Getting pregnant with irregular periods.... success stories only!!!

Hi ladies. I have been sniffing around the conception threads, but I thought I would come here in the hope of hearing some happy success stories. I have been TTC since January (to no avail!) My consultant has told me with my irregular periods (can be anything from a 6 -9 week cycle) that it will difficult for me to conceive (no shit sherlock!!) ... anyway just felt a bit down in the dumps this week and need to hear some positive happy endings :)

Right, here you go. Mine is a good one.

I had always had really irregular periods and when I came off the pill in November 2008 I had a period in March 09 and then July 09.

We thought we better get straight on it after we got married as clearly it was going to take forever to conceive

I got pregnant on day one of trying. Complete, utter fluke.

And the second bit of good news is that after I had my daughter my cycle became completely regular and I have now had 7 periods in 7 months.

Did you use anything to know when you were ovulating and can i just ask on what day of your cycle did you actually ovulate??

Heres mine. . . my cycles ranged from 35 days to 69!! and i could never pinpoint OV with temps or looking for EWCM, so we DTD every other night for 69 days (well after my period had finished) we were still doing it even when I started experiencing morning sickness etc!! Wed conceived on day 35 that cycle, I had no idea, it was purely keeping a fresh supply of sperm that did it! That was our 11 month of trying and we'd been active but not that active. With DC2 i got PG straight away on around day 22, it just seemed to be easier that time around- good luck and get shagging, regularly (btw i'd had the bloods to check for any issues, there werent any i just has irregular periods, DH did have slightly 'lazy' sperm too)

I never write this on here for fear of sounding smug, but I've always had mad periods and thought I'd have trouble conceiving.

DH and I decided we wouldn't 'try', but stop using protection and what will be will be. Fell pregnant immediately.

Also, my mum went to the doctors re: irregular periods and was told 'I'm very sorry but you can never have children.'
She said 'don't tell my husband that, he's just had a vasectomy as we're happy with the 2 we have.'

Agnus Castus is definitely worth a go for regulating weird cycles. I had very short cycles having been on the pill for 15+ years and agnus castus seemed to normalise them again. You can buy it in liquid form (tastes vile but seems to do the trick better than the capsules) from Amazon and other online places. Good luck!

Mine were all over the place for DS1 and 2. Anything from ever 14 to every 40 days. Got pregnant after 11 months with DS1. After not having my injection in july 2009 had a period in early december 2009 (obviously whilst we were away another later in december, another in january, then another in january then I don't remember as we had a stupidly busy February through to April 2010 and got pregnant somewhere in that period.

So stupid periods doesn't equal difficult to concieve. good luck!

I have PCOS and very irregular periods. I have 3 happy endings :) it took time, longer each time, but it's worth it. As someone already said, difficult but not impossible.

i'm feeling so much more positive, thanks for all the feedback! I think its just a matter of plenty of sex and hopefully we will hit the jackpot eventually! its hard tho trying not to be obsessive about it all!

I have never ever had a regular cycle. Came of the injection 2009, I did have periods, but my cycle ranged from between 44 days and 12 days. I did check when I was ovulating by pee sticks, but also by discharge and sore boobs.

I'm now around 5 or 6 weeks pregnant. So cross fingers crossed xx

I didn't realise how irregular my periods were until I came off the pill, until then I thought there were no problems with my cycle. Then my period cycle would range from 28-46 days and severe acne - after ttc for 9month I got pregnant and now 33weeks. Don't give up.

My sister in law only got periods every 2-6 months (really random). She was diagnosed with possible PCOS, but they weren't really sure. She started having acupuncture and sunbeds (for vit D) and fell pregnant naturally a couple of months later (still 2 months since her last period). So there is hope! She now swears by acupuncture and sunbeds, of course! Good luck and lots of baby dust to you!

Latin - I'm smiling as I could have been u 6 years ago. Cycles of 35-56 days since I started at 14. Thought it would take at least a year to conceive as only 8 periods a year. So my last 6 years have been busy - I've had 6 periods in total in 5 years and 10 months. Conceived ds1 after first attempt, ds2 did take 2 periods, ds3 was first attempt and fuck knows how ds4 happened. I'm due in 10 weeks and haven't had a period since June 2009!!! All I can say is breastfeeding is not an effective form of contraception . With 3 kids 4 and under and two full on jobs it's not even as if we were shagging more than once a week max. Good luck - you really may not need it.

