Seeing as it's a quiet time...

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/10/2008 20:59

needahand do you have to tell her?

poppy34 · 14/10/2008 21:02

needahand do you have to see HV - am with 5gomad that don't have to tell her ... franly my dead gran had more useful advice than the one I spoke to ...

sponge am so with you re school sports - its amazing I ever did anythign fitness related again thanks to them

goingfor3 · 14/10/2008 21:04

spongebrainbigpants you sound like a lovely teacher - I'm sure there are some out there who would want the children to suffer as they did!

Needahand I would try some fruit or veg. I've never bothered with baby rice and only used it as a thickener if I added to much water to a puree. Ds likes banana, carrots and mango. Avacado and a combo of carrots peas and sweetcorn didn't go down very well! He's still drinking a fair amount of milk though no idea how much as he is still bf.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/10/2008 21:20

sweet potatoe is good and carrots

spongebrainbigpants · 14/10/2008 22:05

thanks GF3, I like to think years of bullying at primary school made me a more sensitive teacher . . . although I'm sure a psychologist could have a field day with why someone who hated primary school so much she used to fake illness to stay away ended up being a primary school teacher!!!!!

debinaustria · 14/10/2008 22:23

Thanks for the messages everyone.Ethan is a little better but still coughing lots. I am burying my head for a while longer with all the weaning talk, but he is very interested in my food now, and every time I took a spoonful of yoghurt, he was opening his mouth so I suppose I will have to get my head out the sand soon!I did get 2 free Hipp jars in the post this morning!

Lovely video Amber

Sponge, sometimes I used to choose those that I knew would have been the last chosen to be the ones choosing (sounds confusing that sentence but I know what I mean)

Sophie - How many presents????? You've inspired me, I think I will try to do some in a couple of weeks as we're on with the decorating again here!!

Hedgehog - how were the jabs?

Laura - you made me laugh about C enjoying nappy free time - kicking her legs about - does she take after anyone in particular?? I have to say Ethan loves it too!

spongebrainbigpants · 14/10/2008 22:35

Deb, no not confusing - know exactly what you mean!

Btw, when are you on the tv? Been following your story (and v about you moving back to Leyburn - we used to live in York, beautiful part of the world) and wanted to watch it. Do you have a date yet?

hedgehog1979 · 15/10/2008 10:20

sponge did give calpol 30 mins before anyway as I googled it. Gave the same advice to a mum who's LO was having her first set.
deb he screamed when the first one went in, but I made the nurse do the next one straight away, rolled him round and let her do the final one so all the shock was all over fairly quickly. Then off to the pub for lunch for me and him and he has been fine.
didn't realise there were so many teachers on here. I have been considering doing the OU PGCE to train, has anyone done it this way, would you recommend it, would it be possible to do it with a LO? Sorry lots of questions but is something that I would really like to do.
amber that vid of Luke is fab
deb also with you on burying head in sand re weaning, Still planning on holding off to christmas day, most of the NCT mums I know are starting now (17 - 20 weeks).
I have also bought most of my christmas presents, need to get my Dad, Bro and DH as well as stuff for Isaac but am making some stuff (knitting) too
Right must go and empty machines (washing and dishwasher), then another funeral (DH's old childminder), and then....BILL BAILEY at Royal Albert Hall tonight

spongebrainbigpants · 15/10/2008 11:32

hedgehog, good to hear the jabs went well

Don't know anything about OU PGCE but how would you get the practical experience? I did a PGCE and it was very hard work - don't know how I would have coped with a LO, but then I know others on the course who did have young children.

However, my first year of teaching was a killer - 70 hr weeks easily. Not easy to manage with young children!

But, don't let me put you off! Loved being a teacher and can't wait to get back in the classroom - go for it!

Amberc · 15/10/2008 11:37

Another night where Luke had no milk for 12 hours. He still woke me up at 11.30 (when DP tried to feed him and he cried!), 1.30, 3.30, and was up at 5.30. He just wanted to be put on his side or a dummy. quicker than a feed but up more times - god giveth with one hand...

