hey another newbie! hello paperdoll and congrats on the pg. i live in g'go but work in e'burgh - not far from leith walk!
not sure if you have been on another thread and mentionned being worried but glad you are here. you might not have much of a bump as yet - just wait!! i suppose gmm, vio and I have went through the fears of the early days together and the worries of only 1 scan (god - it all seems so long ago now!).

midnight express - which hospital r u at? the count down is well and truly on for you! hope u r getting the chance to rest u ppletny but as you say - the other wee one has different ideas!

weeonion · 10/01/2007 17:37

oh yeah - GMM - cheeky young upstart! my age is merely a sign of growing wisdom (+ wrinkles, liver spots, impateice, memory loss!!!!!!!! {grin}) just u wait madam- it will come to you as well and then this ole crone will be laughing loudly and even more elderly!

midnightexpress · 10/01/2007 18:26

old schmold - you're a bunch of whippersnappers - I'm 40!!! Still looks funny when I write it. Can't quite believe it.

I paid for nuchal scans for both pgs (on account of fact I'm approaching pension) and it really put my mind at rest. Both came back low risk, so decided against amnios. We decided there's always going to be some risk - it's the nature of pregnancy really I think, but as reassuured as we could be.

As for 20 week scan - I'm in Glasgow, where we don't get one, but if you're concerned, stamp your feet and they'll probably give you one - I didn't with ds1, but did with current pg and they were quite happy to give it to me. Again, being ancient probably helped (and I expect bursting into tears in the midwife's room prob helped too - long story), but I do think that it's easy to feel a bit powerless, and it turns out that you can insist and they do listen.

midnightexpress · 10/01/2007 18:29

sorry weeonion - missed your question there - I'm at the Southern.

mears · 10/01/2007 18:33

Is Ayrshire the only unit that does routine 20 week scans in Scotland?

liath · 10/01/2007 19:26

Paperdoll, I'm in Edinburgh too and 26 weeks.

At the moment you only get a booking scan at 12 weeks BUT the 20 weeks scan is being introduced - I don't know when I think it's supposed to be this year.

There's no nuchal scan so you'd have to go private for that.

I had my extra scan at Health Care Now on Stafford St - I didn't bother with the nuchal but had a private 20 week scan. I'm very glad I did - I was planning a homebirth and the scan showed a congenital bowel problem which if not picked up could have led to the baby getting very sick in the first few hoiurs after birth. As it is, he'll probably need surgery - the thought that I could have had him at home, totally unprepared is just awful.

If it wasn't the case that these scans are being introduced in Lothian I'd have kicked up such a stink.....

Loulee · 10/01/2007 20:22

Hi all! I've just found this thread too. I'm 11 weeks - so due about the same time as you paperdoll. Are the rest of you much further on?

Have you joined the due in august thread paperdoll? It's pretty busy, so often hard to keep track of people!

I do have a wee bump - but this will be my 3rd - so I guess my tummy's just bulging because it's been stretched so much before!

I'm in Glasgow, - no scan date yet - expect it will come through the post over the next few weeks. Can't wait - will really put my mind at rest. I'm 37 so have been given the option of the nuchal scan + other tests, but have chosen not to. Confusing, all these different rules....

suzi2 · 10/01/2007 20:36

I keep forgetting about threads that vanish off my "threads I'm on "list...

Congrats Lolli! Congrats on your pregnancy too Twiga.

LKJ - I have the buzz for DS and like it. I'm not sure I would make exactly the same choice if I could do it all again, but it was certainly ideal when he was younger and I'm using it for the new baby too. Planning on using a sling for the baby or DS as required . Never got into them with DS when he was a baby but really think it's the way forward this time. DS likes the ring sling already.

Mears - you get a routine 20 wk anomoly scan in Fife.

Well I'm 35 wks, measuring 39+... protein in wee, bp high. BUT I have the cold and awful asthma and cough with it so probably why I'm a bit run down. Got some oral steroids which are helping things and also helping my pregnancy discoid eczema that the hospital had given up treating lol. MW doesn't reckon the size is a problem... though I have a dreadful vision of having a 12 lber in the birth pool at home!

