Need some hand holding and problem solving as can't get my head around how it is supposed to work.

Me too!

My DD 2.8 has gone to Grandparents today. I am relieved I needed a break she complete did me in this week.

I started 8 days ago. Started off not too bad, about 50/50. Then Thursday and Friday, complete stubborness. She holds it, so understands bladder control. Follows me to the loo first thing, and does a wee on toilet, great!

But after that goes of to a corner of the dining room and wees on the floor rather than the potty! I tried putting the potty there, but she won't have it, she just moved her wee location!

Like has been said, I am soooo laid back usually, but got abit screetchy and felt mean, going on about it all the time - sick of the sound of my own voice.

I honestly think she CAN do it, bladder control is half the battle....grrrr.

WhispersOfWickedness · 02/06/2012 14:59

I am bloody exhausted! DS currently napping with a pull up on, I know I 'should' just put a waterproof pad underneath him but he was exhausted as well and clearly looking very fed up of the whole sorry business, so I stuck the pull up on him.
We 're going to a jubilee party in 24 hours, I have no idea how we're going to manage Confused

trixie123 · 02/06/2012 15:21

first day: two wees in potty cos we saw him and lifted him on, one where he actually said wee wee, went and sat, said "its coming" and did a tiny one (on the promise of ice cream). No poos and I think he's holding it in cos he normally would have done at least one by now - any ideas on that? Whispers, good luck for the party - have you got a portable potty? Just a cheapy one and some plastic bags should do it.

blackteaplease · 02/06/2012 15:53

started yesterday with dd 2.4. nothing on toilet or potty so far, one poo in pants on day one and 5 wet pants day one, 6 wees on carpet so far today.

I am starting to think it's too early and just to put her back in nappies.

hawthers · 02/06/2012 17:02

GRRrrrrr ds was making all the noises he needed a poo so we spent ages hanging out on the potty only for it not to arrive. DH then suggests a walk to the shop with DS1 while feed DS2 and is surprised when DS1 poos in his pants in the park....

And guess what he did with the poo? I can't believe he did this btw and will be having words with him (dh I mean)

Yes, trixie, we do have a potette but I'm not sure how the rest of the village will feel about us whipping it out next to them eating cake and sandwiches! Maybe if it was sunny so the party was outside, but it will be inside as the weather is appalling Sad
Hawthers, don't tell me he threw it in a hedge or something?! Grin
It's going 'ok' here, we're on about a 50% success rate, but only if we put him on, he has never asked to sit on :-( Also waited until his night nappy was on last night before he pooed, which is frustrating Sad Anyone got a copy of the Pooland story they could email me?

trixie123 · 03/06/2012 10:21

the out in public thing is difficult isn't it? DS seems to have got the idea for wees in the house but wet two pairs of pants and shorts at the park yesterday. Still not keen on poos at all, we need to catch him at it and put him on. Good luck to everyone today!

seabuckthorn · 03/06/2012 10:48

Hi all, we seem to be doing ok. Going for the nappy free time in the house. Worked really well, not doing great with the poos I keep waiting.
He wore pants for the first time yesterday and wee'ed in them. I think if DP had been a bit quicker in getting DS to the toilet.
We are still doing nappies at night much to DS' disgust! I don't know whether dry nights or similar would be better? He just takes the nappy off!
What are you doing when you go out in the car, day out? Nappy?
I don't want to rush him into pants but I dont want to get stuck in a rut.

Sorry for the rant I have no one to talk about my potty training woes!

seabuckthorn · 03/06/2012 10:58

Sorry a lot of that doesn't make any sense.
If DP got DS to the potty quicker I think we would have avoided the accident.

BuntingBeGone · 03/06/2012 11:01

Another hand holder here - yesterday 5 wees in pants and 1 poo. This morning - nada so far!

