loulee - what the heck is the blue book??

Loulee · 31/01/2007 20:22

sorry WO, meant to say at the end of that post - it must just be if you're at QMH, you get given a blue book at your booking appointment + they fill it in with all your details - then each subsequent appointment with gp / mw / hospital they write up your notes in it + you keep it til the end of your pregnancy. I guess you have similar at PRM?

weeonion · 31/01/2007 21:25

aaaaaaaaaah - you get a blue book - we get a white card with basic info. they must put all the jucy info in our files then!!

weeonion · 01/02/2007 16:13

anjo - you doind ok?? any news?

TALLULAHBELLE · 01/02/2007 22:23

Phoned Maryhill H/C to make appt. They told me to call team at Q Mum's for referral. Of course got answer machine there. AAARGH, am 22 weeks and don't have bloody midwife yet . Home visits would be brill. Wonder if will be offered if ever get into loop?!

Glad someone else asked about NCT. Been wondering.Like sound of tea parties and sales! Maybe missed the boat on those too.

Well, at least I do have a blue book so am relieved that something's in order..

Loulee · 02/02/2007 14:05

I know how frustrating it can be TallulahB - but don't worry, I'm sure when you finally get to see one of the QMH midwives it'll all fit into place. BTW, I've always found them very efficient at getting back to you when you leave a message. I think the only time you can get a real person on that number is before 8.30am as i remember.

And I'm 15 weeks and haven't seen ANYBODY yet! I am on a countdown - only got to wait til Tuesday. Am looking forward to the scan but not to all that hanging about - last time my booking appointment was nearly 3 hours!

Don't think you're too late for NCT groups - i think you just contact your local nct group and towards the end of your pregnancy they put you in touch with people at a similar stage. i never went ahead with it - have friends who have - some have loved it and made great friends, - others have hated it and dreaded having people they don't like round to their house for a cuppa!

TALLULAHBELLE · 02/02/2007 16:30

Cheers Loulee ,

Just got off phone to QMH. Firstly m/w found out my GP hasn't signed up to the community scheme so by rights I should have been having my ante-natal care through own GP - never offered . M/w then told me I had to go back to GP and ask for referral to Maryhill if I wanted community care.
I think I sounded so disheartened that the m/w said she would try and do it for me. At last I have appt at clinic - will be 28 weeks by then FFS but at least I'm finally sorted. She also has arranged parenthood classes at same clinic. Now I just have to arrange all that time off work.

MrsMcJnr · 02/02/2007 17:04

Hello fellow Scotland dwellers! I'm Scottish and live outside Edinburgh. Don't have even the beginnings of a bump yet. I am only a few weeks (4+5 I think). I'm excited and terrified all at once, this is our very precious first baby

What do I need to know?

Looking forward to speaking to you all a lot more. I know Chooster already and recognise a few of the other names

weeonion · 02/02/2007 19:20

mrs mcjnr - welcome to you and congrats on yr news.... this is my first as well but hoofing it along now - 29 weeks. there is a few alot closer to their EDD than that as well - so there shoudl be someone around to ask!

tulla - what a nightmare for you. hopefully you will get it sorted early next week??

anyone any lovely plans for the weekend? dp is away to pub for usual post work pints. i am in the flat - feeling too big to make it through the door. somehow "the weekend starts here" doesnt have the same ring when its for a night of soda water!! roll on a bottle of bubbly in the delivery suite!!

Loulee · 02/02/2007 20:15

tallulah - nearly there, yeah what a nightmare. good reminder for me on tues to specifically ask for community care - my doctors sounds a bit like yours!

hi mrs mcj - welcome + congrats! ~I'm a little further on than you - 14/15 weeks (bad at keeping track). This is no3 for me, so in theory I should know what i need to know, but am not sure you ever really do But if there's anything I can answer, I'd be more than happy

and the weekend, WO, you've got me thinking. DP away at football on sunday so think I'm entitled to some kids free time tomorrow - friends coffees and maybe a little retail therapy. just hope the sickness holds off x

Vio · 03/02/2007 00:59

welcome mrsmcjnr-this is my first as well..im nearly 29 wks now.

WO-got a letter from PRM-class starts on 13Feb. going to local classes in Muirhead...been feeling abit unwell lately..bump is getting too big..its difficult to get comfortable...its nearly 1am now and i am finding it to sleep.

weeonion · 03/02/2007 13:11

hi vio! poor you. have you got hip pain or is it just the size of the bump girth that makes sleeping difficult? did you invest in a body pillow??
i havent heard from prm re the antenatal classes - will have to chase them up. who is yr named midwife down there?

gm - i meant to ask - how was the party last weekend?

Vio · 03/02/2007 14:57

hi all , what a lovely day today!!

WO-well, the big bump is making me uncomfortable , i tried using a pillow but it doesn't work..i think its probably the mattress, i never like our bed too much but Martin loves it...i prefer a firm mattress myself i think when the mattress its not firm enough, it makes the backachne even worse. anyway,... don't really want to tell him that i dont want to sleep next to you , i am going to sleep in the guest bedroom. you know..anyway...i've got itchy skin as well, i tried body butter, baby oil also bought E45 shower wash instead but i still get itchy at night ( don't know why its usually at night though).

Anyway, i can see you are getting all excited about decorating the nursery..have fun!!

How's everyone doing then? when is Anjo's due date? i know its in Feb but i forgot the date.

