oh frig!!!! i just ordered and bought them too! ah well - live and learn. i agree - i have had some bum deals off late of the net.

On a brighter note - went to boots in sauchiehall street yesterday - got cotbed stuff - 2 blankets, 2 fitted sheets and 2 flat sheets - all for £10 in the sale. also got emma jane nursing bras at £2.

how u doing babe?

geordiemacminx · 12/01/2007 10:36

They are ok as blankets go, and will probably come in handy... its just when they tell you that they are one thing and clearly they arent it gets right on my nerves!! Still I have sent a snot-o-gram email to them telling them exactly what I think!!!

I'm fine, mam coming up tonight, so we going shopping for moses basket, baby bath and stuff tomorrow which should be nice, hopefully the weather will cheer up a bit.. Hopefully got nct classes sorted out too, weekend course in East Kilbride which isnt far from us... Billy slightly bemused at why we have to be there from 10-4.30 for 2 days mind but thats blokes for you!!!

Little man is wriggling around loads more now, although he seems to have a quiet day then a busy day which freaks me out a little bit!!!

Hows things with you?

Loulee · 12/01/2007 10:44

I'd never heard of swaddling wraps - I'd get the midwives / nursery nurses (is that what they're called the ones that help you bath the baby?) at the hospital to show you. When I was in QMH, a lovely lady helped me bath my dd and then wrapped/swaddled her so perfectly - just with a wee hospital blanket. I could never do it quite so well mind.....

weeonion · 12/01/2007 10:47

where u heading for baby stuff?? boots do have a good sale on with baby stuff. depends if you want it all to match i guess. hope u have a lovely time with her. xo

our nct classes are coming up as well but we are doing the 8 evenings thing. i keep winding frase up about them - that nudity is required etc etc! poor bugger is getting back pain, tummy cramps and swollen ankles! cant wait for labour day to see what he produces!!

things up and down but trying to get on with it.

just realsied you will be finished end feb, me at the beginning mar. chance for some meet ups?

geordiemacminx · 12/01/2007 10:56

Gonna go up to mothercare at ek, mamas and papas at the fort and possibly the pram centre too, depends on weather/time/traffic, whether we end up killing each other... we get on very well but not shopping.. I remember when I was younger and we used to clothes shopping and I swear she used to pick minging stuff up on purpose and then when I told her so she would say that I was saying it was minging just to spite her.. ahhh happy days!!!

Not sure whether I would prefer the 8 weeks or weekend. Weekends are a bit thin on the ground at the moment, got a friends engagement party in newcastle in 2 weeks and then off to barcelona in feb... we will get the nuirsery started sometime.. on the plus side I have managed to sell the spare bed and am in the process of selling bunk beds on ebay... so at least we will have some space..

Meet up? You bet!!! I am gonna make you drive over here though!!! And we'll be able to go over and see anjo and get some practice on her baby!!

I think we all have up and downs babe, so dont worry. I am frequently bursting into tears for absolutely no reason whatsoever.. of course moods arent helped when ripped off from crappy websites!!!! And breathe.....

geordiemacminx · 12/01/2007 11:05

Ha... in response to my email... I GOT MY MONEY BACK.... feel a bit guilty now...

weeonion · 12/01/2007 11:08

consumer warrior that you are!
will wait and see what mine are like before getting on the case.

midnightexpress · 12/01/2007 13:23

Sorry weeonion, didn't mean to alarm you re Princess Royal - I'm sure it's fine. Just a couple of quite particular deliveries that were problematic, and at least one of them not because of staff. And as I say, i know plenty of people who've been there with no problems at all. Also, I think they do mobile epidurals there, which you can't get at SGH (not sure about QM)so if you're planning on pain relief that might be an option for you.

And re swaddling, when I had DS, the midwives in the hospital showed me how to do it too, so just ask when you're in (they'll probably offer anyway). And I'd agree, just a normal baby blanket is absolutely fine for it - no need for anything fancy. It really helped settle DS down for the first few weeks (though he was having none of it after that, and insisted on sleeping on his belly as soon as he could roll over (about 3 months)- they never mention what the baby might have to say about it in all the stuff about SIDS, do they?).

Vio · 12/01/2007 17:59

hi everyone, WO glad that you have bought some baby stuff.. i love baby stuff but i am trying not to spend so much cos alot of them are just not v.practical.

GMM-glad that you've got your money back.

WO and I are going to PRM ..not really know what to expect..hopefully it will be a smooth and short labour for us.

Err..horrible weather really..hopefually the weather will be better tomorrow.

Just wondering how Anjos doing,...her due date is approaching..!! Hope shes doing well.

Vio · 12/01/2007 18:05

i am going to boots tomorrow anyway cos i have a contact lens aftercare appointment tomrrow so i guess i will check out their cotbed stuff.

trixymalixy · 13/01/2007 12:20

Was on the PRM tour on Thurs night, which has really freaked me out!! can't believe that I'll have a baby in 3 weeks max!!

The midwife unit looks quite good although you can't actually give birth in the birthing pool. Can you believe that?!?

They make you get out when you are fully dilated and have a hoist to lift you out if you refuse!!!

WO I also managed to get nursing bras from Boots for £2 each, couldn't believe what a bargain they were!!