Been on the gaviscon since about 3 months and so far it hasn't been quite so bad as it was with DS. But still enough to need it several times a day. I grew to love the aniseed one with DS eventually... agree about the heart attack thing - I had osophagael spasm from the heartburn with DS which was terrifying! I can recommend Rennies fruit tablets. not as effective but really tasty (like refreshers) and more convenient for taking out and about. Don't know if you can get them on prescription though - haven't thought to ask.

weeonion · 10/01/2007 21:17

hey folks - good evening to you all. hi to yet another newbie loulee and another weegie! r u at SG, Qm or PR?

vio- had another mw appt today. she is a dote - really really lovely.spent well over an hour with me. feel alot better and clued into what is on offer. asked about the antenatal classes. we should get word when we are about 30 weeks - wont start til we are around 32 / 34 weeks. i have booked for teh evening one so dp can go as well. is david able to make yr afternoon ones? i have to go see physio next week about wonky hips- a bit too much movement there apparently!

some people seemed to have dropped of fthis thread and the old one - hope we havent lost them!

geordiemacminx · 10/01/2007 22:06

Hey ladies, welcome to all the newbies... make sure you stay with us!!!

Mears - there are a couple of health authorities that offer 20 week scans but I think they are few and far between, its supposed to be changing but when that will be is anyone's guess.. under-resourced and under-funded..

suis · 11/01/2007 03:05

mears - you get a second scan at Stirling Royal too, though no offer of nuchal or anything fancy.

suzi2 - You seem to be having a rotten time. I can sympathise on being run down. I had to go to bed as soon as I got home tonight, utterly wiped out (though still waking with RLS)and sore in all sorts of odd places. Have you jacked in work yet ? I'm finishing this week and not a moment too soon. I'm measuring big at 35 weeks as well. Also nervous about this. My MIL was pleased to tell me that DP was 9 10 when he was born and has a big head, which cheered me up no end.

suzi2 · 11/01/2007 03:57

Not working (well, not properly!) Suis so that's OK. But DS is tiring enough during the day. Mind you, you would think that I'd be so shattered I couldn't keep awake... but here I am, once again, sitting up all night. 4 hours sleep a night actually seems to be working out for me! Mind you, it's handy to get used to it I guess... lol at your MIL. My MW keeps tellingme that weight doesn't matter, it's head circumference that does! And since DS had a 98th centile head circumference at birth, with no 'moulding' as he didn't engage she keeps telling me I have nothing to worry about! Erm.. yeah right! I have to push a giant headed baby out my lady bits... that's worry enough

Loulee · 11/01/2007 10:05

Hi all!
Wee onion, I'm at QMH - was there for my other 2 and thought they were great. Where are you?

I also had too much movement in my hips with both other pregnancies - second time i did yoga which helped no end. Ist time I wore a corset (didn't do much at all!) The physio at the hosp also did some straightening out.

Funny reading about all you ladies so much further on - it's bringing it all back to me - but still seems so far away - though when i think the word 'July' i do start to have minor panics about 3 little ones running rings round me!

I'm still at the hideous throwing up and exhausted stage - with a few wee windows of normality thrown in to keep me sane!

midnightexpress · 11/01/2007 11:59

Hi Loulee and welcome! Have you discovered the pregnancy yoga class at Balance in the West End? It's great - I've been along with both my pgs and it's just really good to get a bit of head space amidst the mayhem (especially if you already have two I should think!). You can only start at 16 weeks so a bit early for you yet, but you need to book ahead. They also do post-natal yoga for mums and a hilarious mums and babies class (I lasted about 5 weeks as DS not really the type to sit gurgling peacefully while I did a bit of downward dog, it turned out ).

