Here we go ladies... anyone north of the border with a bump feel free to join...

I'll second the Gaviscon cool tabs, they don't taste too nasty and I pop one in my mouth at night and let it dissolve while I am (trying to be) sleeping, and it seems to keep things calm for a while.

As for feeling huge... I'm only 5ft 2 (DP is 6ft 3 with a big head - gulp) and my bump has gone all out in front and made me look like a weeble (if you can remember them) People have been asking if it's twins, if I should still be at work etc etc for sometime now. I grew out of my maternity work trousers at about week 25 and 2 pairs of maternity jeans at about week 32. I'm now getting by on DP's tops and 2 remaining pairs of mat trousers that are very very stretchy and in a huge size.

As for weight, I broke my own no-weighing-it'll-only-be bad-news rule the other day and discovered I've put on over 3 stone. OMG OMG I'm never going to get it all back off supposing I give birth to a whale and breastfeed till it's at secondary school.

trixymalixy · 05/01/2007 22:33

Hate to tell you this tallulah, but it only gets worse!! I'm 37+5 and had heartburn so bad one night I thought I was having a heart attack, was nearly about to get DH to drive me to A&E!!!

The gaviscon liquid is vile, i thought there was no way I'd finish the huge bottle I got from the GP, but it's the thing that has worked best for me so have asked for a repeat prescription today.

the gaviscon double action tablets are pretty good too.

agree with the height thing, I'm 5ft 8 and everyone keeps telling me I have a neat bump as well. Got weighed today and have put on just over 2 stone .

LOL think my DH has started nesting, I was thrown out of the lounge today as he wanted to hoover and I was getting in the way sitting in the middle of the floor on my birthing ball!!!

geordiemacminx · 08/01/2007 13:54

Hey ladies... just thought I would bump this up the topics a bit since we all seem to have been pretty quiet over the weekend!!

Hope you all had a good one, mines was quiet, had a nice time along a parkhead, just a shame I couldnt havetaken advantage of the free bar!!

Have ordered a couple of swaddling blankets from freedomslings up at cumbernauld.. £12.50 for 2 as opposed to some other places £17 each!!!

Vio · 08/01/2007 14:04

hi all! went to the pram centre on Sat. bought a few items..a baby monitor..2 sleeping bags..a moses basket..absolutely love the basket cos its a good buy..it comes with a free stand as well!!

cant wait till march cos my mum will be flying over!

geordiemacminx · 08/01/2007 14:48

Vio - can I ask how much the moses basket was? My mum is coming up at the weekend and we are hoping to get one, was thinking about just going to mamas and papas and mothercare but if they have some good bargins I might be tempted to go into the pram centre even though it is a bit of a trek from here!!

trixymalixy · 08/01/2007 18:31

Hi guys, hope everyone is well.

GMM, wish I'd seen this swaddling blankets before i paid £14 for one from Blooming marvellous!! I might just buy a couple of those as well as I'm sure they will get puked on at some point!!

Went to Mothercare to have a look in their sale today. Really wasn't worth the effort!!

geordiemacminx · 08/01/2007 20:28

Hey trixy... the website seemed a bit "hippyish"... but hopefully the blankets will be ok... not keen on the sling things mind you no matter how much some people rave about them!!

next has some nice baby clothes reduced?

trixymalixy · 08/01/2007 21:13

The blankets look really nice.

I'm not that keen on the hippy type slings either. They look especially silly on the blokes!

My SIL has lent me one of those type and my other SIL has lent me a clip on one from Mothercare and I bought a wilkinet from ebay so drowning in slings!! So at least i can try them all out!

Might have a look in Next, I normally avoid it like the plague at this time of year as everyone seems to go at bit nuts over the sale IYKWIM!!

weeonion · 09/01/2007 10:31

hey folks - morning to you.
GMM - i was in toysrus at the weekend. good sale on and moses baskets were good - from about 20 quid up?

will check out those swaddling blankets you got. did you get them online?

geordiemacminx · 09/01/2007 10:36

Hey you...yep, www.freedomslings.co.uk or something..

Havent got them yet so not sure whether they are great or not but at £12 I'm sure they will be fine!!

Anjo1 · 09/01/2007 13:06

hey everyone!
GMM just checked out those swaddling blankets , great idea. have to agree with you on the slings though, just a wee bit on the too hippy side!
feeling rotten today , looks like my sicknes is going back to being a regular thing , been sick a couple of times a week over the past couple of weeks and this week so far i've been sick after getting up two days in a row - which is so rubbish !! if i hear anyone else talking about it being a first trimester thing , I think i'll strangle them !!!ah the joys of pregnancy eh ?!
anyone else been through this ?

lazyemma · 09/01/2007 13:14

I bought a "freedom pouch" from that site - like the sling, but without all the extra material. I think they look ace, and I've heard v. good things about both the pouches and slings from (not remotely hippy) friends with children. They might not look super-chic but I don't think that should be a major factor anyway, and hopefully it'll prove to be a useful purchase.

geordiemacminx · 09/01/2007 14:11

Hey Anjo... could be a sign that things are moving along

I just had midwife appointment, nothing much exciting, but at least it was an hour off work!!!

