Poncey Names?

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

Poppy, If we have another DS he will prob be Alfie (Alfred) William. My DS is Elijah James (but obviously a Biblical name). Any help?

Elibean · 05/10/2006 14:46

poppy, lol, love the names our LOs come up with. Though Mohammed and Virgil are probably more acceptable than Yup Yup Prison or Aliboo

Elibean · 05/10/2006 14:46

Astrophe, will pass your post on to dh - he who standeth in my way on every name I like

Astrophe · 05/10/2006 14:48

Poppy, how about Sean or Angus or Ethan or Joe (Joseph if you DP would allow it)?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/10/2006 15:04

Elibean - how about Sylvia or Sylvie? It would work well in both French and English.

Hi, I have just been enjoying reading this thread in fact was laughing so much at one point a neighbour who came to the door, thought that I was crying, I couldn't speak to say everything was OK!!! Brilliant!! Obviously wasn't laughing at the suggestions - just the misfortunate ones... My mum went to school with someone called Teresa Green.....

Anyway, for what its worth, I think as long as you and DH are happy with the names you have chosen who cares what anyone else thinks?? We kept our names secret for both DD and DS mainly due to superstition but partly because we didn't want the "oh really" (hmm) response... Like someone has already said (sorry I forget who) as long as it goes with the surname and you like it.... Enjoy!!!

My MIL often reminds me that there was a mad Uncle in her family who now has the same name as our DS... (we didn't know at the time) and lovingly says I hope your DS doesn't turn out so mad...!! (shock)

anyway, good luck chosing - how exciting!

If you don't like the name you could always change it within the year. Named my DS with parental pressure a most ordinary boring name that I hated. When people asked his name when pushing around supermarkets etc., would make up outlandish sounding names rather than give normal dull one. Then, answer to prayers, found out that if you want to change name within the year of child's birth you can do so complete with new birth certificate. One happy camper here ...[smiley]

donlouq · 05/10/2006 20:38

I quite like the boys names - although Barnaby is a name for a big brown cuddly bear - not a child!!

I'm not kee on your girls names, Gretchen - witchy!

My wee girl is called Fern. It suits her. My son is called Jack.

Iwork in a nursery and names are a constant source of amusement!!

I've had a wee girl called Harley Davidson, the sisters Poppy and Scarlett (perhaps a red theme going on here), also had Hughbert, known as Bertie, lots of Reubens on the go right now, with a few Oscars and Ivans thrown in for good measure. Hamish is another real Scottish name!

As for the girls, theres DanaLee, Roxi, Cady, Roma and my favourite of all Isabella-Wilimena Rose Marie!!!

Take your pick!!

moudlesmum · 05/10/2006 20:44

I went to school with Dyansittishafeynawattibintimohammed Sharhi - I promise, straight up! We called her Shaf for short though!!!!!

Elbian - can't think why I hadn't thought of Yup Yup Prison - must suggest it to DP.
Astrophe - Thanks for suggestions - I'm from NZ and Angus reminds me too much of cows. I did come up with Fergus which I really liked but DP helpfully says it is one of the worst names he has heard - sigh. Friends have Sean and Joseph - I like Joseph and Elijah but of course too biblical. Funnily, and completely illogically, DP is most keen on Daniel!! - a name I wanted for DS1 but have now (funnily and completely illogically) gone off.... DP thinks we should just call the poor boy "baby"!!!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 06/10/2006 09:40

Tulips - I'd love to kow what you changed your DS's name for.

One of the more outlandish names I know of is Huckleberry, he's about 4 now.

HauntedsandCastle · 06/10/2006 09:46

Barnaby I like, I worked with someone who called his son this and it grows on you.

Gretchen v pretty.

laudaud · 06/10/2006 11:43

Poppy,
When I was at school we had a Fergus - he got called Fungus which was particularly cruel as he had bad acne.
I like Daniel and have a nephew called this but it is starting to become a bit too popular.

belgianmuppet · 08/10/2006 19:25

Good evening,

I am 35 weeks on and BB is breech position with feet by it's head. doctor did not give me much hope on probability of turning
Has anyone had manual manipulation to change this to give a chance to avoid cesarien? If yes, did it work and did it feel safe? If not, why not?
Thank you

alisonrose · 09/10/2006 21:11

This is the God's honest truth. My friend is the head of a Pre-school in Somerset. A few years ago she had a set of twin girls starting. One was called Oceana. Now at a push that doesn't sound too bad does it? The other twin was called Neptuna!

belgo · 09/10/2006 21:13

I've heard of twins being called Stephanie and Stepheuille - lovely names on their own!

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 10/10/2006 17:58

Elibean, not Belle Helene!
Sylvie Helene would be gorgeous though.

Eliboo · 10/10/2006 20:40

No, you're right, not Belle Helene - apart from the pears, its also an opera!

Pondering Mischa (Misha??) at the moment.

DH likes Delilah, but it REALLY doesn't work in French. Lila does, though.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 10/10/2006 20:54

Thought Mischa was a boy's name?
How about Lena or Madeleine?

MamaD · 10/10/2006 21:18

Hey all,

I've got a Maisie - and of course almost all of her 'Wecome to the world' cards were addressed to Maisy.......an oversight on my part (but I think it looks prettier with an 'ie'

Love all the names (Greta rather than Gretchen) but agree with "I'll feel your pearl" shudders

I know sisters Kansas and Texas and sisters Summer and Autumn. I also know a Jack Daniel. All between 10 and 12 yrs now and yep, getting teased (although Jack Daniel is a bruiser himself so generally wins!)

I loved Xanthe when I was pregnant, but means 'Golden Blonde' and my dd was never gonna be a blondie. Also loved Tillie but bf called her dd Millie, so thought I couldn't use.

Agree, get a teenager to comment - best idea I've heard.

Eliboo · 10/10/2006 22:21

Need a teenager....good idea.

Friend's dd is Madeleine, I do like it but dh doesn't. One of many, grrr.

Mischa can be either, apparently - in my French baby naming book its a girl's name, with Hebrew roots, which is what we were looking for. Some spell it Misha. She'd probably end up being nicknamed Mimi (who, by the way, is the French mouse equivalent of Maisy Mouse).

I think Maisie with an 'ie' is prettier too

faby · 12/10/2006 20:03

Belgianmuppet, you may have been able to find someone who answered your question on another thread but I've had had this procedure. It is called ECV. It is not in the least bit pleasant, and feels very wrong as a lot of pressure is appied to the bump. It didn't work for me but I think that they didn't do it until I was 37 weeks a bit late I've read. I did everything t try and make the baby turn, inc accupunture. None of it worked I'm afraid. Good Luck

moomimin · 13/10/2006 16:40

Amyjade: I have a Harrison and a Madison Jade.

Elibean: We live in France btw. We couldn't decide between Madeline or Madison but when the Midwifes said Madison it sounded so pretty.

Other ones I think sound pretty at school are
Girls
Chloé, Sara, Océane, Clématine, Mathilde

Boys
Bastien, actually thats the only boys name at school that I think is ok.

However I too keep my names a secret and think that you should call your children what you like. I've had a lot of comments about having a Harrison and a Madison as they both end in son, also told they have been American Presidents names?

Good luck it is a tricky one,

tigerssayrrr · 15/10/2006 22:03

What about:

Angus Claymore Talisker (if you're trying to get back to your Scottish roots - actually I like Angus)

Jazzer Ed Hovis (nice countryside feel, I think)

Graham C++ Motherboard (encouraging technical knowhow / wearing of black T shirts / drinking real ale)
