A brand spanking new thread where we can chat about the state of our eggs, SWI, our veg patches and any other topic we fancy

I don't know for sure, but some were banned for under 2's about 2 years ago I think. It's only some though, one's with sedatives etc in - which is why they help them sleep better.

Other cough syrups have things like glycerine in, so they're ok for little ones. However they only ease a sore throat for about 10 seconds, they won't actually do anything to help with a cough.

Lovely pics btw Dastardly. I need a holiday.

IMO & ILTMIMI I'm so glad we don't have a cat! The (half) dead animals are something I could live without.

becaroo ouch x 100 at having to have your jaw broken to get your wisdom teeth out. I've only had one taken out and they don't want to mess with the others . It feels better today, although I have drugged myself up with sudafed in the day and night nurse at bedtime.

Better get organised, the dc's are out so I have a list of things to do in peace.

digitalgirl · 10/05/2010 14:10

Lovely pics D&S they seem so grown up now don't they?

We had a lovely weekend not doing ANY moving stuff. DH had Sat off work too so was a double bonus. Went to the Real Food Festival yesterday which was full of yummy samples. DS loved it, just has this habit of wanting to take off into the nearest crowd.

carrie how goes the extension plans? I want to get started on 'planning' ours. Not in a position to pay for it yet, so planning is as far as we can go.

Has anyone ever built on top of an extension?

DS now sleeps 8-6/7. And has an hour or more during the day. He was quite religiously napping in the late morning, but now seems to be holding out till 12 (which buggers up lunch and he ends up eating at 2) or sometimes after lunch. So seems a few of us are dealing with changing nap times.

DebiTheScot · 10/05/2010 14:13

DS2 has a cold too. He's had it on and off for months too and I'm sure it's just viral but am going to take him to doc tomorrow mainly to get the childminder off my back. If she tells me 1 more time that green snot means infection and therefore he needs antibiotics I might scream.
We had the same crying thing last night as you had iom. There didn't seem to be anything wrong that we could fix and he wasn't properly waking up but it was horrible listening to him and it kept us awake. Tried to give him some calpol but he is VERY hard to get medicine into.

The cough medicines that are banned are the 1s that are proper medicine. The soothing glycerine, honey etc ones are ok but I agree with D&S and ILTMIMI that they don't do anyhting anyway.

imoscarsmum · 10/05/2010 15:15

She has a pillow but keeps moving off it and rolling onto her back and coughing. I use snuffle babe on her chest and olbas oil on a tissue by her cot. Have also heard vicks rubbed onto feet helps!!

As to cough medicine, totally agree re glycerine giving short relief to lubricate throat and cough medicine doesn't actually work unless it's strong stuff (and even then it's debatable). The baby glycerine stuff just went straight through C when she was tiny so won't bother with that.

It's a difficult one though as Buttercup does provide some relief for her. It's not for under 2s as it has a tiny bit of alcohol in it (why it's OK for over 2s in that case I don't know!) and I'm hoping it'll just lubricate a bit better and stick a bit, IFSWIM, to help reduce irritation. I give her a tiny amount. I'm not really bothered that C's not 2 - they have to guard against the parents who would use it all the time.

CappuccinoCarrie · 10/05/2010 15:20

It was 'medised' that was banned - calpol is fine but the sedetive bit is not licensed for under 6s any more after some muppets in the US overdosed their kids who then died We used medised for dd when we took her on a long haul flight!

debi if green snot means antibiotics then mine would be permenantly on them!

I know 15 people expecting babies in May - July and the first had theirs today, a girl called Charlotte. I'm SO broody! But i don't have time to give head space to that any more because...the extension starts on Monday!!!!!!!! We've got £1500 off the price by saying we'll paint it ourselves (we got them to quote for absolutely everything but that's obviously the first thing to go) and the builder is a joiner on first name terms with the people who run our favourite kitchen shop, so he'll come with us to choose the kitchen and then get trade price, so that's a LOT more money saved, woop woop!

mamamuffin · 10/05/2010 16:05

Hi guys, just swinging by. I am dashing to make tea and take ds1 to swimming lessons but will be back soon. It looks like the pox has arrived here. Only small red spots but plenty of them! The ones on the hand area have blistered. Not sure if it is though . Any advice Poxycarrie

Debs75 · 10/05/2010 16:21

I don't believe in cough medicine either. One Dr said to me chesty cough medicine would only work if they actually got into your lungs and then they would kill you. With kids cough medicines it is the fact they are having medicine which 'cures' them. Something we realised with DS (who is autistic) when he never seemed to get better with cough meds and was the same when he didn't take them.
I do like the soothing syrups as they stop the throat getting too sore.

Debi My mum would always say if your snot was green you needed antibiotics but Dr told me it is old snot which goes green so if you just jave a cold for a week then the snot goes green.
Maybe your CM just has an issue with snot.

watching Countdown everyday is paying off. Robyn can recognise A, D, E, I, N, O, S and T and will happily say them when we point them out.
Where is the 'my child is a genius' smiley?

imoscarsmum · 10/05/2010 16:23

Carrie some of my mum friends with older kids swore by Medised and mourned its passing!

