Hi ladies. I have been sniffing around the conception threads, but I thought I would come here in the hope of hearing some happy success stories. I have been TTC since January (to no avail!) My consultant has told me with my irregular periods (can be anything from a 6 -9 week cycle) that it will difficult for me to conceive (no shit sherlock!!) ... anyway just felt a bit down in the dumps this week and need to hear some positive happy endings :)

after stopping the pill my periods were totally erratic despite never being so before taking it.
I was diagnosed as having PCOS and was gutted.
It took us almost 2 years to conceive and i only found out the day before going in for my appointment to start clomid (i was on metformin to help regulate periods).
After having DD1 my periods returned and though do vary between 30 days and 35 are perfectly normal.
I fell pregnant with DC2 and DC3 (29wks pregnant now!) first month of trying.
Its almost as if my body didn't have a clue what to do the first time!
Good luck, am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I'm pg with DC2 and have maybe two or three periods a year on average (suspected PCOS). Went back to work in September after doctor said a second might not happen as we'd been TTC for a year an a half ith nothing. I was pg by October!

My mum has the same issue and had three DC, my older with the same issue is pg at 37 with DC1 due in June.

You may have to wait a but but in mum's day it was a standard try for two years before you even visited the GP.

There may be a longer wait but it doesn't mean it won't happen x

Ok hears m good news story, I was told 6 years ago I had pcos and my hormonrs were low I told my then bf and we started trying so after 9 months of trying nothing so we gave it a break for a month and got on with work and being us, xmas came and went and I got pregnant with ds, now to baby number 2, we dscided that we needed to give ds a playmate so we got on it 18 months past I had a laparoscopy got told no pcos no nothing prob never had it but my left ovary was defunct as my left fallopian tube was far too long and the egg would die b4 it reached my womb so I got a bit upset we had funds saved for a rainy day and this looked like the downpour we needed to spend it on so we booked in privately courses were supposed to start in january this year, I wasn't feeling right my periods varied between 3 weeks to 7 weeks whenever it felt like it or knew it was going to ruin a holiday etc so didn't think much of it when I went past 5 weeks, I kept telling mum no period yet! And she said get to 7 weeks and do one, now I dnt usually disobey my mum even at the grand old age of 28 but I bought a cheapy test and did it on xmas eve and yep i was pregnant!

Scotmum83 · 27/03/2014 18:45

I came off the pill and only had 3 periods in 18months have the symptoms of pcos but doesn't show up in tests/scans. We were being referred for fertility investigations but found out I was pg before we got an appointment :)

I hadn't had a period for 2 years when I became pregnant with my now 23 month old Grin
I'm now 24 weeks pregnant with number 2 and had 1 period every 3ish months since DS1.
Although I wasn't getting regular periods I was still ovulating the same time every month - only found this out when TTC #2 and doing those ovulations sticks, and getting to know my own body & recognising when ovulation was happening.

Good luck it can happen Grin

Jolleigh · 02/04/2014 01:06

I haven't read most of the thread OP but thought my story might be relevant for you...

I had ridiculously irregular periods up until the age of 19 when I had my first implanon fitted. The implanon stopped my periods entirely and I had 2 consecutively. In March last year, I had my latest implanon removed with the aim to conceive and we thought it would take forever not only to conceive but to know when I was functioning properly fertility-wise. I didn't have a single period before falling pregnant. I'm now 41 weeks so due any day Grin

Mine were always irregular & got pregnant with my daughter without actively trying but anyway, after having her mine too became regular! Unfortunately I experienced a couple miscarriages after that and they went back to being irregular again but now I'm pregnant with number 2 & going in for c-section tomorrow due to babies position so definitely possible Smile. Good luck

Shorty2014 · 21/09/2014 12:55

Me and my partner was trying for 3.5 years, during this time I had really irregular periods and would have them around every 4 months. After 2.5 years trying I went to the doctors for tests which all came back normal but my testosterone was a little higher than they liked so said it is possible PCOS so was referred to the specialist. After booking to see them and appointment due in 8 weeks time from booking, I read on the Internet about PCOS and everything was due to weight problems and losing weight could help, so I started Slimming World in July this year (and LOVE it - would highly recommend) by beginning of September I had lost 2 stone. I woke up one morning with cramp and being sick - thought I was just coming down with a sickness bug. However next day I felt fine just a bit sick throughout the day. Day after I was sick again out of the blue so decided to do a test and to my surprise it was POSITIVE Grin! Ever since I have been over the moon! Went to the doctors and had my first midwife appointment but because I had my last period 7 months ago , we are all unsure of when I'm due - which is very frustrating but will be book a scan next week so hopefully will have a scan very soon to confirm! Grin So it can be done ?? good luck!!

