Poncey Names?

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

I would have been very upset if I'd told someone what names I liked and been told they were 'horrible'. I probably would have cried!

jennifersofia · 28/09/2006 20:16

I like Elijah, but not Barnaby or Atticus (Barnaby reminds me too much of Barnaby bear, and Atticus just sounds a little silly)
I love the name Ophelia, but wouldn't chose it personally due to Shakespearian connotations. I like Pearl on its own, and I like Gretchen, except for the unfortunate rhyming possibilities. Do you like Cecila?
It is hard, good luck.

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 20:18

Oh no, Sorrell, don't bother with crying!

I'd probably think their own names and children's names are probably vile too. Although I have to say, I'd probably be a touch more diplomatic! LOL.

Ophelia, lovely though it is, will make your child the subject of endless limericks and seaside postcard jokes, don't do it.

anniediv · 28/09/2006 20:18

Think you should seriously consider Winky Winkola, it has a ring to it!

i honestly think scout is vile. One in the park today with a Coco sister not keen at all trying too too hard

buktus · 28/09/2006 20:22

what did you call your first

anniediv · 28/09/2006 20:23

I don't tell people the names we have chosen until the baby is born. Much harder for them to be rude if the name is already attached to a person!

If you like the name, go for it, you will never find something that is unique, can't have the p*ss taken out of it or that everyone likes.

ohhhhhhhh Lockets i am so sorry i only read half the thread that was stupid of me......your daughters names are really beautiful......please forgive me

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 20:27

I'm not going to say what I called my first child because he's a person (if you see what I mean!) and any toxic comments about his name would actually cheese me off!

well I don't suppose you post on here asking for opinions if you want people to lie to you.

I can't understand the obsession people have with getting unusual names. If you want unusual go for Barry and Wendy

fwiw I actually like Barnaby and Ophelia, but dh wouldn't even enter into a discussion about these names, and I think he was probably right. What about Martha? (dh vetoed that one too...).

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 20:29

Yes but there's opinions and there's, how shall we say, rudeness! I asked for opinions but not rudeness.

Martha - nice name but our old cat was called Martha.

Gretchen reminds me of an old witch - sorry.

Not keen on other names either but each to their own thats what I say - my two have very boring and common names but I am happy with them.

fattiemumma · 28/09/2006 20:34

any name is capable of being used for mockery so just go with what you like.

personaly i think Ophelia is a beautifull name.

When i was naming dd i refused to tell anyone what i intended to call her because every time i came up with a name i liked i would be told about someone horrid with that name.

when i finally decided i kept it secret till it was too late for them to come up with nasty stories.

so i have a George and an Eleanor.
and i dont care who'se dog is called George or if there was a mean girl at school called Eleanor.

crazydazy · 28/09/2006 20:37

Thats right Fattiemumma - I loved the names Liam and Lucy but DP wouldn't have either of those because he had worked with people with both these names and so didn't like them.

Was very fed up.

I also loved Tallulah and he wasn't having that either.

I am very glad that I picked my kids names bfeore I became a teacher

While I'll agree that any name can ge 'got at'. Some are just asking for trouble.

EG if your surname is Ball, avoid Ophelia.

Avoid Abishag, unless you have a damn good reason to use it.

Pollyanna · 28/09/2006 20:40

I agree, just don't discuss the names and present it once the baby is born as a fait accompli. I was unable to forget people's comments when I made the mistake of discussing names and there's no name which people will agree on. Anyway, my dh vetoed anything vaguely unusual.

Perhaps if you choose an unusual name you should give the baby a more usual middle name in case they rebel when they're older?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 20:46

I guess people post these threads in the hope of discussing something that is dear to them. Also, perhaps new names and ideas would get thrown up which is always interesting.

LIke I said, there's a difference between honesty and rudeness.

at the thread title

I actually don't mind Gretchen too much, prefer Greta.

Ophelia - lovely (though may get shortened to Philly?)

Barnaby - also like it. There is a boy at the library called Barnaby (and I never thought to connect it with the dino character!)

Elijah - yep like that too.

There is also a boy at the library called Herbie. He can carry it off but I bet not many can!

(I like poncey names too - dd2 is called Eilish - pretty unusual)
