Need some hand holding and problem solving as can't get my head around how it is supposed to work.

I would agree if she's asking for nappies.

So last night he asked for the potty just after I left for work. And then after dinner he peed in our room after saying he didn't need to go. So husband changed him and he immediately pooed into the clean pants.

So not a perfect day, but not bad!

Tee2072 · 22/06/2012 08:12

Forgot to say, he's at nursery all day today, so we'll see how it goes!

blackteaplease · 22/06/2012 08:48

Breast I'd also go back to nappies for a few weeks and give it another try if dd is getting upset

herbaceous · 22/06/2012 19:59

Still no poo today. I know he needs one, as he's asked for the potty a million times since he came home from nursery. But he won't go, not even in a nappy. Bit of a worry now.

He went to bed at 7.15, and since then has asked to get up for a wee or poo four times. Then produced nothing. I keep getting impatient, which probably isn't helping.

Don't know what to do!

Tee2072 · 23/06/2012 07:54

I hope he eventually got to sleep herb. No idea what to advise, sorry!

Son did fine at nursery. One accident first things, so we've agreed he'll be taken to the potty as soon as he arrives. He did poo, but it was in his pullup during sleep time.

herbaceous · 23/06/2012 09:59

Still no poo! And I've got my four-hour journey ahead. He won't even do it in a nappy, so putting one on won't help.

Christ. This is the most stressful part of parenting so far. Hate it.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 23/06/2012 16:49

DD is back in nappies.

However, she is still asking to sit on the loo as she still wants to earn chocolate buttons purely for sitting there. And her toy mousey did a wee on her lap and a poo on the floor when we went out for a Saturday morning coffee.

Argh...

Tee2072 · 23/06/2012 16:56

Well, we've had a mixed day here with a tantrum induced accident this morning, then a huge poo mostly in the potty and just now an accident because he wouldn't listen to me when I said it was time to use the potty.

So we're getting there.

Breast, I think you did the right thing. I'm really glad I've waited until he's let me know he's ready, even if we are having some bumps along the way.

Good luck Herb.

herbaceous · 24/06/2012 21:06

Well, I downloaded the infamous poo goes to poo land, read it to him a couple of times, and since then we've had two poos in the potty! And no wee accidents today!

Hate to tempt fate, but it feels like we've turned a corner.

festivalwidow · 25/06/2012 11:32

Hello! Started this weekend as well.
Day 1 - fantastically well, only one accident while attempting to find the potty, she seemed to really get it, including asking to go and what have you. Downside in that we never left the house and I felt like I was going to die of boredom.
Day 2 - a couple of accidents, not too bad but I had to keep reminding her.
Day 3 - not a great start as she announced she wanted to wear training pants to bed instead of nappies, but woke up absolutely soaked, so is now terrified of going to bed (sigh). Didn't ask once but hopped around a lot at the required times; one accident when she announced 'I NEED THE LOO!' but peed on the floor rather than coming to find the potty.

Day 4 and I've sent her to nursery in knickers: God alone knows how it'll go.
I am very stressed..

trixie123 · 25/06/2012 19:37

nursery will cope, though if its still very early days they might suggest pull-ups. DS has pull ups on for nursery still but he doesn't seem to treat them as a nappy so its not slowing him down (I think). In three weeks we've only had two poos in a potty or toilet and all others either in pants or night nappy or when he was really desperate, the floor. I need to print out pooland and read it to him. He was really upset this evening, sitting on the potty with pants on, didn't want me to take them off (he can't quite do it himself) and when I did he wouldn't sit down again. Just before bed we found a poo in his nappy Sad. And so the saga (and the washing) continues...

mistressploppy · 26/06/2012 10:05

Hi everyone - sorry, have only skimmed the thread but wanted to ask Hawthers - have you got any tips for how the hell to do this when you've also got an ebf 20wk-er? DS1 is 2.8yo and has probably been ready to start potty training for ages but I keep putting it off Blush because of DS2

