MrsMigginslovespies · 17/04/2012 19:10

Sc0ttish, my sister (sorry to harp on about her) used for her first baby Dr Brown bottles which she liked. She then for some reason moved onto MAM for her second baby and LOVED them! Second to none she'd ever used. Also, she had a maternity nurse given as a super generous present from her MIL who also said they were the best bottles she (nurse) had ever used... we're v impressed with them so far and like that they can sterilise themselves in the microwave due to their clever base bit. We got ours on offer at ToysRUs for £19 for a box of goodies.

Re nappies, I've only got newborn size at the moment, as figure I can move onto other sizes as and when. So far, am going for Huggies, but open minded when the time comes as to which ones work best for him. Also got lots of wipes on offer (Huggies pure).

PictureThis · 17/04/2012 19:22

Sc0ttishlass it's me who's stocking up on the nappies. I've already got 3 packets of size 1, i'll probably buy a few more of the size 2s 5 or 6 packets of the 3s and so on. I'm reluctant to buy too many of the first size because DD was 8lbs when she was born so I imagine this one will be the same or more.

faintpinkline · 17/04/2012 19:43

You lot are amazing. I've done nothing for baby myself so far though I have been given a lot of things by my sister in law. We have about 100 baby grows ranging from small baby (just in case) through to six months, lots of other baby clothes, bouncy chair, various bedding items, a sling (which looks really alarming and I'm afraid of being tied up in), a rocking cradle, a car seat, a bouncy chair, a baby bouncer and six half finished large pots of sudocreme Confused

I know the big expenses for us will be pram and later on after rocking cradle a cot. I have NO IDEA what sort of pram to buy there seem to be so many now. I use buses a lot so it will have to be fairly small - I like the look of babystyle oyster but its £££££.

I'm 24 weeks tomorrow I can't believe I'm over half way through. They are talking about inducing me at 38 weeks so I could have a baby in 14 weeks time Shock

faintpinkline · 17/04/2012 20:00

Oh and for those of you who are mildly obsessed with how long you've got left this is a great site not that I check it on a regular basis or anything Grin

TheRealMrsSmith · 17/04/2012 20:40

Oh faint that website really helps to obsess (127 days and counting) Grin
ham that's a great tip for cot sheets. Might at some elastic and make some fitted sheets too. My sewing maching will be working overtime Smile

Not sure about the nappies, I will by a few packs of size 1 and 2 nappies to start with. Is anyone planning on using washable nappies? Only I used some last time but but gave up on them at about 9ish months and we got tired of spending money trying to find the right ones. Can't decide whether to go through that hassle again.

ishopthereforeiam · 17/04/2012 20:42

I love the hungry caterpiller ham!

With nappies dd is 16 months and in size 4. I guess if you stock up on sizes for newborn and size 2 you should be fine? I tend to buy pampers in Asda as you get two big boxes for £20. We also use aloe vera huggies wipes and those are £4 for 4 packets so we tend to have lots of those too!

Snowsuits - dd was born in winter and she had one of those fleecey bear suits from Gap (as a gift) which she wore to death! Haven't thought of one for this ds to be as I was hoping July, Aug and Sept wouldn't be too chilly but may be al to just use dd's old one as it is white...

Glad to hear my dear fish is bringing the laughs. Sid is also a "gold"fish in as much as he used to be gold, then turned white randomly! He is 7 years old in June and I've had him longer than DH hahaha! Hello sid:

ffscatmove · 17/04/2012 22:16

Poppy I think week 27 starts the final countdown too.

You lot are so organised! I am being really slack tight fisted cautious & waiting for a bit as my friend is organising an ante natal baby shower for me at 32 weeks - judging by previous dos I will accumulate a fair amount of stuff!
Have also been Freecycling - have acquired a baby bath & lifetime supply of terry nappies, plus generous friends donating many things.
So far I have acquired / on promise:
Travel system
Car seat
Baby gym
Baby bath
terry nappies + prefolds + wraps
Steriliser + travel/microwave steriliser
Enormous quantities of disposable breast pads!
TENS machine
Cheeky Wipes kit (reusable wipes)
Moby D sling (not yet arrived so no cat photo!)
Moses basket + stand
Rocking crib

Having said that I have just been looking at pumpkin patch (thanks for the links littlelamb!) and am going to order some bodysuits as soon as DH is not paying attention Grin
Am entirely obsessed with Very Hungry Caterpillar so Tesco is also calling!
Anyway past my nap time so toodlepip y'all......