Keep everything crossed. DP at airport, so far so good.

ninja · 10/05/2010 16:36

Oh and I have a great solution for asleep but crying babies ....

Earplugs

DastardlyandSmugly · 10/05/2010 16:40

I have to reiterate that the medicine did make her sleep better and it was one that was specifically for her age group as I asked the chemist. I guess the soothing effect just helped her settle down better and this seemed to last through the night.

Thanks re. pics. It was a lovely holiday.

CappuccinoCarrie · 10/05/2010 16:54

mama are you sure is not hand foot and mouth? Pox generally starts on the torso and moves up to the face then arms and legs over the next three to four days. The blisters are a bit more yellow than the h,f&m blisters too.

To relieve itching get calamine cream, not lotion, and put oats in a pair of tights in the bath to let them infuse, or use bicarb of soda. I'm dosing ds up with piriton and calpol. He's been asleep for 3.5hours . And best chum took dd out for a babyccino so I'm home without having to entertain a child, I hardly know what to do with myself!!

Hi star How are you and the little ones?

ninja · 10/05/2010 18:31

Debs that is AMAZING - is it normal?? Is that where I went wrong with DD1?

Mind you maybe I should just be satisfied with the fact that M can climb the 10ft scramble net at the park when my back's turned

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/05/2010 18:50

Digi - dh is a builder so if you have some questions about building on top of an extension, fire away. I should imagine the big potential problems would be the depth of the foundations and the roof structure of the extension - more so the foundations I suspect.

Waves at Starlight. Come back and tell us how you are.

Debs - the Countdown thing really makes me chuckle. I think you do have a child genius!

Hi Star...lovely to hear from you. Great news about your ds and dd I do wonder about Toby sometimes as everyone elses baby seems to be talking and generally about ready to join mensa, but he is quite content to sit and look at books with me, play (i.e. hit) his big bro and generally run around like a loon ooh, he is lovely!

Star - I sympathise with your situation re: dh. Dh and I went through a rocky patch before xmas and things still arent 100% but we are going to try and spend more childfree time together which I think will help. I think a lot of it is my fault tbh, after all day with the dc and especially with home schooling ds1 when he gets home I just want some time to myself and help round the house which is not fair as he has been at work all day too. Its difficult.

Blimey...all these poxy children!! (if you'll pardon the phrase) Hope they all get over it soon. We found tepid (not warm) baths helped. x

Meglet · 10/05/2010 20:23

Hello SM . So pleased to hear the dc's are well and I hope your DH bucks his ideas up soon.

debs I can't say that DD is a budding child genius, not sure if cbeebies and sky news are that educational . Although I did buy this book from the parlimentary book shop the other week and have been reading it to 3.5yo DS at bedtime. What do you mean PFB-ish? .

A little update from me as I haven't mentioned it lately in case any of you were wondering...

XP hasn't seen the kids since last July, he refused to attend the contact centre but does pay maintenance. And at the moment he keeps e-mailing my mum to ask why he can't see the kids, he would be more likely to win an argument with Alistair Campbell than my mum . If he wants to see them he has to go with his tail between his legs to the contact centre. I've had enough of him, heaven knows if he will see the kids again. He hasn't calmed down at all so I would not want him in charge of the dc's without being supervised.

mamamuffin · 10/05/2010 20:26

I too can sympathise with your situation re: Dh. I am a massive nag and really cant help it. I also and sound just like you wanting time to myself becaroo. I think its a constant battle getting the balance right with everthing but we are trying.
Thanks carrie yes euans rash is mostly legs and arms hands and feet now. I has not thought of hand foot and mouth. Its spreading rapidly. He is a bit hot and more cuddly than usual but otherwise ok. Only a few of the spots have blistered. Its all very odd. Dh has just taken him to out of hours as some of the spots stay under glass. I know he is too well in himself to be anything serious (so am not too worried} but we are just getting him checked out. I have had to stay with ds1 in bed.

mamamuffin · 10/05/2010 20:29

Hi meg sorry x posts. I am sorry your Xp is still being a T**T. I think your amazing doing it all yourself x

mamamuffin · 10/05/2010 20:30

IL2MIMI Whats your dc rash??

mamamuffin · 10/05/2010 20:33

Oh husband just phoned. Its hand foot and mouth!!!! carrie you need to re train !.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 10/05/2010 21:40

It's either chicken pox or a small reaction to something. I'll find out in the morning I guess. I don't think we've been in contact with the pox but you never really know do you?

Good news about your ds Starlight. I can see how things would have changed with yours and your dh relationship, but it's great that you're addressing it.

Glad it's only h,f&m Mama.

I think I need to read that book meglet All this election farce it getting right on my nerves. What a bloody shower.

Such a shame for the kids that your ex hasn't bucked up his idea's. Let's hope he see's the light some time soon.

dastardly - It looks like we've been ganging up on you and the whole medicine thing, but I know that wasn't anyone's intention. I hope we haven't upset or offended you.