He does poos and wees on the potty at certain times (after his bath he'll sit and squeeze if nothing's forthcoming immediately!) but is not motivated by the idea of big boy pants, ditching nappies etc. I suspect the main issue will be not wanting to stop playing etc to go and sit on the loo/potty

hawthers · 26/06/2012 10:20

hmm not sure i'll be much help i'm afraid. DS1 showed no signs of being ready but he is due to start at a nursery in September where he'll need to be potty trained so thought we needed a little while to get it to work. We had a potty that he'd never been keen on sitting on (too low and kept skidding about) so we bought a new potty (the baby bjorn apparently recommended for boys as its got a high front bit) and he just sat down and did four wees in succession - we went wild and gave him loads of smarties. we bought new pants and had a chat about now he was a big boy and ds2 was little and in nappies that we thought he could try being big like daddy and doing all his wees and poos in the potty/loo. its been hit and miss (see my posts about the poos!) but we've pretty much got it sorted. the first day was awful until he went about with no pants or trousers on and after that it has got better. I'd say start on a weekend or when you have back up so its not just you and the two boys to deal with. Unfortuantely DS2 just had to be popped off and on again while DS1 did his dance with the potty and the whole experience was the most stressful thing i've done in parenting but definitely worth it. a month on and its so much better. We did also have a dip in behaviour which i think was associated with 'stress' of the training but that has improved now too although that could just be being 2 Grin

also i have poo goes to pooland on pdf if anyone wants me to email it to them? drop me a pm with your email address and i'll wing it to you

May I join your thread? DD is 3.2 and I feel I really need to be more persistent with training - when we're home for the day/afternoon I'll offer knickers or nappy and she'll sometimes choose one, sometime the other. When we're out I always stick a nappy on as I'm a coward! Thing is, I could always come up with excuses - Family wedding start of August and lots of travelling around it, Paralympics start of Sept - and lots of travelling... but I just need to get on with it - no time will be perfect!

So, yesterday, once home from being out, knickers went on. Previously, if I put her on the potty she'll generally wee (and we've had some poos too, although they are often in the knickers) but if I don't initiate it, she'll wet herself - even if I ask her if she needs it.

We've got a long-standing sticker chart system (10 small stickers = 1 big sticker, 5 big stickers = an animal for her collection) for behaviour and toilet training. Yesterday (out of desperation) I told her that if she went to the potty on her own, she would get 10 stickers! It worked and she went twice on her own (admittedly each time after me saying 'remember what you need to do if you need a wee') but we had no poo yesterday. This morning she's been in knickers since she got up and we've had no accidents and 1 wee in the potty - after a reminder, but all on her own.

Fingers crossed we're getting somewhere. Scared about playgroup tomorrow though!

It's all slightly complicated by the fact she has cerebral palsy and doesn't have the physical ability to get anywhere quickly - so if she's desperate she probably won't make it to the potty in time. Also we're not sure if the CP means she doesn't register the need to go - it can be the case that she will be delayed in training.

Will pm you for Pooland though, hawthers.

Galena · 26/06/2012 11:21

Grrr, posted too soon! Wee on the floor.

mistressploppy · 26/06/2012 13:00

Thanks Hawthers, that does help. Might bite the bullet soon (we have nursery in Sept too)....aargh...

Galena · 26/06/2012 13:22

sigh 2 wees on the floor and one in the potty so far today. Can I really keep this up?! I already hate potty training with a passion!

festivalwidow · 26/06/2012 13:49

Can I cheer, please? My DD arrived home from nursery yesterday proudly waving her star chart - she'd only had one accident the whole day, and apparently was looking under a hedge for the potty at the time Grin
They've put her in pull-ups for naps while she gets the hang of it, but she's very happy using the potty there anyway, which is the main thing.

