Poncey Names?

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

I really like the boys' names. Atticus somehow goes better with Elijah imho than Barnaby does.

I'd be a bit reluctant to call any dd of mine Ophelia, because I think people's comments on it would be a PITA for her.

Gretchen is lovely. But I'm not sure that Violet goes v well with it (I do like names to 'match' ).

Joolstoo · 29/09/2006 08:35

deffo NOT winkywinkola

Atticus is sure to be up for a bit of ribbing imho
Elijan is nice though
Ophelia is nice
Gretchen sounds 'wretched' to me

sorry

I don't think second names have a bearing really.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 29/09/2006 08:40

I love Elijah and all those El names (El is "god" in Hebrew, btw...)

am gutted cos they don't go with our surname.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 29/09/2006 08:42

the thing is, I have an old lady's name. or I did. its uber-fashionab;e now, of course. but when I was growing up, it was deffo an old lady's name.

I never got ribbed for it. Never. Not even on the council estate on which I grew up. Though that was inner London.

Not at school either. though see comment below re Frodo.

FoghornLeghorn · 29/09/2006 08:46

I like Elijah

I had this the other day - everyone bar Nutcracker thinks our choice of girls name is a bit ........ can't think of the best word to use but not many people were in favour.
We still like it though so just go for what you and DH honestly prefer.

harpsichordcarrier · 29/09/2006 08:58

is it Ethel

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 29/09/2006 09:05

worryingly close....

norkmaiden · 29/09/2006 09:05

Enid?
Edna?

hulababy · 29/09/2006 09:06

Edith maybe?

TerrbileTwos · 29/09/2006 09:19

when i announced at 6 months pg that my chosen names where
Killian Christopher for a boy
Amelia Rose Claire for a girl

my entire family went followed by then by the time ds was born everyone was used to the name and he actually looked like a killian so the name fit......

And i love the name Atticus (To kill a mocking bird is one of my favourite books) but i wouldn't have the balls to call my kid it.....

Fimbo · 29/09/2006 09:34

Wasn't Ethel from Eastenders called Gretchen in rl? My mil is called Violet and hates it with a passion especially as some people shorten it to Vi.

NotABraBurningOtter · 29/09/2006 09:39

gretchen is so sweet

SSSandy · 29/09/2006 09:41

Thought for a minute winky winkola was your third choice! Phew

Ophelia is nice, Gretchen sounds awful to me because this "chen" diminutive in Germany is like you're saying "Little Greta" which I wouldn't like on a grown-up at all.

Nothing wrong with Barnaby. Not wild about it but I can't fault it. Why Atticus? Not keen on the sound, is there some other reason why it appeals to you?

Elibean · 29/09/2006 09:42

I like Elijah....my dd is Elia, which is the feminine form (in France).

Not keen on Ophelia (but she will probably get called Fifi at school!) but love Pearl...

Astrophe · 29/09/2006 12:02

There are books in Australia by May Gibbs (she is to Aust what Beatrix Potter is to the UK) and one of them is called "The story of little Obelia", and its very sweet.

So if you like the sound of Ophelia, but worried about the conotations, maybe you could go with Obelia instead? Could even be shorted to Billy, which is think would be quite cute and funky on a little girl.

Piffle · 29/09/2006 12:04

I know a Barnany he is called Barney and he is COOL
Love Ophelia Pearl also like Cordelia aka Delia

Astrophe · 29/09/2006 12:07

here is a not very good pic of Little Obelia living under the sea in her oyster shell!

Spidermama · 29/09/2006 15:30

I notice winkywinkola hasn't been on this thread since her post at 8.46 in which she was clearly hurt by some of the responses.

Shame. Poor Winky. She missed all the later supportive comments.

People do seem to feel free to be as rude as they like about the choices of names others make.

Winky is probably a relative newbie and I hope this hasn't put her off.

Gretchen is my favourite, its lovely.

becs21 · 29/09/2006 16:42

if im having a girl i will call her tilly

motherinferior · 29/09/2006 16:46

I really, really like Atticus Elijah.

Not sure about the other names.

If you do call her Ophelia please teach her to swim.

motherinferior · 29/09/2006 16:48

But then I really like poncey names. I still feel faintly guilty for having given DD2 a relatively non-ponce first name, although admittedly her middle names and two surnames up the ponce factor considerably. A name isn't really a name in the Inferiority Complex if other people can spell it easily
