternity then and I have approx 6 weeks before my due date.

Also booked my NCT courses today, after a lot of thought and research. So really looking forward to that as well now.

HarryHarry · 01/11/2017 17:42

Thanks Annamadden that's really helpful x

ScarletSienna · 01/11/2017 19:20

I had a long stretchy for when my DS was newborn then a close Caboo until he was well over 1. Then I had a lillebaby. I will probably get a Tula this time around too. Sling libraries are excellent for really getting a feel of the different types.

TeaAndToast85 · 01/11/2017 20:32

Just booked my NCT course! Over £200! They had better blow my mind for that price. Although I am mainly hoping for mum friends, so I don't go too stir crazy at home during mat leave. Smile

ClaireBear1986 · 02/11/2017 08:51

Wish mine had cost £200 @teaandtoast.
I'm really praying that I haven't wasted my money with the NCT course, but thought I would splurge while I still have an income. Ha.

Mine has cost £384.
That is for the Signature course, a year's membership and The Early Days Course after baby is born.

I will do the NHS course as well, but so far my experience with the NHS has been far from favourable, so not holding out much hope for their courses. You never know, I might be shocked and they might be great!!

DaisyLand · 02/11/2017 09:18

Morning all
I've got a moody mood today, some pain when walking and feeling so tired! I should really go back swimming as i think it'll releave the pain.

I'm not gong to do NCT, saw the price and thought I could do so much with that money! I might attend some Daisy ones. Also most people recommend them for doing friends but my plan is to share the leave with my DH so I'll only have 6 months myself of leave. Out of which planning to go and visit my parents for around 2-3weeks and then also go abroad on holiday (i love travelling) so really that's my maternity leave gone haha. Planning on attending some sling library as well things they arrange, baby massage courses and few more baby related courses so I'm sure I'll make friends then and not at the NCT price (I hope haha)

Also started looking at photography companies, i was given a good quote but not sure I like 100% the newborn pics. Been given another quote 2k! For bump+newborn+sitting+cake smash including all digital pics, might need to tailor that budget hahaah. Going this saturday to a company next to my home, I love their pics so hopefully I get a good deal out of them.

You're lucky. There was a pre-natal course in English here but it was cancelled as they couldn't find enough English speaking pregnant women who wanted to do it so I have to do an online course instead! It's definitely not how I imagined my first pregnancy would be - more or less alone (apart from H) without any resources or help - but other women seem to manage so I should be able to! Let me know if you learn anything useful at NCT Smile

ScarletSienna · 02/11/2017 19:04

Harry, I didn’t do any antenatal courses when I was pregnant with my son and the midwives told me all I needed to know! In fact, they talk you through labour etc whilst you’re in it.

Daisy, I made lots of friends once I had my baby with other mums at groups but actually I found that my time was really full and trying to keep up with too many people was stressful!

emvy · 02/11/2017 19:31

I haven't thought about antenatal courses or anything either! Ahh! I really feel I'm waiting for the 20 week scan before buying or booking anything. It just feels like, if everything is well at that scan, I can fully relax. I doubt that'll be the case but I will start to be more organised then!

I had my 16 week midwife appointment today and we got to hear little one's heartbeat. It was just the most wonderful sound and hugely reassuring! I'm being referred to consultant led care due to low bmi as a formality. My midwife isn't worried and says she knows I'm just naturally slim but that it's what they have to do if it falls below a certain point. If only they could see what I eat in a day... 😂 On the plus side, it does mean a couple of extra scans later on which will be nice!

Bez9087 · 02/11/2017 21:18

Hi ladies hope we are all well?
@emvy that’s good about your midwife appointment going well. I guess it’s precaution them referring you but always handy to have a few more scans 😊
We had our 16 week appointment today all went well heard both babies heartbeats. We then had our reassurance scan this afternoon. Could see both babies wiggling about their feet kicking away (at each other 🙈) one of them even turned onto their back to look up was really amazing too see. We also got a sneak peak inbetween both babies legs and they are pretty sure they are both girls 🎀 one had legs all wiggling so could get a good look and the other one had their bum upright again clear view 😂 she said to confirm at anomaly scan but she’s pretty certain they are both girls. My daughter cried with happiness bless her she’s been adamant she wanted a sister and was hoping one was a girl so to get them both girls she was just so emotional was really cute.
Hope all you ladies are keeping well xx

HarryHarry · 03/11/2017 00:06

ScarletSienna Thanks for the reassurance Smile

Bez9087 Good to hear your scan went well and congratulations on your twin girls!

