Our first thread on the 'other side'. And may all our soon to be mummies join us in this adventure through the early days of parenthood as we continue to share exciting times.

memphis you are absolutely right, and I'm going to book a massage for next week/ Saturday. That is a whole week away though. Going to do the food shopping by myself later. Not exactly a break, but at least time by myself. Also hoping to get some gardening done tomorrow as I love that and haven't been inclined in recent months, but now itching to get out there. Problem is DH is working today and PIL who I was hoping would look after DS occasionally so I could sleep/nip out to shops/have an hour to myself came round last week and left me with the baby and went out and re-did my compost heap for me which I couldn't have cared less about and rather have done myself anyway! PIL are great, but have gotten the wrong end the stick regarding giving me a hand. Mil said next time she will help me tidy the garden. I'm like no I want to do that! It's my thinking time. Not that I said to her though as she is great and only wants to help. She made a much needed casserole for us last Thursday for example so I don't want to discourage her, just redirect her a bit.

My DBro and Dad have offered to come and look after DS while I do gardening, but unfortunately they have spent yesterday evening/night in A & E as we think Dad had a TIA on Thursday and he's being assessed. He is okay now, but we can't ignore an early sign that could prevent something worse.

Grinningcat · 21/03/2015 10:32

P.s. Anyone have experience of Sainsbury's LO nappies? We have used two this morning. First had a suspected leak,, but DH wasn't certain that DS hadn't had a sneaky wee while his nappy was off. Second was a definite leak. Wondering if there is any point in using them or if I should chuck them. We got them free anyway, but I hate unnecessary waste.

Memphisbelly · 21/03/2015 10:46

grinning with ds Sainsburys leaked so I took the open pack back and swapped it for different brand

GeekyHybrid · 21/03/2015 11:34

grinning you're right about making sure your dad is thoroughly checked out. My dad was a bugger for seeing docs let alone following orders, even after the 1st heart attack. Thanks to a 2nd one Isaac only has one Grandpa, hope your DS proves motivation for your dad to take care of himself. And as for usefulness, both IL's and my mom are being great chocolate fireguards ;-/
The reflux now seems to be making Isaac a fussy eater, keeps coming off the breast, fussing etc. Combined with the above and my cold I'm starting to feel a bit frayed around the edges.

Hope your Dad is OK Grinning, good that he's been checked out.

Feel like I've been doing sit ups in my sleep, sore tummy muscles today, think things are knitting back together! Also had a good look at how small my scar is and how big DS was at birth... I must have been properly yanked about!

Addictedtocustardcreams · 21/03/2015 13:40

grinning hope your dad is ok.
Sympathies to all those with the unhelpful families. My mum is great as she just comes & asks what is needed. However my MIL is coming to "help" today/ tomorrow as DHworking 9-9 both days. She has already put back her arrival time twice. She was going to come at 10am. Think she is now aiming for about 3pm. She always does this, it drives me bonkers!

Bangonthedoor · 21/03/2015 15:30

Really hope your dad is ok grinning.

geeky, is the gaviscon not powder?

LO has been just sleeping and eating today, kind of making me dread tonight Confused

My sister asked me if she could have DD1 for a sleepover tonight. After thinking loads about it I said yes, it kind of just felt weird to say yes as I've only ever had her away for a night if I've needed her to. But I thought id take advantage of the offer.

So with DP at work, I've drawn the curtains and blinds (now looks like a squat!), made a cuppa and put twilight on so I can get my Edward fix Grin also in my pjs so quite happy right now.

tweety89 · 21/03/2015 18:16

I hope your dad is doing ok grinning.
bang with my eldest we were actually happy when she was sleeping during the day as she would sleep "like a baby" throughout the night too! :) The days she was staying awake during the day were the problem as she was very tired and wouldn't settle at night either.

Anyone experienced any bad nappy rash? LO got a bad nappy rash and HV suggested metanium which we have been using for 8-10 days (GP saw him too and arranged to see him again on Weds) but just now DP was changing his nappy and noticed that the rash is now like an open wound with a bit of blood (just a bit).
We took DD to the hospital this afternoon as she slipped and banged her head behind the ear quite badly. Is this another trip to the hospital? :O

Memphisbelly · 21/03/2015 18:23

Tweety if metanium hasn't cleared it in a couple of days it could be thrush? Ds1 used to get it like open woulds and the last nappy before bed I would wash his bum in sink, dry with talc and metanium it and it was loads better by morning.
Egg white painted on is good for forming a barrier too

Grinningcat · 21/03/2015 18:45

Thanks All for your good wishes. Dad is staying in hospital over the weekend for observation and we are going down to visit him tomorrow to keep his spirits up. He is fine atm, but they are concerned that if he has a major stroke then he should be there for immediate treatment. It will be our first major trip out with DS.

