Poncey Names?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 19:11

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

I think Gretchen is hideous!

Atticus is cool a la mocking bird

Barnaby sounds like a clown (I had a friend with a snake called Barnaby too)

niceglasses · 28/09/2006 19:14

Like Greta, but not sure about Gretchen. Atticus is fab name with all the right connotations!

Cassoulet · 28/09/2006 19:14

Have you read 'the Wonderful O' (James Thurber). It might put you off Ophelia!

Not helpful, sorry.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 28/09/2006 19:14

anniediv · 28/09/2006 19:15

NotABraBurningOtter · 28/09/2006 19:15

niceglasses · 28/09/2006 19:16

i also thought winky winkola was one! Arrgh! I like Greta but Gretchen reminds me of retching (sorry!). Atticus is quite funky, love Elijah (DS is Elijah!), Barnaby is ok but will be shortened to Barny a la big purple american dinosaur. Ophelia is nice, but have you thought about nicknames? Kids at school will shorten it to something...Philly perhaps? Do you like that!?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 19:43

LOL! We'd thought of Retchin' Gretchen but I reckon kids'll always find something to jeer at each other whether it's names or knobbly knees. Then on the other hand, why give them ammo?

Oh it's a tough one. I'm leaning towards Atticus or Ophelia. I know she's the mad one in Hamlet but it's such a pretty name and not very common. Perhaps Hamlet is why it's not common!

I love Elijah, if I have a boy this time round he will be Carter Elijah. I wanted it as a first name but dh thought it might sound like we were copying Elijah Wood, in fact it's a familly name on my side.

I love Ophelia but MB has a point. Not keen on Gretchen though, ugly sounding word imho.

Pollyanna · 28/09/2006 19:49

I don't think any of them pass the supermarket test do they?

I quite like Ophelia, but my dh vetoed any unusual choices. It also depends where you live.

Lockets, I wanted Scout for a girl too but apparently it's the name of a brand of doggy treats!

How poncey are the circles in which you move?

I mean, I went to school with a boy called Hugo which was the height of ponciness for us (although he was lovely), but it is of course not poncey at all in more rarified society.

Anyway, if you like them, you like them.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 28/09/2006 19:53

becs, love-you need to start a special conversation under, say Pregnancy.

Go to "by topic" at the top, and find Pregnancy and "start a new thread" (something like that) and type in what you want to say. And then you should get some lovely replies

ps welcome to mumsnet

I went to school with a boy called Frodo

Beat that.

beckybrastraps · 28/09/2006 19:54

He would have been EATEN at my school!

sorrell · 28/09/2006 19:57

Choose the name you love. I wouldn't recommend asking people what they think, though I know it's lovely to dream of names because they might put you off and you will always regret it. Everyone's tastes are different. There is no right or wrong. These days there are so many 'strange' names that I don't think any child will be teased for having one. They will probably get teased but not for that.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 28/09/2006 20:00

Worryingly, it was not even commented on at mine.
