A brand spanking new thread where we can chat about the state of our eggs, SWI, our veg patches and any other topic we fancy

Carrie I have been thinking about a balance bike for Robyn, are they really that good?
Let us know how the room sharing is doing as when we finally move Robyn will share with the baby. We've never had any sharing before, apart from with us.

notcitrus · 18/07/2010 21:52

Back from IoW - mostly good weather, ds and dn shared a room and chatted and giggled into the night like a pair of teenage girls! They were still going at 11pm the first night but by the final night were leaping back down as soon as any of us entered the room, pretending they'd been asleep, then collapsing into more giggles as soon as I left. Although a couple times A was 'reading' his Mr Men book with a 'wasn't me making the noise' expression!

Sand a hit, sea scary, lots of pointing at fish and boats but the best bit was running round the house and jumping in and out of all the cupboards and pointing at dogs going past in the street. One dog then got in a car and drove off and A is still telling me Doggie! Car! Car gone doggie! a week later...

What's a balance bike?

ninja · 18/07/2010 22:18

I've already decided I'm getting M a balance bike as DD1 (7) is only just learning to ride her bike without stabilizers!

M can already ride a tricycle and a scooter so I think she'll love it.

In Ireland with the inlaws and been out on the lake today, down to the beach tomorrow.

CappuccinoCarrie · 19/07/2010 14:44

Balance bike is a bike with no pedals, breaks, gears. Kids sit on it and scoot along with their feet. Gradually they build up speed and lift their feet up to coast so they learn perfect balance without any idea that that's what they're doing. Then when they grow out of it you get them a pedal bike and off they go, no stabilisers! I'm trying to remember how old DD was when she really got the hang of her balance bike (she just used to stand astride it and walk to start with!) but I think it was before she was 2 1/2, so I'd recommend getting one for their second birthday/this christmas rather than waiting til 3rd birthday. Some kids aren't remotely interested of course, they're all into different stuff, but quite physical children may well be up for it. THere are some cheap ones on the market but they're quite heavy and clunky (for example tesco has a £25 one). You need one that goes easily and smoothly so the kids can really get going and have a chance to learn the balance. Also there are different sizes, some only start for 4 year olds, so get the right one!

There's this one where you take the pedals off for learning, then put them on, but I don't know how good it is. Lots of my friends kids have this one. DD has this one but my dad only paid about £50, not sure where from, certainly not that site!

Feeling very very pre menstrual

mamamuffin · 19/07/2010 19:34

Bookmarking. Hi everyone.
A balance bike it is then. A genious idea! x

CappuccinoCarrie · 19/07/2010 22:20

Royally shot myself in the foot today. Told DD if she weed in her pants we'd leave the soft play and go straight home. Guess who had to follow through on the threat at the point where DS had some lunch in him and was finally starting to enjoy himself

I think DS might be colour blind. He pretty much knows all his colours but rarely gets red right (although he often knows green). How early can you tell this, how do they officially diagnose, other than not being a fighter pilot what are the implications, and is it really possible given that no one in the family is colour blind?

mamamuffin · 20/07/2010 18:00

Hi there

Where is everyone?????

What soft play area was it carrie ???

I have just asked my husband who used to work with eyes He says colour blindness is not easy to test in a toddler and that people dont bother as there is nothing you can do anyway. nil implications for a toddler. I think its clever he is getting some colours right. E has absolutely no ideas. We do have 5 words now

We need a mumsnet i phone app sooooooooonn xx

CappuccinoCarrie · 20/07/2010 19:19

Went to creepies mama. I love it there!

I need an iphone before I can get any apps for it!

Thank you for the helpful advice re colour blindness

Seriously, where is everyone though?!

AF a day late...but it was a day late last month too so I'm not getting my hopes up (much). It would all just be too perfect to get a bfp and be able to cancel my horrid gynae appt on monday!

ninja · 20/07/2010 22:45

crossing my fingers carrie (while also thinking you're mad to be wanting another )

I'm in Ireland (did I say that already?)

No colours here either - well she has her yellow shoes and purple shoes but I don't think she really knows what they mean.