On another note DH is changing DS nappy and DS has just pee'd over him twice in the same nappy change. This does seem to happen to DH a lot, but twice is impressive. DS can't half wee! Grin

bang the gaviscon is powder but has to be made into a solution to administer, 15ml worth :-(
Tried the syringe. Didn't work. He just spat it out. We also tried to get him to take gripe water as recommended by a mum at bf group, he responded by projectile vomiting everything he had. Both of us required a change of clothes (bar socks!), a muslin, blanket and cushion cover are in the washing machine. An hour later explosive poo required another change of clothes. Today has not been a good day.

memphis I thought about thrush too. It did clear at the beginning (apart from a very small area just around his bum), but now it seems that we're back to where we were... :( I'll probably ask for an urgent GP app on Monday if it gets worse.
geeky projectile vomiting (or any type of vomiting) has always been my worst nightmare. I think if something like this happens, I'll be throwing up too. I cannot understand how my mum used to do it...

Feels like I'm constantly cleaning/cooking/sterilising/washing clothes-dishes/hoovering/eating. Anyone feeling the same way?

blankfornames · 22/03/2015 07:06

Breastfeeding question...my milk supply at night appears to be lower than during the day. Is this possible or is it at a constant day and night?

Having nightmare night times. Am usually up for 3 hrs stints between feeding and settling back into crib. The settling part is definitely most time consuming. He has to be asleep in your arms around 10 mins to transfer. He'll usually wake though. Now beginning to dread the nights..Angry

blankfornames · 22/03/2015 07:15

Glad you're Dad is doing ok Grinning, he's in the right place

GeekyHybrid · 22/03/2015 07:27

Big sympathy to those who had a bad night. blank I think our milk production does slow in the evening as generally we're knackered, dehydrated etc
And just when I thought things couldn't get worse here, I've now got a burning/bruised/painful breast Sad

Addictedtocustardcreams · 22/03/2015 09:10

geeky that sounds sore- do you think it might be mastitis? Are you feeling ok in yourself?

Grinningcat · 22/03/2015 09:22

That does sound like you might be getting mastitis.

Feel like I'm coming down with something, or maybe just really really run down. Don't mind getting ill/a cold myself, but dreading LO getting one especially at the same time...

GeekyHybrid · 22/03/2015 09:24

addicted I'm 99% certain it is mastitis. With yesterday's gaviscon and vomiting dramatics he didn't feed much or properly all day and I got quite engorged a couple of times and with my cold I didn't have the energy to pump enough etc I kept just waiting for LO to get on with it. Most annoying.

OP posts:
Honeybird · 22/03/2015 09:48

Geeky I've now had mild cases of mastitis three times, and it always gives me a fever which is just rubbish and wipes me out.
Lo had a really really bad evening a couple of days ago and screamed for ages but it hasn't been quite so bad again since then so I'm hoping it was a one-off...
Sometimes I have more milk than others, but I have always just put it down to her having eaten more or less.

freneticfox · 22/03/2015 10:01

Blank - right there with you. Our nights are just getting worse and worse. No idea what we can do :(

Addictedtocustardcreams · 22/03/2015 14:42

geeky if you don't feel like pumping could someone take lo while you have a nice long shower? I got rid of some really hard engorged areas in the shower by standing under the warm water and massaging towards my nipples. Wasn't red/hot yet though so don't know whether that's any help to you. I also squirted milk everywhere so be warned!

Addictedtocustardcreams · 22/03/2015 14:44

After being mean about my MIL yesterday today she has taken DD out for the afternoon & I have had a snooze with DS. Feeling much better for it. Now just need to get the will to get up & sort all the vomit covered washing!

GeekyHybrid · 22/03/2015 15:58

Thanks Addicted, I've just finished my second hot bath of the day Smile Managed to express some for the bottle and some just to shift it. Unfortunately it's too painful to feed LO on that side Sad

We are back from our trip to see Dad in hospital. He is looking very well and was very pleased to see us and especially DS. DS was screaming as we arrived on the ward and I was really worried they not let us in. However his screaming brought all the nurses out to see the baby and were wonderful. I guess they don't see many babies on the stroke ward and quite a few of the other visitors and more able patients were thrilled to see him. Thankfully he was soothed with a bottle and proceeded to sleep through the rest of the visit. Thank God.