GMM thanks for the info on the swaddling blankets, I'll just keep the one I have. It's really sweet, can't believe how small it is!! It's got a flap which opens so you can change them in the middle of the night without unswaddling them and a bit for car seat straps to go through so you don't have to unswaddle them to put them in the car.

mears · 13/01/2007 16:19

I don't understand why women at PRM don't object to being made to get out the pool. It is shocking that waterbirths are not 'allowed' there. Don't think they are allowed at QMH either.
Women cannot be made to leave the pool. To forcibly remove a woman is assault!

Vio · 13/01/2007 16:55

Hi, went to boots, pram centre and babyrus today..

Bought 2 M & P fitted sheets, 2 blankets, a toy bear with a pic frame ( v.cute!) a nappy bin, and a steriliser....cost us £145!!! the steriliser is the most expensive item but its needed so i suppose its better to get a good one.

Thinking of getting the fisher price bath..but not tooo sure..cos not too certain if its as practical as it looks so i am not sure if i should spend the money or just go for a normal bath for now.

midnightexpress · 13/01/2007 18:04

It's the same with the pool at SGH too - apparently it's because the midwives aren't trained to deliver babies in the water. Also, I think there's a risk of cross-infection - they won't let you use it for labour if there's any sign of blood, for example if you have your waters broken (as I did with DS). I've heard that you can deliver in the pool at Paisley, so if you're desperate for a water birth and not too far from there, you could opt for a different hospital.

trixymalixy · 13/01/2007 18:07

Am I right that you are a midwife somewhere in Ayrshire Mears? Do they do waterbirths there?

The midwifes are apparently not trained in waterbirths although they are bringing it in soon. Just another of the many things that will be brought in too late for me, the 20 week scan being the main gripe on this thread!!

I was thinking that i might refuse to get out if I actually manage to get in the one birthing pool!!

suzi2 · 13/01/2007 21:46

I'm planning a homebirth and the community midwives have said I need to get out for delivery... I've written to the Head of Midwifery and it looks like they are 'warming' to the idea and going to get a bit of training. So we'll see. As far as I was aware, waterbirth was pretty 'normal' these days so why offer a pool and then make you get out?

mears · 14/01/2007 12:19

exactly suzi2. In this day and age the 'need training' arguement is appalling. Midwives have been advised for years that they should be supporting women in waterbirth.

In Ayrshire we do have waterbirths in hospital. We also support waterbirth at home. Many community midwives have not seen a waterbirth but they read the literature and we have a training video. I am appalled that PRM has got away with this for so long.

I think one of the reasons is that they allow women to use the pool who have had opiates (pain killer injections). This can affect the babies dive reflex which theoretically could mean that the baby might breathe in water. We advise women that they should not use the pool if they have opiates.

Twiga · 14/01/2007 22:50

Totally forgot about this thread - dropped off ones I'm on list - will put a watch on this time. Hope all keeping well!

Mears they do 20 wk scans at Aberdeen Matty and Cresswell Matty, Dumfries - full anomally check donr at both.

Out of curiosity, how many of the hospitals still tell you the sex at 20wk scan if asked? Lot seem to have changed in the last 18 months or so. Had dd in Aberdeen and they told with her but no longer do. Currently in Dumfries and they will tell. Seem to have changed policy at Stirling and hospitals in Glasgow/Edinburgh from what I hear.

Twiga · 14/01/2007 22:58

vio, was just quickly reading down and I wouldn't bother with a baby bath at all. We used the big bath and one of these for dd and worked great bath support . Baby baths are cute, but not in them for long, can be heavy to lift and empty etc. Up to you really but thought I'd add my tuppence worth .

suzi2 · 14/01/2007 23:01

Twiga - I'd agree about the baby bath. I hated bathing DS until I started taking him in with me for a short dunk! Meant I got a wash each night too which was needed during those early months of not managing to fit in a shower lol. I still bath with him every night as he won't go in alone... but that's not so much of a problem.

Fife (well, Dunfermlin QM anyway) still tell you the sex. Though with DS they had various posters up in the waiting area with "please ask at the start of your scan if you want to know" and lots of pictures of scans and girl/boy bits. But this time around there is nothing. I asked the sonographer anyway and she told me. But I'm not sure if the policy in general has changed to discourage people from asking?

Twiga · 14/01/2007 23:02

Also meant to add that a bath support means you've got both hands free for washing which feels easier than trying to hold a slippery newborn one handed esp if your first and all new. Not suitable once can roll-over etc.

Can you tell I'm a fan?

Twiga · 14/01/2007 23:04

Hi Suzi, nice to see you. How you all keeping? You're due soon aren't you?

Twiga · 14/01/2007 23:08

On a scan front, they state in leaflet for here - Dumfries - to ask during scan if want to know otherwise they don't vol the info. Wander if policy change at the various hospitals is because of potetial litigation if wrong? In aberdeen they were careful to phrase it as "we think it's a ..." rather than giving a def 100% answer and warned that they can get wrong.

suis · 15/01/2007 05:26

I can confirm that Stirling now won't tell you the sex. There are signs up all over the place telling you not to even bother asking... not that we wanted to know anyway.. but I did hear a rumour that it's because someone tried to sue having been told the wrong thing.

suzi2 · 15/01/2007 10:14

I have heard that in certain areas, people of a certain religion/belief/ethnicity (can't remember what... sorry totally ignorant on these things!) were having late abortions if it wasn't a boy to carry on the family line? Not sure if that's a myth or not. Probably a myth actually.