Emma... didnt mean to cause any offence. Sorry

lazyemma · 09/01/2007 14:23

no worries geordie - no offence taken: I was just sticking up for the sling!

Vio · 09/01/2007 15:53

hi everyone! GMM- we paid £44.99 for the moses basket cos we wanted one with extra paddinG & it feels quite sturdy too, got an extra moses basket bedding for free so we thought thats great then when we paid the staff said you will a M & P stand for free as well...thats even better!!...we thought its a good buy.

WO-i've signed up for some classes , ie. afternoon antenatal classes for women having their first baby , i think it starts after 28 weeks , haven't heard anything yet. have you?

By the way, anyone know how many birth partners can you have? i think both my hushand & my mum want to be there.

trixymalixy · 09/01/2007 21:44

Vio, are you going to the princess royal? I can't remember.

I asked how many people you could take in with you at my ante-natal class as I would like my Mum and Dh to be there. They said that would be fine, but to let my midwife know so she could put it in my notes. they weren't keen on any more than 2 people being there with you and also said that one might be asked to leave at certain points if they needed to bring extra doctors or midwives in.

sounds like you got a bargain with your mose basket!

weeonion · 09/01/2007 23:00

hi vio - good to hear from you. i have also signed up for the antenatal classes but aint heard a squeak back. i have an appt with dr duncan 2morro so will ask then. we have our NCT ones starting on the 30th for 8 weeks over in the west end so a bit more reassured. hope you are well. xo

geordiemacminx · 10/01/2007 11:57

Banana... saw Cathy yesterday, at last!!! Have got a breast feeding workshop and a parenting class, both in Bellshill, cant remember the dates, but if you havent booked yours maybe you could try and get on the same one if you want?

midnightexpress · 10/01/2007 12:22

Hi there

I'm yet another sassenach living in Glasgow - can I join the thread? DC2 due in about 10 days, at SGH.

re slings - I've heard good things about the wilkinet. We had a mothercare one for DS1, and it was ok, but apparently the wilkinet is dead comfortable to wear.

One piece of advice for 1st timers stil swithering over buggies - TRY not to get pregnant again when DS1 is only 5 months old(...) - our super-dooper travel system has now had to be replaced by hideously expensive double as DS1 is only 14 months old and not too steady on his pins yet. If, for some reason (insanity?) you are planning to have two close together, I'd recommend the Phil and Ted's 3 wheeler - you can use it as a (really great)single and then buy a separate seat to add on with number 2.

weeonion · 10/01/2007 12:29

hi midnight express - welcome!! love the name by the way!

geordiemacminx · 10/01/2007 13:57

Welcome midnight!!!

Very at you being due in 10 days!!!

I'm over in uddingston, having my little boy at wishaw general hopfully a few weeks BEFORE my due date on 1/05/07.

midnightexpress · 10/01/2007 15:37

Thanks weeonion - name came about as result of having hideous bf problems with DS1. All safely in the past now. Breastfeeding advice from mw was to express after every feed, including all the middle of the night ones. Not quite sure when I was supposed to fit any sleep into the regime...

And don't be too envious geordiemacminx - I am size of large hippo, insomniac with 14 month old who has had the genius idea that getting up at 5am is a really great idea. But secretly looking forward to it now that it's getting close.

paperdoll · 10/01/2007 15:47

Hi - I've just found this thread, thought I would join up though I think most of you are further along! I'm 9 weeks tomorrow & this is my first time so no bump yet. Live in Edinburgh (Leith) with dp and have not really done very much to prepare for motherhood so far, apart from lots of sleeping.

geordiemacminx · 10/01/2007 15:58

Hey paperdoll - glad you found us.

Re scans.. over in lanarkshire and in Glasgow you only get one.. at 12/13/14 weeks depending on how unefficent the hospital is.. I dont think you will get a nuchal scan over there.. dont think any of us do in scotland.. I chose not to have one, at 24 I didnt think the risk woul be that great, had a triple blood test performed by my midwife which came as low risk. WO had one, cos she's ancient at 34?, and I think it reassured her a lot. The thing worth remember is that no matter which test if any you go for, they cannot tell you that you baby will have downs or any of the other syndroms that they test for. All they can give you is a ratio.. so you could be 1:2000, which is very low risk but still have a baby with downs syndrom, or you could be given a 1:2 and have no problems at all.

Also you wont get a 20 week scan in edinburgh either I dont think.. I paid to have a private one done at babyscanning which is in Livvy. Cost £150, but was well worth it, more to see the little one and find out we were having a boy. By this point there would have had to be something seriously wrong for us to even consider having a termination.

Anyways enough of my ramblings, all of the above is my opinion only, I'm sure everyone else has their own views.

paperdoll · 10/01/2007 16:08

Thanks gmm, for replying to my questions from that other thread ... will have to find out more about nuchal scans and all the surrounding issues, I guess. I may not need one anyway, though I am a bit more ancient than you (32) so I suppose I should just do some reading up.
It is a bit annoying though, that there are so many variations in treatment between different parts of the country. confusing - bleugh. oh well - at least we have health care, luckier than some!