PoppyS34wantssleep · 18/04/2012 09:01

Blimey, that's scary. Week 27. The 3rd trimester isn't that far away is it? I hope we can sort out a house in time or else we're gonna be really stuck!

ffscat good move re freecycle. Think I might have to try that. :)

MrsMigginslovespies · 18/04/2012 10:14

Apparently, week 23 is the week we're meant to get maternity/paternity forms sorted. Is that right? Have you guys done yours yet?

babbashouse · 18/04/2012 10:34

Hello all, may I join? Due August 4th. Completely terrified by your lists - I haven't bought a single thing, not a single thing. Is it just me?! :(

PoppyS34wantssleep · 18/04/2012 10:35

MrsM I picked my MatB1 form up from the doctors last week. I have told my HR Dept I have it but they haven't asked to see it yet.

Huia · 18/04/2012 10:53

Hello, another new person joining. Due 8 August. :)

babbashouse, you are not the only one. I haven't bought anything either - except for baby and toddler books (I have such a fetish for children's books!). I've been given several lots of newborn clothes but I really have to sort through them. One of my cats has been sleeping on the various piles, so they now need another wash as they are covered with cat hair.

I went to a friend's baby shower last weekend. She is due in June, and she has organised EVERYTHING - right down to the beautifully decorated nursery. I wish I could emulate her, but I'm too disorganised and indecisive.

Loupee · 18/04/2012 10:56

Eek, according to that website I've got 100 days to go Smile

Sainsburys also do the Hungry Caterpillar stuff, it was all half price fairly recently, then I stocked up at a 25% off weekend, hope its not a sign they are going to stop stocking it!

Also for those looking to buy nappies, the Huggies newborn box (contains 27 size 1 nappies, pack of pure wipes and cotton wool pads) is normally £5 but at the Asda baby event starting on Monday 23rd it goes down to £3. You also get vouchers in the box £1 off pure wipes (which are £1 in boots just now) and £2 another back of nappies, so you can use it off a bigger size, also vouchers for little swimmers and kleenex balsam. You also get the same again in Euro vouchers (we send them to MIL in Ireland) I'm not too fussed about stocking up on the wrong size as I know most places will exchange unopened packs of nappies.

I have been picking up bits and pieces over the past few weeks, need to go through it all and make a list of what I actually have, so I can can figure out what I still need to get.

My DH is currently getting himself sorted to go to Canada this afternoon, he's going for a month, back for a month, then away for a month again. I'm not too worried about this trip, its the second one, he's due back about 4 days before my due date Shock so I'll probably be annoying you lot with all my questions/rants!

Has anybody been to the baby show at Glasgow before? Thinking of going to the one next week, but not sure if it'll be useful, or just an excuse to spend money on gadgets and gizmos.

MrsMigginslovespies · 18/04/2012 11:01

Oooh, baby show in Glasgow...?! Might make the schlepp across Scotland if it's any good. Went to a wedding show once that was great for free samples of cheesecake. Wonder if this will be the same Wink!

Still stressing stupidly about baby monitors. The more I read about them and check reviews, the more I dither.

Helpful thanks re MAT form. Seeing midwife next week, so guess I'll get it then. DH needs to get on with his Paternity form I think then this week so it's done. He's stressing a bit about going off for his leave first two weeks back of term on September when he gets all his new kids. I can see his point a bit, so am being nice and flexible whilst still hoping to maintain a degree of firmness that I need him at home for a bit too!

PoppyS34wantssleep · 18/04/2012 11:10

MrsM My friends have one of the BT ones and they seem quite happy with it.

Hello babbashouse and Huia waves congrats and welcome Brew

We have absolutely nothing at all - yet. But I do have a great list now :o

Great tip about the nappies Loupee there isn't an Asda near us, but I might see if I can enlist my Sister to get some for me. I've been to the Baby Show in London, I'm sure it's probably the same kind of thing - it's quite interesting, although there is a lot of stuff there you didn't even know you'll need :o

PoppyS34wantssleep · 18/04/2012 11:13

ps: 108 days to go - that's agggggeeeeeesss away... (gulp!)

