Seriously. Whoever came up with that little gem that eating ginger biscuits or any form of ginger will help morning sickness was a liar.

I have tried on many occasions to eat one of the sodding biscuits when I am feeling queasy and every single time it makes me vomit or feel worse. Usually both.

So i'm saying it loud guys. I call bullshit on ginger

I was sick 3-6 times a day. Eating carbs regularly did stave off the nausea at times (but never in the morning - nothing fixed that bar staying in bed all morning!). Marmite on toast and salt and vinegar crisps seemed to be the better options but nothing was foolproof and ginger was hopeless...

hmmm...I remember this so well...in fact there are still certain smells that make me run for the bathroom and DD is 2 yo now...

I did not find that tablets helped at all. I found collapsing in a heap in hospital and having a lie down for a day or 4 or 5 got me at least partially functional....for a bit.

I distinctly remember saying in a slightly embarrassed tone, that I respectfully didn't really find the anti-emetics were working and the Dr. basically said, yeah that's because they are all shit.

BUT

lots of people do get a lot of benefit from them. So do go and at least try!

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 29/06/2013 20:19

Urgh - it's horrible this first trimester. My nausea seems to have eased a little, but I have all-day non-stop gagging. It's really unpleasant! The only thing that seems to help temporarily is junk food (not an excuse, honest!), the last couple of days I've mostly eaten Doritos and mayonnaise, which is ok while I'm eating but then the aftertaste in my mouth sets me off again. Fruit is occasionally ok. Just thinking about anything else makes me retch, and this often makes me sick without actually feeling sick.... I'm 8 weeks and soooooo fed up. Any suggestions for dealing with gagging?

I know I'm lucky not to be suffering anything like as badly as some of you - my sympathies go out to you all.

ChocChaffinch · 29/06/2013 20:20

you can ring the gynae ward at hosp yourself, you don't have to see a doctor 1st if you're know you're really bad
my pharmacist laughed me out - you're pg, what do you expect? patronising bastard
I had some ketones test sticks and was +4 couldn't keep water down, hospital were lovely and invited me straight in
4 days on a drip and anti-emetics saved me

the trick is to stay as hydrated as possible, literally any way you can get water in

milkshakes
different juices - apple etc
water/tonic with lime squeezed in/ lemon
sparkling water
suck icecubes
melon

twintrimum · 29/06/2013 20:31

Hi, I'm on cyclizine and it has taken the edge off the nausea and mostly got rid of the sickness. It is at least the difference between being sick several times a day, 5 days a week and maybe once a week with a few days with some nausea when I'm really tired. I find it worse on fri-sun after a tough week at work. It has reduced the number of days I feel like I've had enough and can't cope anymore. Not sure if that helps you but maybe worth a try.

DoingTheSwanThing · 29/06/2013 20:57

I had a jar of fizzy cola bottles by the bed and lived on ready salted crisps for about 4 months. Ginger = pants.

CadiM · 29/06/2013 21:30

There's not enough ginger in the ginger nuts anyway to really make a difference. If you're finding ice lollies helpful you might be better with something cooling like peppermint (polos, cool peppermint tea etc) instead of warming ginger.

banana87 · 29/06/2013 22:09

The only thing that ever helped me was 1) almonds and 2) boiled sweets. And only briefly. I took metaclopramide both times.

Junebugjr · 29/06/2013 22:50

Freezing cold full sugar coke. The ginger stuff did nowt for me, apart from make for very interesting flavoured vomiting seshs, sorry TMI!

Coke, Its total shite I know, but somehow it works.
Had Hyperemesis twice, and when in hospital with it, a very experienced midwife or consultant (can't remember which) used to advise us to get some. That and salt an vinegar crisps!

curiousgeorgie · 30/06/2013 00:53

I had HG with my first baby... The only thing that made me feel even slightly human was sprite. Anti sickness drugs were rubbish.

Then I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Goodbye sprite. Then the only thing that got rid of sickness was a c section...