MrsMcJnr · 03/02/2007 15:55

Thank you WeeOnion Wow 29 weeks! I know what you mean about dry weekends ? last one was my first, very odd! I hope you manage to get rid of the itching soon.

Congratulations on your third Loulee! Thanks for the offer of answering my questions, you might regret that! ahhh you mentioned coffee uggh (at the moment anyway)

Vio that?s great that you and WeeOnion are at the same stage, congratulations! I hope you feel more comfortable soon.

Can I ask you all a question? When did you get your scans and how many did you get? My sister down South seemed to have lots more than friends up here. Thanks

trixymalixy · 03/02/2007 19:14

Hi Mrs McJnr and congrats on your pregnancy.

We pretty much all only got one scan on the NHS at 12 weeks and paid for nuchal and/or 20 week scans privately, which is a disgrace as all the NHS guidelines say that you should get 2 scans. Greater Glasgow health board say they don't have the budget for it. Some of us have written to our MSPs to complain.

Vio · 03/02/2007 19:48

Mrsmcjnr-like trixy said ...we only get 1 scan here..i got my first scan at around 13weeks..am going to PRM...then went private and paid for the detailed scan at around 20weeks. It's a shame that we don't get 2 scans here...

yes, me and Wo are about the same stage , we are going to the same hospital too..hope you're keeping well..

weeonion · 03/02/2007 19:49

mrsmcjnr - trixy has pretty much answered for most of us in glasgow anyhow. there is only one scan offered - the dating one, usually between 12 - 16 weeks. quite a few paid teh couple hundred quid for the nuchal and / or growth scan. other places in scotland seem to be different but i am not sure about west lothian? will u be at edinburgh royal infirmary??

suis · 03/02/2007 20:07

I got 2 scans in Stirling ! But that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I know that ERI is only one, but if you are in West Lothian then you might be St John's instead ? It seems to get a good reputation, but I don't know the scan policy there.

ja9 · 03/02/2007 20:17

hi suis. i'm 37 wks today and in stirling too. when u due?

suis · 04/02/2007 00:19

Ja9 - I'm actually in Alva, and due on Feb 11th ! just a couple of weeks before you. If you're early & I'm late we might just meet up in the labour ward !!

We had our tour in there last week... seems ok as hospitals go, although I wasn't too reassured by being told they were always really busy (we only got to see the labour room they don't really use because everything else was full.) I've also been told that Feb is a busy month, so I can see me giving birth in a broom cupboard at this rate.

Have you been in there yet ? Assuming you are planning hospital rather than home ?

Loulee · 04/02/2007 10:09

Hi all,
Just adding in on the scan front - I'm 37 and in glasgow, so automatically get the 12 week scan and a nuchal scan offered too. You don't get the 20 week scan, but in both my other pregnancies i had at least one or two scans towards the end - various reasons and never a big worry - just the midwife / consultant being cautious.

McJnr - just getting back into the decaf now - a few weeks ago i would've thrown up at the thought!! it has to be weak and watery else I can't drink it - and when i put it like that, it sounds quite disgusting!

ja9 · 04/02/2007 13:44

suis, i gave birth to ds there in aug 2004. had a good, positive experience, but hoping for home birth this time. midwifes go on call for HB on saturday, but i'd gladly give up idea of HB if i could have baby this week - desperate to get it out!

i was 12 days early last time, so our dates really could coincide!

do you have gold team then? i had them last time as was living in t'body. thought they were great!

trixymalixy · 04/02/2007 16:55

Hi guys,

When I was in the PRM, I kept thinking that I wished I had brought such and such and hadn?t brought other things and that I?d need to tell you guys.

So here are my top tips.

Don?t take:
Maternity pads
Nappies
Cotton wool
Nappy sacks
Maternity mats
Breast pads
Blankets
Towels
Hairdryer

My hospital bag was full to bursting with these things and they were all provided. Plus when you are discharged any of the disposable things that are leftover in your locker will be disposed of for hygiene reasons so make sure and take them home with you.

Things I wish I had taken:
Plastic jug (the one in the toilet kept going missing, plus felt it would have been more hygienic to take my own)
More Food (DH/DPs get ignored when it comes to being provided with food, plus I missed tea/toast as was asleep once and was starving)
Phone charger (the bedside phone is expensive, I just drew my screen and used my mobile)
Hair straighteners (I hate all the photos of me in hospital)
Lip balm (lips were chewed to death)

Clothes are provided for LO at the hospital, although it is nicer to have them in your own things, so don?t stress about not taking enough/taking the wrong size.

Take a nightdress as you can pull it up round you so you don?t bleed onto it when in bed, I saw plenty of people walking around with blood stained pjs. I had dark comfy trousers for during the day.

Can?t think of anything else at the moment! HTH!!

MrsMcJnr · 04/02/2007 17:03

Thank you all for posting for me. That?s shocking about only getting one scan around 12 weeks, 12 weeks to 40 weeks is an awfully long time to wonder if everything is going well isn?t it? Where did you go for your private scans? I think we probably will be at St John?s.

All the very best to all those about to drop

trixymalixy · 04/02/2007 17:19

MrsMcJnr,

I had a 20 week anomaly scan at the Nuffield on gt western Rd. It was £200, but well worth it IMHO to put my mind at rest that everything was OK.

Think Ross Hall do scans as well, not sure where ther is in Edinburgh that does scans, but some of the others on this thrad can probably help.

There are other places that do 3D scans that are cheaper, but they are just for seeing what the LO looks like or finding out what sex they are really.