Girlsville · 03/06/2012 13:25

Hi all
I think the early days are hard?
Today is day 7 for us - last night I was feeling so stressed as dd1 seemed to have gone backwards on Friday and yesterday having madengoodnprogress. I was about to give up but then this morning she has asked twin to do a wee on potty and then done a wee each time and once I asked her if she wanted to sit on potty while we were at soft play and she said yes and did a wee again! So feeling bit more positive. Am finding this process very stressful!

blackteaplease · 03/06/2012 18:52

I have to admit I put dd in nappies today to take her swimming and she didn't want to take them off or go near the potty or toilet when she got home. So I backed off today and we will try again tomorrow.

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/06/2012 19:09

We took a step backwards today as well, the only way we can stop accidents is to put him on the potty/toilet every half hour, but he has started getting upset when we do that so we put a pull up on him to go out to the party this afternoon and left it on him when we got back. Not sure where to go from here, should we give up for a bit or should we carry on in the hopes of a break through?

seabuckthorn · 03/06/2012 20:47

I take the nappy off straight away when we get home. I'm going to take the potty with us tomorrow but keep him in a pull up.
It's so hard to know what to do, I worry I think he would rather just run about naked and just jump on the potty when he wants!
It's a slow process I think?

RalphGnu · 04/06/2012 07:54

Took DS out and about nappy-less the other day. Disaster. Came home witha wet little boy and wet buggy. Sad

Very annoyed at DP. Was my turn for a lie-in yesterday, so Dp got up with him. When I came downstairs DS was in a nappy. When I asked why, DP said DS had weed on the sofa and that he couldn't be bothered getting up to empty the potty every 5 mins. Great. So I spend all week doing all the tedious work of encouraging, clapping, emptying miniscule amounts of wee every 5 mins, and on the one day of the week DP has to do it, he can't be bothered. Angry

WhispersOfWickedness · 04/06/2012 08:29

Oh Ralph, how disheartening Sad I was a bit Angry and Hmm at my DH when I said I needed him to be around when we did potty training to support me and he virtually said it was nothing to do with him!!! Angry I put him straight about that anyway and he has been on board since.
We have had a slightly more successful morning, we have had no accidents, but again, I am putting him on the potty every half hour ish. He just doesn't seem to be bothered about it at all, not interested in telling me when he needs to go, so I'm not really sure where to go from here Confused one thing I did wonder is that he is far happier in clothes, he doesn't want to go naked, he would rather wear pants, and trousers this morning, so I wonder if it's a modesty thing and he's not asking because he's a little bit embarrassed to Confused
Ah, it's complicated, this potty thing!
Apart from DH, I don't have any real life support, all of my friends with kids have younger kids, so are waiting for us to do it so they can get tips from me!! HmmGrin

seabuckthorn · 04/06/2012 09:26

My DP hasn't been great either all 3 pants accidents have been when he has been with DS.
DS does so well when he is nappy/pantless but wee's in his pants.
Sigh.
I think I need to bribe him to sit on the potty every 30 minutes!
Hope we all have a better day!

WhispersOfWickedness · 04/06/2012 09:57

I hope so too sea! Funny how we have opposite children, DS is much happier in pants and trousers! Trying to extend the time between putting him on potty to 45 mins, so far so good!
Good luck to everyone for today! Grin

trixie123 · 04/06/2012 12:26

oh dear - I came on to see if there were some encouraging stories as we seem to have regressed slightly today as well - though he always does giant wees after swimming and DP didn't sit him on the toilet at the pool so not surprising really. DS seems to be getting the idea at home, for wees anyway, but not out and about. Park on day 1 and park + pizza hut on day 2 but lots of accidents. As well as the changing bag now I have a giant plastic bag with towel, 2/3 sets of spare clothes, pottete etc!

beetlebat · 04/06/2012 14:05

I've been looking at this thread for a few days and thought I would offer some encouraging words, and seek further advice. We are on holiday and started with DD (2.1) about 10 days ago. Chose to do it on holiday as it is warm and only tiled floors in PILs house where we are staying.

