A brand spanking new thread where we can chat about the state of our eggs, SWI, our veg patches and any other topic we fancy

DD1's party- that's pretty exciting.

We had 3 recounts here (ld/lab, labour won by 120 votes in the end

Am just beginning 24 hours of DP/DS free time! I am so excited, the only other time I've been away from DS overnight was back in Feb/March time when I had such horrendous flu that I don't think I moved off the sofa the entire time, so this is my first official overnight break .

Very impressed with potty wee lollipop (that is, DD using potty. Would be less impressed with you using it). DS is absolutely nowhere near even being slightly aware of when he's done anything! He'll merrily sit in wet/dirty nappy until someone notices.

Tories managed to actually increase their majority round us - we're in one of the safest tory seats in the country (Something like 55% tory vote), but DP and I did out bit to reduce their lead by a couple of fractions of a percentage, for all the good it did. Quite excited to see what happens with coalitions etc in the coming week/s.

ninja · 08/05/2010 11:15

hopefully it's ridiculous isn't it that some many people's votes just can't count?

I never used to think that PR was a necessity but so much of this election was about tactical voting and that can't be right can it?

My parent's area has been LD for about 20 years but has gone back to conservative . They went LD when the conservatives tried to put Norman LaMont in a 'safe' conservative seat and the local people revolted

FannyPriceless · 08/05/2010 11:57

I am nursing a horrible raging sore throat and lost voice. I'm cursing the fact that I can't take medication while pg!

Downstairs I can hear DH teaching DD how to put things into the rubbish bin, and praising her for doing it right. For obvious reasons this is something I have avoided mopst emphatically! Oh well, I'm now imagining a future of missing mobile phones, car keys, etc, and sorting through bags of smelly rubbish to find them. Great!

We didn't even get to vote at all. The elction in our constituency was cancelled after one of the candidates died. We vote in 3 weeks time instead, but everyone here feels very cheated!

Meglet · 08/05/2010 15:10

FP I have had to stop my family teaching ds to put the plug in the sink to wash his hands, I could see that turning into a disaster. Sometimes toddlers can have too much information .

hopefully enjoy the peace.

I have a rotten headache and bad sinus / wisdom teeth pain today. Yesterday at work I was wailing about needing a bottle of vodka and a scalpel and I'd cut the damn teeth out myself . My dentist isn't keen on taking them out as they are impacted in the sinuses and might cause problems, which they do anyway . Off to Boots later to see what painkillers will help.

Debs75 · 08/05/2010 20:39

Meglet I feel for you I get nad sinus pain and it is horrendous. Luckily I have never had any wisdom teeth so they don't affect it but rl friend who regularly gets infected wisdom teeth assures me they are agony. An Uncle who sufered with theeth used to put an aspirin or paracetamol straight on top of the tooth as he swore it stopped the pain quicker.

Robyn loves putting things in the bin, usually nappies, she thinks she is very clever and likes a handful of cheerios as a reward. Seriously I have never know someone eat so many cheerios.

ninja · 08/05/2010 22:01

Imo I've found the other shoe - do you want a pair of blck patent clarks 3.5F shoes? They look hardly worn. They were passed on to me but were never going to fit Maebh.

I'd be happy to know they were goign to a good home

ninja · 08/05/2010 22:21

I can send you some size 4 wellies too. personally I'm too lazy and just let M splash in puddles in her shoes . It's a wonder she doesn't have pneumonia.

DD1's party today at the local countryside centre. It was lovely and she's a grown up 7 now

M easily goes through to 4 O'Clock before napping and has gone the whole day , DD1 stopped at 18 months though so I'm thankful for any. She will usually sleep for 2 hours but has also survived on 10 mins

becaroo · 09/05/2010 08:44

meglet I sympathise...I had all 4 (impacted) wisdom teeth and nother impacted one (on the side) out under general anaesthetic in 1995 and it was wonderful!!!! When I woke up in recovery I was pain free for the first time in 2 years Lots of blood though

The pain afterwards wasnt as bad as I had been told either...they had to dislocate my jaw so couldnt really opne it very wide for a few days so lived on mashed potato and custard (nice) and had minimal bruising.