Ps - bizarrely after each baby my period have got more regular - I'm now about 34-42 days so it has been easier to roughly know (ok not with ds4). I didn't even know I was pregs for the first 15 weeks - got the shock of my bloody life. Dh still in shock

I apologise in advance for TMI but here goes. I have always had irregular periods since I started getting them. Since January 2010 I started using fertilityfriend.com to track my periods more closely as we'd been TTC since Sept 2007 with no luck. Since January 2010 my periods have ranged in length from 30 to 72 days, before that I'd had cycles upto 90 days. I have PCOS (diagnosed when we were TTC earlier in our marriage - we tried for 2.5 years that time and then gave up) and we've done BBT tracking, digital fertility monitor, ferning microscope thingy. The latter two didn't work because of my PCOS and although the BBT tracking accurately showed the cycles I did ovulate, it shows you after you've ovulated. What it did do was make me pay closer attention to my vaginal discharge and how it changed when I did ovulate. DH also had problems on his side with his sperm being abnormal and rubbish swimmers.
We were told after tests that we were highly unlikely to conceive naturally without assistance and they wouldn't help us until we lost weight. DH started taking men's daily vitamins after I investigated what vitamins and minerals were needed for good sperm production but it wouldn't show any benefit for at least 3 months because of how long it takes to make good to go sperm. 4 months after he'd started taking those vitamins, I bought some pre-seed lube, which is a lubricant which is specifically made to mimic the discharge you get when you ovulate (I'd read that saliva can interfere with the process as could ordinary lube). The first cycle that we used the pre-seed lube when I got my ovulation discharge we got pregnant. I don't know if it was that which did it or DH daily vitamins or what. But after 3.5 years of trying (6 if you include the first time as well), we're now 21 weeks along in the pregnancy and I finally feel like I have a purpose because i'm going to be a mummy.

I wonder if you've read 'Taking Control of your Fertility' by Toni Weschler? It's a fascinating book.

DH and I decided to try for a baby and then he was working abroad for a month so we were a bit limited and I picked this up in the library for want of something positive to do.

Can't recommend it highly enough. I'm lucky and do have regular periods but after reading this I wasn't interested in the date of my period anyway - she teaches you loads of methods for spotting ovulation that aren't linked to period date which is the key thing really.

Writing style is excellent and i learnt so much. I'm certain she deals with lots of case studies of women with irregular periods. There's a website too but I just read the book.

Not nearly as extreme as most here, but my cycle varied from 27-42 days since coming off the pill (after 12 years ). It was actually at its most regular in the first couple of months after coming off - so much so that the GP suggested I might go back on for a month or two to "kick start" the system again.
I found ovulation predictor sticks helpful (you can buy them by the 100 from ebay for about £5 so I didn't worry about using too many) and was contemplating moving onto a clearblue monitor. I took my temp every morning and tracked cycles using fertility friend online.

And after 6 months or so of trying, DC1 is due any day now!

My story isn't one of perfect success but more about perseverance so hopefully still positive to hear!

My cycle was all over the place when we started TTC in March 2009 and I came off the pill. The first few months all was well but then I had a 55 day cycle, then a 30 day cycle, then a 60 day cycle, then 39, 37 etc etc varying longish cycles with no predictable pattern. After a year, I had blood tests and there was nothing obvious wrong so went for some acupuncture and tried the 'every second day throughout the cycle' method'. I got pregnant after about 2 or 3 more months (June 2010) but unfortunately that pregnancy ended in MMC at 11 weeks which was awful. Only upside was that periods were regular for a couple of months after MMC and I even had a normal 28 day cycle once... I was referred for full testing for PCOS but the urine tests were inconclusive. The ovarian scan was in February 2011 and gave me the all-clear for PCOS - and also showed a tiny foetal pole and heartbeat as I was six weeks pregnant! Finally!!

Am due on October 1st so just a few weeks to go, fingers crossed. The consultant I saw about PCOS sort of indicated (was a bit circumspect in everything he said) that I seemed to be getting pregnant but just not holding on to the pregnancies so that was knocking my cycle out of line. That made sense to me as I had never had such irregularity with my periods prior to TTC. Stress was also a major factor with me, I think , as I was in a job I hated and had other things going on too. So moral of the story is to keep trying, don't stress too much and make sure you get as much testing done as you can to explore all avenues. Good luck!

My cycle was ridiculous, short ones followed by long ones and I laughed when I was told to come in for a scan mid-cycle as clearly I had no idea when that would be. It took 2 years to conceive DS1 with a successful attempt at ovarian drillng. DS2 was a very happy accident.

2 years after DS2 I am completely regular for the first time. I've also lost a lot of weight and perhaps the two things are connected, but my consultant did say hat pregnancy might cure my irregular periods. Good luck.