Loulee · 11/01/2007 12:31

Hi Midnightexpress. Yes i went to maureens class for my previous pregnancy - and also (when not pregnant!) go to a normal class there. Have really been missing it and can't wait til I'm a bit further on so I can get some head space as well as exercise. You're right - the break from the two of them is great - though i love them dearly .
i never made it to the post natal mum/baby as timing was wrong for me - heard good things - though also stories of people doing nothing asides from feeding the baby durin the class!

So you've not got long to go - how you feeling?

LieselVentouse · 11/01/2007 13:04

Happy New Year

I have been looking for this thread for ages. Can I have a poll please. I had DD in QMH and this time I thought I would also get a choice of hospital but as Im high risk I dont, can you tellme your thoughts on QMH please.

TIA
xxx

Vio · 11/01/2007 14:40

hi everyone and all newbies.

WO- yes, i phoned them and they told me that we should hear from them later. yes, we all went through the fears of the early days together and the worries of only 1 scan....it seems sooo long ago now!!!

Keep thinking only less than 4 months to go till our babies arrive...not long now..

Yes, i think the 20wks scan is worth the money...its quite expensive but as this is my first pregnancy i wasn't sure what to expect so the scan really made me feel happier..i mean, knowing that the pregnancy is going well and baby is fine etc..then knowing i'm expecting a wee boy really put a big smile on my face.

trixymalixy - thank you! i'm going to PRM..im 25wks now.

Start to get stretch marks!! not good.. getting very big and i know i will get even bigger than i am now...

weeonion · 11/01/2007 15:58

liesel - sorry i havent heard anything about QM. attending the princess royal.

midnightexpress · 11/01/2007 17:57

Hi Loulee

I went to Maureen's general yoga in (brief) space between pgs too, so we've probably spotted each other around the place! And yes, I was one of those mums who spent most of the class feeding the baby, but a nice space to do it in, I suppose.

No, not long to go now. yikes. A bit knackered, as have reached that only-sleep-on-your-side stage now and DS inclined to get up at ungodly hour in the morning, but all good practice for what's coming, I dare say...otherwise fine. How about you?

Liesel - I'm at SGH, so can't say anything from my experience about QMH. But I know quite a few people who've been there and no bad stories. I've actually heard more bad things about the Royal than any of the other Glasgow hospitals, but also many fine - depends so much on your individual experience I'm sure.

weeonion · 11/01/2007 19:15

oh dear.... poor ole vio and me are at the princess royal.

Loulee · 11/01/2007 19:27

Sure it can't be that bad wee onion, though I'd always choose qmh - may be rather shabby round the edges but the people are lovely and bf support great. - and this is coming from someone who had 2 sections, loads of interventions - everything the opposite to my optimistic birthplan - I felt 100% supported throughout though and not pressured - when I requested extra time at each stage it was always granted.
hope that helps Liesel. Did you not have such a positive experience? Why don't you want to go back?

How funny about the yoga, midnightexpress - guess it's a small world esp. Glasgow w/end. I'm feeling pretty rotten still - and still up during the night with dd2 - so sympathise with the early starts - I know what it's like - my 2 are sleeping til 8 at the moment which would be fab if it weren't for dd2's frequent night wakings!

Vio · 12/01/2007 01:22

hi, got a stupid question to ask.. what is a Top & Tail bowl for by the way?

geordiemacminx · 12/01/2007 08:44

Its if your baby doesnt need a full bath you fill a top and tail bowl with some warm water and use cotton wool to bathe the baby... particulary the top.. i.e face and tail.. well you get the idea.. personally I cant see the need for an actual "bowl" when a tupperware bowl or something you have in the kitchen has just the same function..

geordiemacminx · 12/01/2007 09:48

Btw ladies... just recieved my "swaddling wraps" from freedom slings... honest opinion.. DONT BOTHER.. They arent "wraps" they are flannelette (sp) sheets...ok but not fantastic quality, come with no instructions on how to actually swaddle the baby.. despite stating on website that instructions are printed on the wrap...

Have sent an email to them, stating my concerns.. will await their response..

You know what I am fucking sick of being ripped off and taken for a fool!!! Sorry - rant over.