Deffo not thinking of weaning yet was going to do it at 17 weeks (this week) but now read another thing which says no sooner than 20 weeks. Will just get everything ready. Is anyone buying a high chair? Any tips?

spongebrainbigpants · 15/10/2008 11:49

Btw, stop rubbing it in about Bill Bailey!!!!

I'm soooooo jealous!

katyjo · 15/10/2008 11:59

Laura Your right I think we need a meeting point, I will also email my phone number just in case we can't find each other.

Sybil That's so nice of you to ask how things are going. I gave up bf altogether about 2 weeks ago (I was only giving one feed a day anyway) She seems much happier and so am I. I know I will always worry that ff is the cause of any rash or infections she gets but we mothers like to bash ourselves over the head about these things! How are you getting on, I seem to remember things were improving for you. I think you are so right about the charts, they should be ripped out of the redbooks and burned. We are so pleased when our children move up the charts but not down, but someone has to be in the bottom centiles that's the way they work.

Hedgehog My sister has just gone back to do teachers training, her youngest started school this year. I think she will find it quite hard but she loves it and she has lots of help close by.

Amber Advice re: highchair, get smallest most compact one possible they are a real pain. I used mine until ds was about 18months and I am dreading having it cluttering up the house again!

katyjo · 15/10/2008 12:01

I'm not weaning yet, Mia still sleeping really well and not really a milk guzzler anyway. She seems really interested in food but I'll wait another month or so if she's happy. I think she is 21 weeks, she will be 5 months on the 24th Oct (next week) I can't believe it!

needahand · 15/10/2008 13:21

Hi everyone. Yep unfortunately I probably have to fess up to the HV as last time I went SJ had lost weight (probably because cold) so he needs to be checked again. At 11.30 today he had a massive tablespoon of baby rice + a big spoon of veggies mixed in it and 7oz..and the wolved the whole lot again.

I think he is ready for veggie and fruits puree. I hope DH won't forget to buy a microwave on the way home, mine died on me this morning and I can't sterilise anything so can't do the purees.

I am on my own with the DCs too and DD is so naughty, she doesn't listen to anything but then she is three so I supposed it is to be expected. She had her first haircut today and looks very cute and very grown up (shame the behaviour isn't!!).

amber I am very tired too, SJ woke up at least 7 times last night (two of which for milk). So next night Lukes wakes you, think you are not alone and that I too am probably in haze by SJ's cot! Re highchair no advice apart from "buy a sturdy one" that is stable as little ones have a habbit of trying to push against the table and you need to be sure the highchair will not fall with the motion. Otherwise, something easy to clean is alway good and depending on your storage space, check if it folds easily.

Debs bless Ethan, it is so sweet he opens his mouth when you eat yogurt. At least it is half of the battle won as he understands that he needs to open his mouth when the spoon approaches

Katjo my DD was fully bf for 4 months and she still has a rash and eczema so I wouldn't worry too much, as you say us mother are too hard on ourselves most of the time.

ErnestTheBavarian · 15/10/2008 13:29

Hi everyone - have to apologise for my adsence. I just can't keep up. I'm hanging round on the German thread, as trying to get sorted here. Started meeting people. dd is great. no teeth yet, not weaning yet - putting that off as long as possible. Hope everyone's ok.

Is there major news? A brief summary would be great if anyone can be bothered

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/10/2008 15:15

Hi Ernest - how did you get on in Switserland.

Summing up - weaning has been the major topic, sleeping, feeding the usual.

debinaustria · 15/10/2008 15:58

Needahand - once I started ds1 and 2 weaning I gave up on the sterilising.

Ernest - great to see you! My news - filmed last week in UK and have decided to go back when we sell the house

Sponge - don't know when it will be on tv, they said nov, dec or jan, ITV at 5.00pm.We should know nearer the time.