Day 1 was dreadful with her refusing to have anything to do with the potty. Then we bought a large bag of M&Ms and initially offered 1 for just sitting on the potty and 2 for a wee on the potty. She is very food orientated and by the end of day 2 she had pretty much got it for wees, and we have had not looked back bar occasional accidents when she is very busy, and even then it is just a little before she gets herself there. We rarely remind her to go except just before going out, and she generally takes herself to the potty when needed.

We now just do 1 sweet for a wee and offer 3 for a poo, but unfortunately she's a bit constipated here (holiday food, I think) so I've been quite pleased if they have appeared anywhere!

We have been out and about a lot and just take a potty with us, including an all day boat based sight seeing trip. I just avoid meeting anyone's eye when pouring the contents into the nearest flower bed or sitting her on it in the middle of a cafe!

However my concerns are as follows:

  1. She cannot pull up her own pants, or down for that matter. No problem here as bare bum under a skirt is fine but she will have to wear them, and trousers at some point. Any idea how to achieve this, anyone?
  2. How do I stop the treats? Last night I offered a potty stop before putting on nighttime nappy but when she asked if there would be a sweet and I said no as already cleaned teeth she then refused. She will be back at nursery on Thursday and I don't know if they will do treats.
  3. No idea how to begin using toilets. She is too little to get on them herself and will be for a while, but I don't really want to take a potty everywhere we go for months! Any thoughts?

Good luck to everyone else still persevering.

RalphGnu · 04/06/2012 14:32

Hi beetlebat! Glad to hear it's going so well for you and if you're brave enough to potty train outdoors then I'm up for it too. I doubt anyone will bat an eyelid but I've perfected the withering glare, just in case!

  1. My DS can take his pants off but very slowly and he can't get them back on after, although it amuses him greatly when he gets both legs in one leg hole. I guess it will just come down to lots of practice and they'll get there eventually.
  1. Stop the sweets and try stickers/extra bedtime story instead?
  1. I'm going to get DS one of those little stools to go next to the loo when he's a bit bigger, can anyone recommend these? He went on the loo at home for the first time today and he found it quite exciting but he hung on for dear life and asked if he would fall down it - don't really fancy the idea of him clinging to public loo bowls so guess it will be potette/bushes until he's a bit bigger!
RalphGnu · 04/06/2012 14:37

Whispers, just wanted to say, I first tried potty training about 7 weeks ago and it was exactly like you describe it with your DS - no interest in the potty, not even trying to reach it when he needed a go. All of us got so fed up that I gave up and having come back to it now and tried again and found it so much easier, maybe the same might work for you?

blackteaplease · 04/06/2012 16:20

We have the tippitoes step stool, they are very grippy on the floor and you can stand on them with wet feet and not skid. Dd uses hers to switch lights on and off, reach her books and get in the bath, she just doesn't use them for the loo!

Slow progress today on day 4, 2 poos and 2 wees in the potty. 5 or so wees and 1 sneaky poo on the floor where I didn't get her on to the potty in time. She has asked for nappies several times today and she still shows no inclination of knowing when she is about to wee or poo and she hasn't asked for the potty once.

We are going camping in our new tent on wednesday, I had visions of dd running round bare bummed and therefore potty training being cracked by next tuesday when we go back to work. The forecast is for solid rain so if we want to leave the tent she will need to be in a nappy and a million layers. Eek.

seabuckthorn · 04/06/2012 18:01

Hi all, glad to hear some progress.
Had a little progress here, first ever poo in the potty!
He will go quite happily as long he isn't in pants or pull ups

Anyone know where we go from here? Sadly we will have to stop being naked at some point!

hawthers · 04/06/2012 18:56

God knows we've just had another poo on the pants. He did at least tell us he was doing it but I had asked him to come to the loo 30s beforehand....
