Hello new thread! Am recovering from love bite style scratches on my neck from the baby and his talons. He is into pinching now little monster. Anyway I guess we are discarding the old thread now so thought I'd post a hi on this one.

Got some tablets from the docs today - hmm.

ThePenguinProject · 08/10/2008 17:28

I NEED SLEEP! Teething powders, new teething dummies and new teething ring no help. . It's the bonjela next....

Amber - How did the docs go?

ThePenguinProject · 08/10/2008 17:30

X post. Re: talons, I look like I met Freddie Kuger down a dark alley.

Essie3 · 08/10/2008 17:46

Yeah, I'm also considering teething powders, because nothing else helps. Iestyn's been awful all day and in fact is starting off now so I'll keep typing until the volume is really high.

Scratching and pinching - this morning, Iestyn grabbed a handful of the skin on my elbow, as a lovely reminder that it's a bit saggy and loose there...so cruel! It will be the jelly belly next but he'll need both hands!

Nope, got to go!

Like the new title thanks UDC and Essie.

We have had a few nights that haven't been so good this week too. The net effect is that I have been feeling like a rubbish Mum when all efforts to sooth/feed/send Peter to sleep have failed. Rationally I know it is because I am tired but it is hard to remember that when there is a wailing baby next to you I find.

My brief supermum moment came yesterday when I managed to get a smear test done despite Peter's best efforts to put me off. I have always found them to be a cringey almost painful experience. Sadly childbirth has not changed anything or even put it into perspective.

I have also taken the rash step of sacking my cleaner. Possibly a mistake, but she has been driving me nuts all summer! I am going to try to do it myself from
now on but may bail out and find someone cheaper if I prove to be too much of a Sloven.

Bit of an egocentric post. Feeling a bit sorry for myself this week. Pilates tonight so that should make me feel a bit better.

We have all our money in Iceland too. Doh! At least there is some kind of compensation scheme and there isn't that much to lose anyway.

alipalli · 08/10/2008 17:50

Clearly I mean Icelandic banks, I am not some kind of Kerry Catona wannabe.

Essie3 · 08/10/2008 18:12

Hahaha, shares in Iceland might be better than Icelanding banks by now. All those party platters.

I still haven't had my smear. Thanks for the reminder (not!) Ali.

Sorry thing are a bit rubbish AliP. Very brave of you to sack your cleaner.

Ryder has just gone to sleep now that DH has got in the door - my little boy is taking the p! He hasn't slept all day. Neither have I, when I really needed to after feeding from 1-2am, then being woken at 3am, 4am, 5am and 6am. I got up at 6am in the end.

Looks like a take away tonight, both of us too tired to cook. Dare I risk Indian?

Yay on the interest rate cut.

Smear result came thru clear for me, which is the first time in years and years. I am so used to colonoscopys and biopsies the result actually came as a complete shock. In a good way, obviously.

hedgehog1979 · 08/10/2008 19:22

Loving the new title, just marking this to get it on my threads though, nothing to report here.

Amberc · 08/10/2008 19:49

Hi PP - docs was OK - they have given me anti anxiety tablets which I take at night so we'll see how I get on.

Luke seemed to get on well with the teething powders. He likes the taste - they are lactulose based so quite sweet. God alone knows what's in it. I could make a few bob selling those at the local discotheek though!!

Just made fried fish for dinner and trying to do the bottles at the same time have boiling oil all up my arm and it hurts like hell.

Am so with the bad sleepers except for last night of course where he went right through as the night nanny was here . I am praying it won't happen again for a bit as it can take months for a tooth to come through.

poppy34 · 08/10/2008 19:56

amberc good luck with drugs and sympathies re the wolf scratches/burn.. hope you get good night tonight (And PP)... have some lovely goudges on my neck/face

alipalli -sorry to hear that you are having pants time... hope pilates sorts you out... and lol at kerry katona reference.

edie had afternoon with grandma that both seemed to love - has been very good all day incl going down at 7 (in fact fell asleep on bottle)...hope this means a good night

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/10/2008 20:40

just adding to list

whinegums · 08/10/2008 20:45

Hi again, thanks for all the comments on sleep, so glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Laura, I was wondering where you were. I'm away again next week, but would love to see you (for cake!) soon.