As for you pain, try something like Solpadeine,,,its paracetamol and codeine in soluble form so works faster. I used tons of it before I had them out.

I have some asda size 5 wellies in blue if anyone wants them?

imoscarsmum · 09/05/2010 10:05

Ninja that is very kind of you, I would love to take you up on your kind offer of the shoes and wellies. I would want to pay for the P&P though, so send me an email to imoscarsmum @ aol . com and we can sort it out. I can send a cheque or do a bank transfer to you.

we're doing OK here - bit of a bad night due to C coughing alot and DP supposed to be flying back from Munich today - keep everything crossed that the ash cloud doesn't get worse - his flight is not till 9pm and I'm supposed to be in London next week for work so I'll be buggered if he gets stuck (and, more importantly, we want him homne safe!!)

Robyn slept the whole night through from 8pm to 9.30am last night, with one minor wake at 6.45 where we just had a little cuddle before she went back over. NO boobie needed which was great. Am being ruthless and not feeding her back to sleep in the early morning, just to get her to sleep on the night. My boobs are already feeling better. She had no nap yesterday which helped her go to sleep easier. She tends to want to nap at around 4 as well, unless we have been out for lunch, then she naps almost straight after for an hour.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 09/05/2010 13:43

Hurrah for a sleeping Robyn!

I'm v lucky with ds. He sleeps from 7-7 and has a 2 hour nap at lunchtime. He can survive on a 45 minute nap if we're going out, but by about 5pm he turns into a tired nightmare and has meltdowns over the smallest things.

DS's new trick is sniffing. He goes up to anything and everything and sniffs it. I was having a wee the day and he bent down and sniffed my knickers It really made me laugh, and because he got such a great reaction he thinks it's great. He also likes to sniff his dirty nappies - very odd

I hope your dh gets back IOM.

I also hope Hopefully and Carrie have enjoyed their child-free weekends

Sat down for the first time today after clearing up after chaos as I had 4 other mum friends and toddlers over this afternoon (and managed to get baked chicken, carrots & peas on the table by 5.40pm - yay me!)
Well no one else will congratulate me cos DP still in Munich
They closed the airport around 2pm. C has been saying 'daddy' all afternoon, which is making me very sad. Also feeling v sorry for myself having to do everything on my own. It's all about expectations I think. I know there are plenty of people who do it alone every day but when you're used to someone being around and you're coping alone, based on the fact they'll be back on a certain date, it suddenly feels very hard to keep on coping.
DP was also supposed to be looking after C tomorrow afternoon, so I've had to ask MIL if she'll have her all day rather than just the morning.
I'm supposed to be in London on Wed and Thurs with work. I don't mind missing the course I'm booked on, but I'd also arranged a crafty ticket for Wicked in the west end - something that's rarer than rocking horse s**t when you have small children.

DP is coping quite well and has got himself booked on tomorrow's flight. If that is cancelled then he has a few colleagues with him and they will hire a car and drive up to the Hook of Holland. Sadly all self-employed, so all coming out of their own pockets.

And finally a question - C has been coughing badly for the past few nights (I'm going to take her to the docs tomorrow I think). It doesn;t seem to wake her up, in fact one night I picked her up I was so worried and she got very cross and clearly wanted to go straighht back to her bed and go to sleep again. She doesn't want water either. But I feel terrible sitting in front of the tv while she coughs away but unless she cries i don't really know what else to do. Any thoughts?

becaroo · 09/05/2010 21:59

Hi IOM..fingers crossed your dp gets back ok. Has your dd got/had a temp? Nappies ok? Feeding normally? Sleeping normally? Or is has she not got much appetite and is more drowsy than usual?

I think you are right to take her to the GP....will put your mind at rest x

ninja · 09/05/2010 22:03

IMO both of mine have had that cough - I don't think there's anything that you can do really. Raise her with a pillow might help but if she's sleeping I wouldn't worry too much.

Sorry to hear about your DH, I hope you get to wicked get him mback soon.

I've e-mailed you - let me know if you didn't get it. The only thing is at the moment I can only find one welly (M has a thing about shoes) so I'll just send the shoes. Don't worry about p&p either.

imoscarsmum · 10/05/2010 10:01

Thanks Ninja, have replied.

