if one more person tells me to eat a ginger biscuit I will punch them in the face

Seriously. Whoever came up with that little gem that eating ginger biscuits or any form of ginger will help morning sickness was a liar.

I have tried on many occasions to eat one of the sodding biscuits when I am feeling queasy and every single time it makes me vomit or feel worse. Usually both.

So i'm saying it loud guys. I call bullshit on ginger

Ahhh - Happy memories - driving to work with a packet of gingersnaps and a tesco carrier 'sick' bag just in case -
They didn't work for me either - still felt sick - but I only ever actually puked trying to brush teeth ...
(Fortunate really - did find out a few years later with a car sick DD - carrier bags have small air holes in them...really not suitable sick bags IYKWIM [vomit smiley]!!!)

I thought I read somewhere when I had just had DD that marmite is meant to help (maybe not on toast, just in case!). Guess it depends if you love t or hate it though. I remember feeling better after having it in the mornings when I had sickness with DD, so when I read it it stuck as I did a knowing 'nod' IYKWIM.
Just googled and found link www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/9504293/Marmite-the-latest-superfood.html
Good luck all ye sufferers!

Try ice lollies. At least you will get some liquid in you.
And on a off chance I had a McD chip. At the time was best thing I ever ate. Also the milkshake.

Also dh used to wake me at night and get me to take a sip of water, as I wasn't moving(sports water bottle) I kept it down.

Ginger was rubbish for my morning sickness too.

Only thing that made a slight difference was sipping fizzy water.

Sympathy. It's a big bag of shit

Tinned fruit and cinnamon and raisin toast was what got me to 16 weeks before begging asking for Cyclazine. My doctor asked if I'd tried ginger biscuits after I'd begged for tablets Hmm

My tip is if you can imagine eating it, the thought alone doesn't make you gag then give it a go. And at your best time of day take Pregncare vitamins. That way if they're all you keep down your baby will at least be getting something. And childbirth will cure it so stay positive!

Nothing worked for me Hmm I was a fountain of puke!! I get shivers just thinking about it..
Dried kiwi fruit slices, dried mango slices with salt on top helped a bit but that pick and mix stall never came back to the shopping complex near me..

Nothing helped me either, except prescribed medication from my doctor.

When I was in my full on exorcist - never ending projectile -phase, in between my violent vomiting episodes many people would quietly lean in and suggest ginger, like it's some secret, magical holy grail.

It may well help "settle" a slightly upset stomach when you've had one too many chocolates or a bit of a spicy dinner, but at the time my stomach was not interested in any help and rejected every bastard ginger biscuit along with everything else.

unlucky83 using a tesco carrier bag for a sick bag in the car is a very bad idea. I found out they have the odd small hole in when I stopped at traffic lights one vomity morning on the way to work.

Bags for picking up dog poo, on the other hand, work wonders Grin

Bunnylion -poor, poor you
I know about the carrier bag ...
Unfortunately I was on a clearway when DD was showing me what it was doing and making swirling patterns on herself, the seats, foot well, ...my gear stick...(apologies to anyone who is feeling queasy right now..)
I have a big freezer bag in car now for any car sick episodes...

Last year I ate so many dry/plain things in the first four months, my sickness was horrendous. Toast, oatcakes, biscuits and erm....oven chips.

'Try ice lollies. At least you will get some liquid in you. '

Those didn't work either. I remember puking up ice lollies. If they were still cold, at least they wouldn't burn my throat.

I hate ginger, so rice pudding was the only thing I could eat for about a week.

fizzy drinks helped me coz burping relieved some pressure.

also Brewer's Yeast.

but with each of my pgs there were different things I craved, gone off or found helpful.
too many to list.

but will succumb to peer pressure if mustGrin

I've not tried it but jelly is supposed to be good to eat when you struggle to keep anything down. Easy to swallow and tasty (if you like jelly) and easy to vom back up again. Also full of water so you keep hydrated. And sweet so you get some energy. I could not keep anything down at all or look at food or water or even think about it until about 20 weeks. The only thing that helped was medication and IV fluids. Pregnacare tablets and/or iron tablets are well known for making pregnancy sickness worse. I stopped taking mine.

If the sickness continues Abi head on over to the hyperemesis support page, or go to your GP and ask for treatment. Make sure you keep an eye on your urine output becasue you may be dehydrated too. If you can then little and often is a good idea but eat what you want and avoid the ginger! Nasty bloody ginger bastarding biscuits. I used to like them before I had HG Angry. Good luck finding foods you can keep down, but if it is unbearable go to the doc and get meds!

Report
Pollaidh · 04/06/2013 21:29

I had/have hyperemesis, and the only time I could tolerate ginger biscuits was after a lot of different antiemetics. Very annoying as people would go 'oh, see I told you ginger biscuits would work'...Yes, well, only after I'm full of fluid after 6 litres of IV in hospital plus 4 different types of antiemetic drugs, yep then I can tolerate ginger.

My dad, who I thought had understood how bad things got wouldn't believe I couldn't keep water down. "But it's just water." I know, but it comes right back up (fizzy, cold, in ice form, however).

On a more practical note Abi I reiterate what BungerBear said - if you aren't keeping any/more than a few sips of fluid down then you might be dehydrated. You can buy ketosticks from pharmacies, and if you measure +++ or ++++ then you need to get down to A&E. If it's not quite that bad but you're vomiting more than 2-3 times a day, or unable to face any liquid, then go and see your GP and ask for treatment - drugs such as cyclizine are very safe and often work well, if they don't then there's a whole list of drugs to work through to find a solution.

Also eat/drink whatever you think might work, even if that means living off lucozade or wine gums. Generally the baby will be fine as it gets the nutrition it needs from you, and it's the mother who feels rubbish. If your heart races, you're dehydrated etc though you need urgent treatment.
The Hyperemesis support group on mumsnet is great.

you poor thing you have my sympathy!

I puked all day every day from 6 to 16 weeks. it was hell!

not much worked but I did like baked potatoes with tuna and lots of salad cream (I know, gross) also fishfingers, and mexican chilli mccoys. anything strong tasting and savoury. I couldn't touch sweet things, and even the smell of a cup of tea made me retch. it was very odd as usually I love nothing more than a cuppa and a kit kat. I had a little boy. my friend craved sweets and orange juice, and she's having a girl. I've always wondered if its true that you want savoury things if you are having a boy, and sweet things with a girl. was certainly true for me!

I am struggling with morning sickness atm. I have no idea how people manage to work. I have a fairly flexible job, luckily, but the flexibility is reaching its limits.

What do you do if you're a primary school teacher, for e.g.??

Grin I remember that feeling well. I had hypermesis. In all of my pregnancies. I have had 4 DC's...

My sympathy.

On a brighter note, don't turn down toast after the birth. It will taste like the best meal you have ever eaten!