I hope today worked just as well - I did send half her wardrobe with her, but it doesn't look like drying weather outside (squints out of the window at large raincloud)

Galena · 26/06/2012 14:06

Well done Minifestival! Having had a dry afternoon yesterday and a dry morning, we've now had 3 wees on the floor - although the last one was a) outside and b) you can trace the damp footsteps down the path and a puddle in front of the potty as she tried to pull her knickers down, so maybe we are getting there.

blackteaplease · 26/06/2012 16:34

Well, we had mixed success over the weekend, dd was in a pull up for the wedding on Saturday and I intended to take her to the loo every hour but well meaning grandparents took her off my hands to give me a rest and the loo breaks got fewer and further inbetween. Add sugar overload and a late night into the mix and she ended up tantrumming when I tried to put her on the loo before bed and it took 3 attempts to get a nappy on for bedtime.

Fortunatly that was only a temporary setback. We were out for the entire day yesterday and I went for knickers, dd did have an accident at 4.30 but she was distracted playing with her little toddler friends so I'd count that as a good day.

I have reinstated the sticker chart for poos to see if that helps. Still pooing in pants.

Galena · 26/06/2012 17:09

3 wees on potty today and 3 on the floor. First 'proper' day of training. Is this good/bad/indifferent? Do I go for knickers or nappy tomorrow for playgroup (I stay - separation issues)?

trixie123 · 30/06/2012 22:42

how is everyone doing? the thread has gone quiet - does that mean we've all given up or we've all succeeded? I hope neither as we are still bumbling through, with the occasional resounding success and the occasional utterly frustrating failure like today when I asked him when out if he wanted a wee, he said no, then about 30 secs later peed his pants Sad. Also had a huge wee on the kitchen floor when standing RIGHT NEXT to the potty...

Pleasefiveminutesforme · 07/07/2012 22:12

Hi all, I have been a lurker on this thread since it was started... We started training at the beginning of June and it took 10 days to get it right although we did seem to regress for a few days this week with lots of wet accidents (DS hurt his willy and I eventually after 3 days took him to the doc who said this could have been the reason for the accidents) but we seem to be back on track now.

DS is 25 months so quite early but he was running around without a nappy at home and using the potty no problem (we have wooden floors so had the luxury of trying this) so we went for pants after doing this for about 2 months. I might have done it sooner but waited until DD was 12 weeks before I started with the pants. Only posting now because mistressploppy you were asking how it was with the ebf which I am doing, and it has been fine but I basically stayed in for a whole week. And was going MAD with the boredom. Then we all went to soft play with DH on his day off from work and when DS had both types of accidents there and DH DARED to question if we had gone too early on the training (he deals with it once when I'd been living and breathing potty training for 7 days) he got the biggest barrage of abuse and was informed he isn't allowed an opinion one week in, he was allowed one a week ago but he'd left it too late! Luckily that was the last poo accident although I believe there was one the week later at nursery but none since.

The other thing I wanted to say is trixie have you sacked your childminder yet, what is she on, telling a child that poo is disgusting and horrible? To train you want them to be proud to poo, how lucky that that poo gets to go home to Pooland because it got put down the loo?

Good luck everyone else and all I can say is keep at it and chuck pooey pants in the bin, it still works out cheaper than pull ups if you wash wet ones and chuck poo ones ( as long as you buy tescos or primark and save those trendy Zara boxers for when they crack it!). And buy lots of SPARKLY stickers for rewards (tescos do Thomas the tank sparky stickers' and a great reward chart. I gave smiley stickers for wees and sparkly stickers for poos.

mistressploppy · 07/07/2012 22:44

Thanks for posting, Please - seeing at it's going to rain for the next month I think we might just have a crack at it in the next week or so! Staying in for a week won't seem so bad if it's chucking it down outside Grin

Good tip re the binning of poo-pants

tacal · 07/07/2012 22:45

Started training ds in November and 8 month later have finally got a poo in the toilet! Hopefully thats us sorted now. Been doing wees in toilet since March and dry at night around the same time. Thought he would never do a poo in the toilet. We had a big poo party after he did it. Good luck every one!