ScarletSienna · 03/11/2017 10:56

Just had 16 week appointment too. Weird to think that I won’t see the midwife now until 28 weeks. Anomaly scan is 1st December-already nervous as know too many people who had bad news at theirs. Consultant appointment in the middle of December so hoping these will make the time pass quickly!

DaisyLand · 04/11/2017 14:03

congrats on your girls bez!

Hello! Just found this thread. I'm due with DD1 in April 2018. So thrilled it's a girl as already have DS1 who is 2.3.

amysaurus87 · 07/11/2017 11:02

Hi all...not been on for a few days! Had my 16 week midwife appointment last week and got to hear heartbeat again which was lovely.

Anyone else developed like a blotchy red rash on their face? It's not super obvious but enough that I can notice it. I know it's pretty normal for skin to freak out in pregnancy but just wanted to see if anyone else had had this and what they used to shift it!

Pumpkinma · 07/11/2017 11:04

Hi everyone, this is my first post and one of my first times on mumsnet

I'm 18+2 today due April 8th with first baby. Been having a rough time of it. Really bad sickness and nausea not really been able to keep much down.

Anybody else struggling with being sick and working? I'm so tired and my job keeps me on my feet all day - trying my best to feel like me but all I really feel like is a tired sad blob - Hormones are fun!

Bez9087 · 07/11/2017 11:15

Thanks @daisyland
@amysauraus I read about the “mask” you can get in pregnancy? My cheeks look more flushed but I keep getting hot really quickly. Like on school run yesterday everyone had hats scarves etc I had my coat on with tahirt underneath and coat unzipped as was so warm 🙈
Hope everyone is feeling well. Are we all counting down days till our next scans?
Welcome @pumpkinma @vannanabannana
@vannana I’m having girls this time too. We have a dd and ds already.
@pumpkin sorry your still feeling so rubbish 😣 I tried those sickness bands for a while and I thought they helped but only for a week or two. Hopefully it will settle soon.

ClaireBear1986 · 07/11/2017 11:16

Welcome and Congrats @VananaBanana and @Pumpkinma :)

I am 16w 5d now, and still feeling quite sick and very tired. Keep waiting for this glow and sudden burst of energy that everyone told me I would get at 16 weeks but no sign so far.
Fingers crossed that it could be just round the corner.

Found out last night that I am having a little boy.

Pumpkinma · 07/11/2017 11:22

Thanks @Bez9087 and @ClaireBear1986 I'm hoping it passes too and I also get this glow I've heard so much about 😂

Congrats on finding out what your little bundles of joy are going to be, my BF really wanted to keep it a surprise till birth I wasn't pleased at the time but have come round to the idea of a surprise now, although my 20 week scan is on the 20th so I wonder if I'll still think a surprise is a good idea then 😂

Bez9087 · 07/11/2017 11:29

@clairebear how cute a little boy! Are you excited? Now the name debate starts 🙈
Me and oh said would only talk about names once we knew and now we know it’s girls we can’t figure out one name let alone two 😂
Good job we have some time to think 🙈

DaisyLand · 07/11/2017 11:37

Congrats Claire! Seems like we're having a similar pregnancy story :)
I announced this weekend to friends and family what we're having! It was a disaster as didnt realise that balloons had to have helium to stay up so they kept falling

I've got around 10 names of boy names, tho i've got clearly two fav ones so need to make sure DH likes them but specially he can pronounce them as they're not britsh names.

Bez9087 · 07/11/2017 11:38

Super cute announcement @daisyland

ClaireBear1986 · 07/11/2017 11:50

Thanks all :)

That's so funny @DaisyLand, but such a cute pic!!

We are telling our parents this week as they do not even know we are having a bay yet, so will be nice to say he instead of it, when we tell them.

I am excited but being a boy has caused me some stress in regards to naming him.
I've always had a list of the top 5 names that I would like and was happy to compromise and fine a name we both liked, but my DP is adamant that he wants the baby named after him and I can't see him budging. He says it means so much to him, but I just can't bear it.

I don't like the idea of naming children after yourself (and my DP is named after his father) but worse of all is that my DP has a horrific name.

I feel quite stressed out about it all and don't know what to do.

Would it be unreasonable on my side to say we have his name as a middle name and then choose a 1st name together that we both like?