5gomad, ta for swimming advice, seems like the car seat is the way forward, and hope I can find somewhere to leave it while we swim.

Yes, I wish I had my money in Iceland rather than their sodding banks. It sounds like we won't lose the money, and we didn't put much in anyway, but might be a pain doing the claim. Ho hum, what with redundancy and now this, it's time the financial fairies sent some happy dust I think.

Nothing else to report here. No news is good news!

hedgehog1979 · 08/10/2008 21:06

whinegums re swimming, our baths has baby changing tables so I strap him on there after he is changed and get me done. Would recommend taking a big towelling dressing gown if you have one as i get out of the pool put that on and can wrap isaac in it with me, we can then shower, and wrap back up in it. Keeps me warm while I am dressing him and dries me at the same time. Isaac loves swimming and it seems to tire him so he falls asleep on the changing table meaning I get a lovely peaceful coffee afterwards as well. I have noticed that people take their pushchairs into our (unisex) changing rooms and leave them in a special area - maybe worth ringing the pool and seeing what their etiquette is?

poppy34 · 08/10/2008 21:40

ok what does everyone do/think re changing bags? I've got a big black messenger bag (chosen by dh as it was manly) and its a pita - its so uncomfy to carry that I get shoulder ache /bruising every time I do so tend to use the cheapy boots one instead (this is all right but can see the stitching starting to go).

anyone got any recommendations - having spent 2 days with stiff shoulders due to changing bag have finally decided may buy my own (dh can carry "his"bag if he likes it so much )

Upsidedowncake · 08/10/2008 22:13

Hi there

Penguin, sorry about the crap night and crap day. And sorry I missed you yesterday. I was really looking forward to seeing you. Do you think it is teeth? Great news on smear test result.

Amber, hope the pills sort you out. I really do sympathise. Are they diazepam or something more modern? Sympathies re burn - I bet that hurts.

Glad you all like the thread title

We are going to a wedding this weekend to which we can bring C and D for the reception but they have to leave at 730. have been so busy organising babysitter, that when a friend asked 'what are you wearing?', I realised I literally have nothing to wear that fits my front. (and Essie can testify, it ain't small!) What am I going to do? It's a black tie dinner dance.

poppy34 · 08/10/2008 22:15

anything halter neck or could you dig out something nice from maternity stuff as that can be more generously cut.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/10/2008 22:17

Poppy i treated myself to a yummy mummy bag from pink lining here I actually use a changing bag this time round

alipalli · 08/10/2008 23:23

pleased about your smear result pp. Hope you have a better night tonight. I do understand the pain of a baby that is awake all day too.

Amber hope the pills help

Poppy its nice to hear about someone having a good day for a change; nice that Edie and her gran enjoyed themselves.

Pilates was most excellent. I always feel as though I have had a massage afterwards - cheaper too! I would recommend. I came home to a rather glum and tired looking peter and DH. P had woken up soon after I had left and has only just got back to sleep. I failed to shave my legs in the shower as a result of wailing (from DH as much as P) so I now have v hairy legs for the second week in a row and the prospect of baby swimming tomorrow! My goal tomorrow am is address this sorry state of affairs.

Night all

alipalli · 09/10/2008 08:41

Morning! Where are you all.