BookieMonster · 30/06/2013 08:08

If ginger tea / biscuits don't sound like something you could face when not suffering from MS/HG, I can't see how it would help. Being kind, I think people are really hoping (misguidedly) to find something that makes you feel better.
Rest was the thing that helped me most with my MS (which was in no way comparable to what you are having to endure.) Overdoing things just made it worse.

Please do get help if your symptoms don't improve.

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 30/06/2013 09:25

Bleurgh. Spoke too soon about the nausea having calmed down. I agree with coke - it's about the only thing that's getting me functioning in the morning. Chewing gum seems to help a bit too - both the above are things I usually abhor!

MakeGlutenFreeHay · 30/06/2013 09:26

Think there's electrolytes in coke (as well as sugar and caffeine) which is why it helps for hangovers / MS etc.

batfuttocks · 30/06/2013 09:29

Forgive me for the ginger suggestion: I went on a course about treating nausea and vomiting and the ginger thing refers to 1.5g of dried ginger root. From a health shop. Not biscuits! But if you take the ginger extract apparently that is effective for reducing nausea - although no studies done of pregnant women. So you can officially tell the helpful ginger biscuit people they are talking bollocks, as you would need to eat about 100 biscuits to get that level of ginger in your system Smile

StealthPolarBear · 30/06/2013 09:37

I have a guaranteed cure for morning sickness. Wait a few months then give birth.

Homebird8 · 30/06/2013 11:17

Winegums. Keep them in every pocket to the extent that you find them 8 years later when wearing a jacket that you have had in the back of the wardrobe for a while. Oh, you have to eat them for it to help.

TallulahBetty · 30/06/2013 11:37

I didn't have a peep of sickness til 8 weeks. I was smug Grin

Then. It kicked in and lasted til the day I had her Envy I was vomming while they were inducing me Angry Angry Angry

The only things I found that helped me were lemonade and salt and vinegar crisps. Weird but both settled my stomach for a bit. I basically survived on them for 30 weeks. I often wonder how my DD is so healthy after my pregnancy Shock

hullmum31 · 30/06/2013 11:42

I was prescribed cyclizine, didn't take the 3 a day as instructed though, I just took them when I was desperate for some relief. They took the nausea away very quickly but made me very, very, very sleepy (I actually slept through a workman hanging a door and drilling in the same room!). Eating regularly also helped, probably something to do with blood sugars. Eat what you fancy, for me it was crisp sandwiches and the only fluid I could manage was instant hot chocolate. Really feel for anyone out there suffering because it really does make for a miserable pregnancy, I was signed off work for 18 weeks which was very embarrassing as there were 2 other pregnant ladies at work who were fine and I felt like people thought I was being a drama queen, but morning sickness is genuinely debilitating. Good news is for most people it eases off, I was fine by 18 weeks.

Lucielou123 · 30/06/2013 14:30

I ate lemonade ice lollies and drank ice cold lemonade - it was all I consumed for 11 days but it stayed down - mostly!
It was actually the doctor who suggested lemonade over water - something to do with acidity.
It's trial and error I guess.

My husband bought me some ginger biscuits (results heartburn) and tea (looked and in my eyes therefore tasted like wee).

NotAQueef · 30/06/2013 14:33

I was sick until 20 weeks, and the only things that helped me were sour things, so raspberries, sour oranges, grapefruit and tangfastics!
I don't think anything ever worked for the bile vomit in the shower trick I would do every morning ( sorry tmi)

Hope you find something that works for you soon x

A crisp green apple is the only thing I have found that will take the horrible taste out of my mouth

Shroomboom · 30/06/2013 20:48

I'm in Belgium and when I was in hospital they gave me bouillon which is stock basically. DH got some Oxo stuff at the supermarket and lo and behold I can drink it, and it stays down. Not only that but it also gets rid of the disgusting taste in my mouth.
I'm on meds, am 10 weeks and am surviving on this, chicken sandwiches and diluted sports drinks. It is utterly horrible Sad

clippityclop · 30/06/2013 22:10

Warm water with good real-type lemonade, and potatoes in any form especially Cornish pasties did the trick for me. Must be the carbs/hydration thing.