Thanks for your advice becaroo, she had a better night last night and apart from the cough is her normal happy, destructive self

Talking to other mums (and DP and colleagues in Germany), it sounds like this is something going round so I'm going to see how she goes. May give her some buttercup syrup. Know it's not for under 2s but I'll just give her a small amount as she's almost 20months.

Better news from munich. The airport is open and the flight to heathrow took off earlier on time. DP is booked onto the 9.20pm easyjet, so we're just keeping everything crossed.

Am knackered today cos c coughed a bit in the night and I always wake up, but then the cat was yowling at 4.30am and wouldn;t stop till I came down to see he'd brought me a present of a dead vole. . I can't be cross cos he obviously sussed I wasn't happy so tried to cheer me up the best way he knows how.
Better go and earn my ££.

DastardlyorSmugly · 10/05/2010 10:04

DD has also had that cough imo. I bought her some tickly cough medicine and that seemed to help her sleep. I also dripped some of that vapour stuff around her cot too.

DastardlyandSmugly · 10/05/2010 10:36

Just put some Devon pics on profile if anyone interested.

CappuccinoCarrie · 10/05/2010 11:51

DS has the pox HOORAY! We had to avoid all our friends this week incase he'd picked it up from DD, and thankfully our quarantine is not in vain. Friends are very kindly taking dd out so she still has a good week.

My weekend was nice, good times catching up with people and making new friends. Not nearly enough sleep though, went to bed at 10 last night to make up for it! It was so weird not being with the kids and not being responsible for anyone. I found myself wandering round not quite sure what to do with myself. And I managed a cappuccino in peace and quiet, bliss!

DS does sort of sleep on demand in that at any point in the day I can put him to bed, sing the lullaby and give him his muslin and he sucks his thumb and off he goes, but if he's had one sleep he's unlikely to go for another one. I wake him up from his nap every day after about 2 - 2 1/2 hours as I don't want it to impact on his night time sleep. Generally he goes 7-7 with the odd 5am start (we just give him milk and put him back to bed) but this morning it was 9:10am, thank you pox

IMO I think your dd is likely to adjust quickly to the after lunch nap. DS used to have two naps - one in the morning and one after lunch. He dropped the morning one at about 16m but struggled to get all the way through to lunchtime without nodding off, but after a couple of weeks he was able to stay awake all the way through. HTH.

becaroo · 10/05/2010 12:35

hmmm...the pox didnt help ds1 sleep at all!!!

IMO Glad your dd is better. Some coughs just seem to last forever, dont they? Ds1 had a cough that lasted from sept til april for his first three years! Raising the mattress/using a pillow might help and sometimes I found a warm drink before bed helped too for some reason. I dont use cough medicine as its now banned for the under 6's and will just supress the cough and therefore prolong it. Could never see getting ds1 to take it anyway! Just seen on the news that airports are opening again so at least your dh will be back x

Toby is shifting his nap time too I think which is a real bind as I have just shelled out £100 for a term of swimming lessons at 2pm on mondays and if he moves his nap to the afternoon I will have wasted all that money and ds1 will have to do his work in the afternoons too...humph.

Got some quotes in for the work on the house. Windows and doors ordered - only £11k! £4k to have all the walls and ceilings re skimmed (we have the dreaded artex on most of our ceilings at the moment) and a complete redecoration. Good news is we dont need a re-wire (thank god!) but British Gas are coming tomorrow to give me a quote on the new boiler....oh dear.

Hope all are well (even if some are a bit poxy!)

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/05/2010 12:53

I second a pillow for a cough. It seemed to help ds when he had a cough that lasted a couple of months.

Funnily enough I was speaking to my friend about cough medicines (she's a pharmacist) and she said not to bother with them as they are a waste of money, and tbh I agree with her. Whenever I've used one they've made no difference at all.

IOM - I raise you a dead vole with a dead blackbird, a dead mouse and cat vomit on our patio this morning. I mean, good lord, no one should have to deal with that before 8 in the morning!

OP posts:
DastardlyandSmugly · 10/05/2010 13:31

When were they banned? I asked the pharmacist what she could have and he gave me this stuff. It might not have 'cured' the cough but it certainly helped her sleep better.