Loupee · 18/04/2012 13:09

Yeah I was wondering if the baby show designed more for new mums, rather than mums to be.
Think I'll go anyway, drag my sisters along, gives me something to do while DH is away.
MrsMiggins I bought a baby monitor from Boots because it was on offer, checked the reviews online when I got back, they were crap, so I took it back. Its so hard, because you don't know what features you will actually need/use. Turns out MIL is going to give us the one they used with her mum in the weeks before her death, think its pretty basic, but I'll use it for a while then see if I want to upgrade.

capecath · 18/04/2012 13:20

You may not even need size 1 nappies since size 2 is from 7lb... They will be in size 3 for quite a while so in terms of quantity, mostly stock up on 3's, then 2's (you'll definitely need 2's since they go up to 13lb) then 1's only if you think your baby is likely to be small.

MrsMigginslovespies · 18/04/2012 13:34

Just had another rather odd conversation with at times v difficult MIL re baby monitors. I'd called to see how she was today as she'd had a small heart checkup thing yesterday at hospital done. So, we're chatting away about her procedure and how it went etc. She then asked me how I was today and I'd said what I'd been up to, including looking online at monitor reviews. She then went really odd, saying in her day, there weren't such things, it just makes everyone paranoid when all that was needed was to poke your head round the door, that we didn't live in a mansion, therefore not diffcult etc to check. Was v wierd. I said well, we are just at the looking stage and despite DH's keenness for one with a video, I thought was a bit much etc. She's a bit nuts to be honest and DH not v happy, but I do feel that I'm damned if i do and damned if I don't (tell her stuff). Anyhoo, another MIL rant over. For now!

Lovemarmite · 18/04/2012 14:09

Wow, I've been away for a few days and there's so much chatter!

Oh dear MrsMiggins we too have the same with both our parents - it seems that things done 'in those' days were either much better or we worry about things too much now. I actually find that I can't say that much to my own mum as I get the same ol story of how she drank and smoked through both of her pregnancies and we turned out fine... hmm, did we? nope, sister has bad asthma for starts! OK my rant over, but if I hear that story one more time I think I might have to say something to put an end to it for good (OK maybe I'm mean!) :o
We've resorted to getting things ourselves and not consulting parents as their ideas are very different as it just causes a few crazy chats. I guess this way we're doing it our way and they seem to be respecting it so far. The comment recently was 'are you bringing them up as vegetarians' was a funny one, seeing that we're obviously classed as a different religion now!

We have not bought that much, just a few clothes and have a pram and car seat and the seat bracket on order. Other than that, I've chosen the cot bed (which os out of stock!) and have a little list of things but when I look at all your lists - ahhhh.. so much more to add. How much stuff can a LO need! I bought the gina ford book to get an idea of what she says and although prescriptive I have friends who swear by it... has anyone tried her methods with their DH1/2s?

Yesterday LO was really active, really got kicked and punched loads but today, he's being very quiet. Has anyone noticed that the movements are different and some days there is not much movement? I think it's nice having a day off as yesterday was quite an eventful day with what felt like rowing and kick boxing most of the day!

PoppyS34wantssleep · 18/04/2012 14:49

Hey Marmite, I was just thinking the same thing re movements - usually Bump is quite active, but he's been really quiet today. Even after drinking a can of cold orange juice and eating half a pack of fruit pastilles. I have a feeling he's probably just a bit lower and hiding behind the placenta. :o

Lovemarmite · 18/04/2012 15:38

Ooo fruit pastilles sound really yum!
I've discovered 'this water' lemon & lime and the raspberry & apple flavours - oooo yum! I've been finding plain water is giving me terrible indigestion but am trying to sip it... the joys of pregnancy!

Really hope he's a bit more active soon, I have a few feelings but they seem deep within, maybe the same as you Poppy, he's hiding today!

The3Bears · 18/04/2012 16:04

Hope everyone is having a lovely day today :)

Marmite Ive been feeling the same with the movements somedays he can be v quiet and others like today Grin v active indeed.

Has anyone else not been able to stop eating Blush for the past couple of days ive felt like constantly eating and it's driving me mad, keep trying to keep some grapes next to me but finding myself wanting something unhealthy like chocolate or crisps, so resorted to rice cakes today after a nutella sandwich!!! Which I would never normally touch as I hate it Grin pregnancy is a v funny thing