Hedgehog - it is very tough when you 1st start teaching but very rewarding, PGCE's are quite intense, I did a 4 year B.Ed.

Manic times here, Ethan still not 100% so clingy, ds2 got the bug, he's sitting on settee with bucket and coughing so much he keeps being sick, ds1 moaning downstairs doing his homework and schoolwork from last week when we were away - I can't believe how much he has to do and also 2 tests this week to work for too, he's been in tears.Dh decorating and I'm going to attempt to make some tea.

wish me luck

Amberc · 15/10/2008 16:10

Katyjo doesn't it seem like yesterday that they were helpless little milk guzzlers that just stared at us or cried. What a change and in so little time. Has made me think that I don't want another one for a couple of years so I can enjoy the one I have while he's little.

Thanks for the advice on chairs - did wonder why they have a recline position for babies to fall asleep. Read some reviews saying it's great for when they fall asleep while feeding. Eh? Luke has gone right off his bumbo which was my idea for feeding. I think he feels very restricted. He can sit up without help on my lap now fairly well but only for a few seconds on the floor.

ErnestTheBavarian · 15/10/2008 16:16

hi 5gmid - switzerland was very emotional - I'm trying not to think about it and not look back., but thanks for asking
How's dorset?

We're coming over to UK for Christmas - not especially looking forward to it, but we said we would....

Are people really weaning already? Is no one waiting till 6 months? I've been sent loads of bottles and packets of food for dd, which I'm a bit at.

Re high chairs if anyone still not got one - I strongly recommend the BabyDan - mine's seen me through all 4 kids and still looks as good as new, easy to clean, adjustable & great value

deb, filming for what? Will you not go back till you've sold? Not being pessimistic, but what if that's eg a year? Have you had any interest yet?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/10/2008 16:29

Dorset is fine, DS is getting baptised this saturday so have just made lasagne for 25 for Friday night, mother has the caterers in on Saturday and a friend is opening up his summer Bistro especially and doing Roast Beef on Sunday.

Ds has bad reflux so although DD was more than ready at 21 weeks, DS won't be.

Glad you are making friends, it is hard moving.

ErnestTheBavarian · 15/10/2008 16:34

hmm, want to get Adele baptised, but couldn't arrange it in UK, and no one could come at Christmas anyway. So might get her 'done' here, but don't know any practising Catholics to ask to be God parent. Wonder what you do when not got any godparents?

Lasagne for Friday, caterers Saturday, Roast beef on Sunday - you having a weekend long extravaganza for 25 people?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/10/2008 16:37

one Godmother coming from Kent plus DH's family, other Godmother coming from Devon, One Godfather from Germany and the other is local, so have to do supper for them and the christening is about 35-40 (mostly family which I have a large one) and the SUnday ios everyone chips in before they go home.

Had to have at least one catholic godparent.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/10/2008 16:40

Plus on the Friday night friends of the godfather from Germany as they haven't seen him since he came back from Iraq ao it adds up really quickly and DH's family expect to be fed.

debinaustria · 15/10/2008 22:51

Ernest - we're going to be on an ITV programme "No place like home", they filmed us here the other weekend then a week in UK. I fully expect to be here at least another year, housing market is quiet in Austria, but I feel better knowing that we have made the decision and you never know someone may see the programme, think what silly fools why are they leaving Austria and come and buy our place - you can dream can't you???

I intend to leave Ethan to wean until 6 months unless I really have to before, as it is so much easier when they are still just on milk isn't it.

I don't have a highchair yet either so will look at Babydan.

Sophie - your weekend sounds like it's going to be hectic, I hope it all goes well, what's your ds wearing for it? You'll have to post a photo afterwards.

Tristan ds2, is having a rough night, I keep having to lay next to him in bed, he's so wheezy , but also quite the drama queen about it!

night all

debinaustria · 16/10/2008 07:30

Just started looking at highchairs - look at this strange looking thing.