I need an i-phone (or ipad ) too

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 21/07/2010 12:48

I would like an I-phone but I know it would be totally wasted on me as all I do is text.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Carrie.

DS knows blue and maybe red, but I think he only knows red because I ask him to go and get his red shoes.

I feel knackered at the moment and like I need a holiday. However I have to wait until September for that. I think it's the heat making me tired and grumpy, much like ds ereally!!

Hey guys!

Haven't been here for aaages. Have been quietly turning into Bridezilla, and am trying not inflict it on too many people

We've booked a photographer this dude. He was absolutely lovely when I met him the other day. He is, however, the only thing we've booked! We're going camping tomorrow and I'm taking the number of the registry office with me so I can phone and make sure we can actually get married on that day! Marquee is semi-hired (have quote, just haven't confirmed which sized tent we want), but am having a colour scheme melt down! Will probably blog next week about it, then i will point all you clever ladies in the direction of my blog and force you to offer your opinions. It's amazing how organised you have to be to have a wedding in peak wedding season (next July).

Am still unsure on making dress - it depends entirely on the pregnancy/baby situation really (although have already picked the fabric...). AF is due in 2 days, and if it's another BFN this month then DP and I have to really sit down and decide whether to stop TTC for a few months to avoid risking the teeny weeny newborn situation when we get married. In the hugely unlikely event that I fell pregnant this month, we'd have a 3 month old by the wedding, which seems manageable.

TBH, I'm really feeling like I can't imagine actually getting pregnant, and if I do I'll just be sitting there waiting for it to go wrong instead of enjoying it. Can't believe we conceived DS first time, and we've been trying for 8 months so far...

CappuccinoCarrie · 22/07/2010 09:31

Hi hopefully I've been wondering how you're getting on coz I know from last month that our cycles are only a couple of days apart. Wedding sounds sooooo exciting! Can't wait to start talking colour schemes with you

AF was due on Tuesday and still no sign, but I still feel very very pre-menstrual. I've had lots of cramps and aches and (TMI) a bit of brown discharge which usually precedes my period so I'm fully expecting AF to arrive today. But if by tonight it hasn't come I'll be starting to get my hopes up in a major way! I'm not a POAS addict as I just can't face seeing negatives, so I wouldn't go and buy a test until I'm sufficiently convinced. One weird thing is that I could squeeze colostrum out of my boobs last night, which I haven't been able to do since giving up bf over a year ago. However the internet tells me this isn't a sign of being pg and is general hormones, or a sign that something's wrong (oh hooray).

I'll be back later!

Hopefully · 22/07/2010 11:23

Cough(I-just-got-a-BFP)cough.

We're off camping for a few days, keep your fingers crossed that i'm still PG when we return...

FannyPriceless · 22/07/2010 12:03

hopefully Squeeeeeee!!!! What fab news! So where will that leave you on the big wedding day?

Now maybe carrie will catch the same train? Carrie, I agree avoid testing until AF is definitely late. It's horrible getting BFPs. Especially the ones with words that say stuff like 'of course you're not pregnant you stupid cow why did you even bother testing?' or something to that effect.

Am having a catch up and will come back soon.

ninja · 22/07/2010 12:04

a quiet hooray and congratulations - YIPPEEEEE!

ninja · 22/07/2010 12:05

a 3 month old should be ok - knows the difference between day and night but still sleepng lots (well maybe)

FannyPriceless · 22/07/2010 12:06

Ah, sorry, I see you answered that.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 22/07/2010 12:42

Oh lordy, so much has happened in so few posts. I don't know what to say first!!

I'm like this at your news Hopefully. And I don't mean the photographer being booked - although that is exciting too!

What date are you going for? My anniv is on the 30th.

I have got my fingers firmly crossed for you Carrie. I'm hoping Sod's Law is on your side and that you won't need to go to your appt.

My period is also due any day now, do you think that because we've been on this thread for 2 years (2 years!) our cycles have become in sync??!!!

How are you all doing Fanny? How's it going and has your spd gone?