We had a much better night. Woken once at 5, and then Peter didn't wake at 6.30 which meant that DH overslept and missed his train. Moral of the story: babies should not be used as alarm clocks.

fungle · 09/10/2008 10:08

Morning, another crappy night here Once again Whinegums, I think our babies are twins It's the early morning waking and not really going back to sleep that kills me. Kinda been awake since 4ish, up properly at 6. Makes the day sooo long. Just making some yummy roast butternut squash soup while LO is finally having a power nap. Going to dye my hair today too I think, need a bit of a spruce up as we are off on hols to St Ives this weekend, cant wait! Although a little nervous, will be LO's first time in travel cot.
Poppy, I treated myself to a Oioi change bag which fits nicely over my pram, I love it!
We are going to have our first swim this weekend, most leisure centres are quite well kitted out for prams etc and have change tables Whinegums.
Crying has begun after 35 mins, so not long enough, will try get her to go back for a bit longer, sounds cross so obviously still very tired.

Parofleurmapu · 09/10/2008 10:25

Morniing

Better night here gave fleur some calpol which helped with temp and helped her to sleep a bit better

Question: can you put vicks vapour drops in boiling water in a room where the baby is or are they not good for little ones?

Poppy - i bought this the other day for when im out and about on my own as find two bags difficult and its fab reeally lightweight and fun denim bag

PP glad smear ok , you reminded me i need one done too but thinking bout going somewhere else for it as my gine didnt do good job re infections which werent etc

Hehe ali glad peter had better night , my DP done this once too!!

UDC im gifted in that area too!!! can you buy something if so do you have a Bravissimo near you? they do tops good price could be teamed with nice trousers and dresses too

TJuice · 09/10/2008 11:08

hi all

its been a while since i posted here but i am a frequent lurker. Elodie was born on 3rd june but was almost a month early, so i lurk between this thread and the july thread and she really is in between in terms of development compared to babies on both threads.

but had to pitch in because she is also sleeping quite badly at a point where i thought she would be going through the night! right now she is being bounced on my knee as i type as she seems to have to be with me all the time right now - its horribly draining.

fungle - you LO may love the travel cot - mine slept through in the travel cot at my parents place when i was over in the uk recently.

pleasechange · 09/10/2008 14:24

Hi TJuice and welcome back! Also welcome back Laura - I noticed you weren't around, as you were one of the 'late' bunch back in June!

fungle have a lovely time in St Ives. Am as I love it there

alipalli and whinegums I also have money in Icesave - stupidly this is where I had all my savings for maternity, so now I have no money to live on . We are relying on family loans until we get it back again. Looking on the FSCS website today it looks like they're trying to get it sorted quickly (I'm hoping that as this is the first high profile case, they will do it fast to give confidence in the scheme)

bdq welcome back. I think it was you asking about what to wear on baby in pram. I don't use a pramsuit or a footmuff yet. A is currently wearing a warm coat over 2 layers, and a blanket over his lower half. This seems cosy for now, and I'll switch to the footmuff when it gets colder

Has anyone heard of a Doidy cup? I was given one today at the BF cafe. Apparently they're recommending them here now after bf instead of topped cups or bottles. It's basically a slanty cup without a lid, and it's to encourage baby to lap at the milk direct from the cup, leading to drinking themselves. A laps well from a spoon, so I'm going to try the cup (can use from 3 months)

Had a strange visit to the docs on Tues. When A was having his injections, the doc advised that any baby under 6 mths that is exclusively bf may not be getting enough iron as bm is low in iron. He told me to give A iron supplements. I was very and a bit upset that I'd been denying A iron all this time. Having asked HV, bf cafe workers and on the bf forum here though, everyone seems to think this is a load of nonsense.

Sorry for the long post - haven't posted in a week!

Upsidedowncake · 09/10/2008 16:50

Hi

V briefly as DS is having supper and DD is having a nap.

Re iron, some Health professionals recommend iron supplements if exclusively bfing after six months (including the Department of Health), but not before as baby should have reserves and bmilk contains some (easily digested) iron. (Can you tell I used to write health leaflets for the Department of Health?)

My own (entirely unprofessional) view is that people have been bfing for gazillions of years and never needed iron supplements even after six months so why should we start now? But what do I know????
