Poncey Names?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 19:11

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

WinkyWinkola

Atticus is marvellous. Barnaby is acceptable. The combinations of the girls' names are really truly bad, IMO, and I do tend to like outre names. Each one is fine by itself but Gretchen Violet in particular sounds like a rare disease, and when I read Ophelia Pearl to dp his immediate reaction was "porn star"

Sorry, I assume you did want honesty. Haven't read whole thread so hope I am not putting my foot in anything

FrannyandZooey · 28/09/2006 20:54

OOps oh golly have just seen post about "opinions v rudeness"

so sorry if my post was a bit blunt, I was aiming for humour but perhaps achieved only bad manners

I do like all the names you chose in varying degrees but not the combinations of the girls' names, so much

foundintranslation · 28/09/2006 20:57

Atticus is good, Elijah too, not sure about Barnaby. Ophelia is a lovely name but too many connotations IMO. Pearl is interesting but I can't really imagine it on a baby somehow. If you like Gretchen, now about Greta or Margarete? Violet I rather dislike.

foundintranslation · 28/09/2006 20:58

how about

Spidermama · 28/09/2006 20:58

WinkyWinkola I like all your names. I love Pearl but I always think it sounds better in some accents than in others and I couldn't say it well.

My children have unusual names. We just chose the names we love and went with it. We weren't trying to be different or awkward, but people do feel they are entitled to be rude none the less. Even family. It can be really upsetting, especially when they've already been named.

I think you have to ignore the prejudices of others and go with your heart. I asked freinds of mine with unusual names how they felt about it and they were very positive on the whole.

My name is very common and often I'll phone a friend and say 'Hi it's Spidermama' and she'll say, 'Oh, which Spidermama. Sorry but I know about four Spidermamas'

Everyone remembers my boys names and the most important thing is to give them the love, security and confidence to carry them off.

x

How about Ruby instead of Pearl? I like Ruby

FrannyandZooey · 28/09/2006 20:59

Spider I am catching your habit of posting without reading thread first

it is a really bad idea isn't it?

Miaou · 28/09/2006 21:00

Spidey I would love to know your dc's names but I appreciate you don't want to share on here!

SoMuchToBits · 28/09/2006 21:11

Atticus is OK, and Elijah not bad, but wouldn't go for Barnaby.

Also hate Gretchen and Violet, not keen on Ophelia, but like Pearl, probably because I have a very nice friend with that name.

Astrophe · 28/09/2006 21:14

I can understand why you post, and I like these threads and think they ae intetesting and perhaps will yeild a lovely name for our number 3 (in a few years!) I just read the OP to DH (cause I thought it was hilarious as it seemed like 'WinkyWinkola' was one of your options) and he said..."ohh, Atticus...now thats cool"

I posted on here before we had DS and people were rude about my options too Winky!

Peridot30 · 28/09/2006 21:14

HI i like elijah but prefer Gretel for a girl. like Ruby too. Was bit worried bout Winkywinkola till realised ur name!! LOL

Astrophe · 28/09/2006 21:15

LOL - can't believe anybody knows three people called Spidermama!

Astrophe · 28/09/2006 21:17

oh crikey...just had a thought as we all sit here laughing about 'winky winkola'...its not your first child's name is it?

Katymac · 28/09/2006 21:19

I don't usually comment on these threads but I think Gretchen Violet is awfully close to gentian Violet which is a dangerous chemical.
here click on crystal violet

I quite like both names (love Violet) but would worry about the combination

Blondilocks · 28/09/2006 21:22

I like the name Violet

sweetkitty · 28/09/2006 21:24

Elijah - like
Ophelia is OK depends where you live and where the child would be going to school I reckon, up here she was probably be picked on by all the Britnee-Jades, Aimee-Leighs and Demi-Morgyns!

Tommy · 28/09/2006 21:46

I think Atticus is cool.
Elijah I like too although perhaps a bit "trendy" IYSWIM
Ophelia is nice but I wouldn't choose it myself as I do think it is a bit poncey
Gretchen I don't like at all I'm afraid

largeginandtonic · 28/09/2006 21:57

I love the names, Atticus is def my fave. Ive just made my baby name list and am torn. I have a hugo who someone mentioned earlier in the thread, i suppose it is a bit poncey, we are not! I thought it was cool, he gets called hugs which is very funny cos he is massive. I have visions of being a rugby player still called hugs
I love Jemima (mimi) and Dorothy (dora, dotty, dolly) Agatha (aggie) Matilda. Boys are harder, i have 4 already am running out of names, Arthur (artie) Linus, Rupert, and Jaspar (spurs)
Poncey or not?

largeginandtonic · 28/09/2006 21:58

Forgot to say love Violet but we called the rabbit violet!

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 29/09/2006 07:29

I do see that some of the combinations of names are unfortunate. Hmmm

But I still like them.

I love old witchy names though

And pls bear in mind that I wanted dd to be...

Helga

(She's not, though)

comebacksummer · 29/09/2006 08:04

hi...
Choose whatever, just work out the initials and say it over and over again with the surname as at degree ceremonies etc people will read the whole thing out.. knew a family called the Hills who called their lovely daughter Eve......... Eve Hill, say it.... poor sod
LOVING Atticus btw...and Scout come to think of it! if I ever do fall preggers again (trying...) then I might bear those in mind if you don't mind!!
Btw also, I know a mum with a Cordelia and they call her " Cordy"...not so sure

comebacksummer · 29/09/2006 08:11

Oh and I love "witchy" names too.. LOVED enid but dh wasn't having any of it..

Twiglett · 29/09/2006 08:18

My personal opinion which has no bearing at all

Atticus is quite cool .. but you can't shorten it and it seems to be trying too much to be cool IYSWIM

Elijah is a nice name ... very old testament .. I like old testament names they feel strong and simple (obviously not the unusual ones)

Barnaby is a bear with a song and a friend called Becky ... and quite soft

Ophelia is a cruel name for a girl ... suicidal madwoman

Pearl .. very blue rinse

Gretchen is ok but I don't love it

Violet .. "You're turning violet violet" Willy Wonka

comebacksummer · 29/09/2006 08:19

"i'm Barnaby, I'm Becky, off to see the world..." that programme is dreadful!

Twiglett · 29/09/2006 08:24

it is isn't it?

OK story about my mother (she's quite famously mad)

My mother found out from my sister the name we were planning to use for DD. She called me up, 4 times, to specifically tell me how much she disliked the name. And then called me up again to tell me she'd just been watching a nature programme and a baby moose had been born and they'd just called it by the name we'd chosen for DD

I was slightly upset, then realised she'd had 4 chances to name childen and this was our child.

Needless to say we gave DD the name we loved and she couldn't be anything else now (at 2.5) .. although she is known by nickname and not name .. never had any problems naming DS at all