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 22/07/2010 13:13

hopefully and good luck. Enjoy camping too. Where are you going? Let us know how camping with a toddler goes, we've just bought a tent and are hoping to go for a couple of nights this summer.

There's a lovely wedding dress in the window of the shop by me that made me think of you hopefully when I saw it. It's dark green (I know you said you were thinking pale blue) but it's got an ivory layer under it and there's a small triangle at the top and then down the front where you can see the ivory (shocking description sorry) so it still looks like a wedding dress but isn't white or meringuey.

My anniversary is the 30th July too!

CappuccinoCarrie · 22/07/2010 19:42

Huge congratulations hopefully! 3 month olds are great, past the newborn stage but still very portable. What an exciting year its going to be for you

Well I got a bfn but still no AF. I got one of the "of course you're not pregnant you stupid cow why did you even bother testing?" (LMAO fanny!) tests. What a waste of a tenner

CappuccinoCarrie · 22/07/2010 20:07

I've just wasted a lot of time researching whether or not I could have had a false negative. With my previous pregnancies I've had very quick positive results so I'm inclined to believe the bFn

No chocolate in the house, what to do...hot chocolate will have to do.

FannyPriceless · 22/07/2010 20:46

Ah carrie, while there's still no AF there's still hope. Who knows?

ILTMIMI Hi! Things are going pretty well, but I'm still not up to looking after both kids solo yet. Luckily DS is really easy so we are very lucky. DD is definitely the loudest cryer in this house! Sometimes DS gives me a look when DD is screaming the house down as though to say 'what is she making such a fuss about?'

DS is quite different to DD. He is thriving and way up the high end of the growth and height charts already. He is a very assertive feeder!

The SPD is calming down but still a bit of a pain (har, har). I have my first post natal check with the physio tomorrow so that will be interesting.

carrie We are keen on a balance bike. When we were on holiday in France last year we saw a family cycling through the woods and the youngest girl had a balance bike - it looked amazing! We stopped them and asked them about it (in our not very brilliant French) and it was actually a British brand. Not sure we've got the budget for it at the mo as I recall it was about £100. Unless anyone has a cheaper recommendation?

When will you be back in your house?

CappuccinoCarrie · 22/07/2010 20:58

We visited the house again today, its looking really good but due to some issues with the bulkhead for the stairs its running a couple of days behind schedule. We were going to be moving back on Sat 31st, but my best friend goes on holiday that day so we've decided to move into her house for the week - we've been out for 5 weeks so why not make it 6?! It means we won't have to live with the builders in the house at all, they'll have completely finished by the time we move back. The actual finish date might not be late, but the fitting of the kitchen will be, and that is what matters!! We might even get a babysitter towards the end of that last week and go and give the house a proper clean and put stuff in the new kitchen cupboards so by the time we're back there with the kids we can move right back to a fully functioning house. They've been plasterboarding which has made the house feel smaller again as the walls are closing in a bit, but its still so full of builders' clutter that its hard to really tell. I've bought some tester pots of paint to start thinking about what colour of 'not quite white' to do the main dining and snug area. It needs to be calm and inviting, but also fresh. Need to find the right shade of sage green for the kitchen too. At least its something to distract me from the bfn. Can't believe I broke my own rule of not testing til I'm 4 days late.

Debs75 · 22/07/2010 21:01

Hopefully Congratulations.

Fanny just look what you have started that makes 5 or is it 6 of us who got pregnant again. It will happen for you too Carrie. Remember you have a lot of stress on atm with the extension and gynae worries. When you get back into your house things should be easier and less stressful.

Robyn has passed me her cold so I feel rotten atm. Need a rest but the kids break off tomorrow and I still have loads to do. 6 long weeks of fun, fun, fun

Kagey · 22/07/2010 21:07

Congratulations Hopefully and fingers crossed for Carrie!

That's good news Fanny that your DS is feeding well

I had my GP appointment on Monday, and so hopefully I will hear from a Midwife soon - every little twinge gets me worried, much more so than with DD, but I guess I will not be able to relax until September.