I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with dc 2. I have an irregular cycle of between 37 and 42 weeks. I found an app to track them to see if there was any pattern(there wasn't) and sorry if this is tmi but also keeping a diary of my cervical mucus helped. oh and regular sex around the times you may be fertile. good luck I hope it all goes well Smile

DanyStormborn · 21/09/2014 15:52

My cycles ranged from 28 days to 39 days and I got pregnant first month of trying. Irregular period alone shouldn't be an obstacle to conception unless the underlying cause of them is. Even people with 28 day cycles don't always ovulate on day 14 exactly. In that one month of trying I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility and tried to track my cycle using the methods in that book as well as ovulation tests. We had sex everyday that month and twice the day I though I'd ovulated. I knew that level of sex wasn't sustainable so I was hoping if I got better at tracking ovulation we could have sex less in future months, but that wasn't necessary.

midnight1983 · 21/09/2014 16:13

I had irregular periods due to pcos and hardly ovulated at all. We had been ttc for a few years, with no luck. I lost some weight, which helped, but also took metformin. About 6 weeks into taking the medication, my husband and I went on a v v drunken holiday and when I got back I was pregnant Grin. (Though I think you're not meant to drink a lot on metformin...oops)

CursiveLetters · 21/09/2014 20:05

I've always had irregular periods, and had been off the pill for 5+ years when we started trying so not a "coming off the pill" thing. It took me one year, but now I'm having a very health and easy pregnancy! I paid attention to when I was ovulating based on cervical mucus, but stopped even doing morning temps because it was stressing me out. So it took some time, but no extra medical help was needed. You will get there! :)

skyra13 · 21/09/2014 20:20

I came of my pill in November last year and we started trying, my periods lasted 2 weeks at a time and i had them every 2 weeks it was a nightmare, the doctors even sent me for an ultrasound to check everything was ok.

Everything was ok they said it will take time for body to get back to normal!

In june this year i had 2 periods one at the start of the month and one at the end, later on in july at a party talking with friends i realized i had not had a period for 3 weeks! So the next day took a test to find i was 2 to 3 weeks preganant!

I have my 12 week scan tomo! :)

Me and DH stopped planning when to have sex and just had it when we felt like it in the end! It will happen good luck! :)

JennyBlueWren · 21/09/2014 20:28

I had irregular cycles (4-6 weeks) and I got pregnant about 6 months after trying. Didn't try hard though (no ovulation tests or sticking to particular times of the month) -just having regular unprotected sex.
The one problem I had was that I would get excited when after 4 weeks I hadn't had a period and was getting symptoms (oooh I MUST be pregnant!). Found the best thing to do was to wait the longest length of time before testing.
I suppose it takes longer as you only get one ovulation every 6 (or 9) weeks rather than every 4 as other people have but that doesn't mean you CAN'T get pregnant.

ohthegoats · 22/09/2014 08:36

Cycle ranged from 14 to 59 days even though I had a coil.

Advice from other friends with irregular periods said to basically have sex a LOT. We also had age against us (I'm 40 with a mum who was menopausal at 39). Over Christmas and New Year we had a LOT of sex... more than once a day. I was pregnant with a fortnight, due next weekend. Had no idea in that time what was going on with my periods, had had one 25 days earlier than the day I decided to pee on a stick. To be honest though, I knew I was pregnant from day one of it happening - just felt different.

ohthegoats · 22/09/2014 08:39

Oh, I should add that whilst we had had the conversation about trying to get me pregnant, he asked that I not tell him when I had my coil out. He thought it might affect his interest in sex, or his performance I guess... anyway, I had the coil out the day after we agreed we'd do it, I was pregnant within 3 weeks. I was the only one with even half an eye on actually conceiving. I thought I should keep an eye on it because if it didn't happen in a year, I wanted lots of 'data' to go to the Dr with.

ColdFeetWarmHeart · 22/09/2014 08:45

I have pcos and irregular periods.on mini pill for years so no periods at all I that time. When we De idea to ttc and came off pill I had period every 2 months or so. only had 2 periods before falling pregnant,so conceived in just under 6 months of coming off pill.

bow - I conceived just after dh proposed. I honestly think being very happy about that, and not constantly thinking of babies for a week or so helped.

ohthegoats · 22/09/2014 08:52

I agree with pp too. We'd had (unrelated to the want to conceive) 6 months of really healthy living. I'd given up sugar, and was running a lot... I was pretty fit and lean. Boyfriend had given up alcohol and was getting fit for skiing at Christmas. We reckon those things probably helped too, by accident for us, but still.

cheesecurry86 · 22/09/2014 16:24

I conceived naturally with my daughter but had a late miscarriage at 21 weeks seven year's ago, also my period was always irregular since I was15 ,then found I have pcos and had op to remove a dermoid cyst on left ovary started clomid and provera and hormone tablet s no luck then the next step was injections in my leg and thought after second lot of them id just concentrate on my sister's children then after xmas this year I started my third and final set of injections and what ever would be would be, i found out on what would of been my little girls 7th birthday that I was pregnant ,i cried so long with relief and happyness xx now im 34 weeks with a boy and even though it has been complicated , bleeding at 16 week's found out I have a very short cervix so had to have a stitch and suffered with bad migraines but he is growing perfect and I am looking forward to meeting him in a months time x dont give up hun you will get your chance , took me 7 years and was all worth it ,I know how hard it is and you will be a mummy x just beleive it xx

cheesecurry86 · 22/09/2014 16:28

And forgot to mention I was on metformin whilst taking the injections as well xx
