Weaning talks? Ladies, who has been providing these for you as I've not been made aware of any in our area except the extortionate NCT ones.

MissRee · 18/04/2012 12:57

Neither have I YBR. I have seen some Cow & Gate ones advertised but they seem to be mainly oop noorth!

BeeMyBaby · 18/04/2012 13:17

My HV at the GPs did ours for all babies born within mid Nov-Mid Dec, lasting over an hour, but our previous GPs only had a weaning session for everyone 0-10months lasting 20 mins. Interestingly enough of the 5 of us who went, all babies were BF so I think maybe this GP practice is perhaps more hands on with offering support.

LittleMissFlustered · 18/04/2012 13:27

DSM Don't feel crap, all kids aree different and they all react differently. You're doing your best, and if the talk has given you a new direction to take your best in then it can be a positive thing. Stay strong, have a cuppa and draw a line in the sand :)

DSM, pleased to hear Darcie has been referred, will do you all good to work through the issues. Don't give yourself a hard time though, parenting doesn't come with a manual (although some do try!) and all children are different, with varying personality traits which, with all the goodwill in the world, can't be changed! None of us is perfect but we all try our best - and please carry on sharing, especially the tips because I'm sure we will need them in months or years to come!

Day at home today, ironing almost up to date but had to have an interlude because ds is bored/hungry/something... I'm trying not to eat crap all day but tis hard.

Hey Northern, bet mini-chinnie (or mini-chinny?) hid the dummy on purpose, just to amuse him in the small hours!

I'm going to see if ds likes purée carrot and baby rice mix today. He's just learning to swallow instead of pushing out the food with his tongue!

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 18/04/2012 16:17

Thanks ladies, this morning has given me a lot to think about.

YBR My local sure start centre is offering our weaning class.

Well I absolutely enjoyed the weaning class today. Was really practical and I actually made apple & parsnip purée which I can put into the freezer. Also mashed some avocado & banana. Gave us some great tips too. Next week will be making broccoli & sweet potato purée and week 3 talking about BLW can't remember about the following weeks.

mopsytop · 18/04/2012 18:08

YBR it was my local surestart also.

Minimopsy had her third set of jabs today and has been unhappy and crying most of the afternoon. No temp though (yet, last time she got it a bit later on) so should I hold off on the calpol?

Figgygal · 18/04/2012 18:13

Hi all

Exciting day today I joined the iphone brigade today and bought trays from boots (i hate our local £ shop i lasted about 30 seconds looking to see if they had any before had to escape). I dont mind pureeing veg but not sure i can be bothered doing fruit what are the disadvantaged of the pouches you can get other than price?

Lo is sat on my lap watching waybuloo my 1st time experiencing it its bloody awful but unfortunately he seems to like it.

My childminder is coming round later to sign the contract ahead of going back to work on 25th June she hasnt seen him since January have warned her she will need great upper body strength Grin.

OiMissus · 18/04/2012 18:15

YBR I heard about the weaning class at the weigh in clinic. By being nosy. The HV woman was chatting to one mum about activities, when the mum left and she made no effort to talk to me, I went over and asked "what activities?". Found about about weaning talks that I would be invited to... after I'm back in work, so I muscled in on another area's talk.
Today we had jabs, then visited Bennybenbear and Ollie, and we got weighed -17lb 4oz at 18weeks, nicely tracking a line between the 75th and 91st centiles. At benny's we talked about weaning our little ones holistically without salt and sugar but with all hwslthy thkngs, and talked about going running and getting fitter ourselves whilst sampling benny's delicious homemade cupcakes. Then we had our first nursery intro sessions (just a form filling exercise). Then called in a on a colleague/ friend who's due next week with her first for a coffee and a chat (and dropped off packets of maternity pads, nappies, and other bits we didn't use).
All good.
Alistair seems unbothered by jabs. Grin

MissRee · 18/04/2012 18:20

Figgy the Ella's kitchen pouches (they do fruit ones and veg ones) are on offer in sainsbos if that's what you plan on doing. I think it's something silly like 4 for £2.50! I stocked up on some for lazy days/going out.

aethelfleda · 18/04/2012 19:03

Evening!

For those thinking of getting ready made fruit puree, you can buy 4-packs of puree pots that look like yoghurt 4-packs but don't need fridging- hipp organic used to do em along with other brands. They are waay cheaper than Ella's kitchen.

And with no disrespect intended at all:

First child: "my LO will be weaned on natural ingredients, home made purees, all organic, no sugar, biscuits, chocolate or squash."

Second Child: I reckon the jars are fine, it's all the same food realt, and they like the taste. And super-dilute apple juice is probably alright.

Third Child: "Oi, Chanel! Baby's finished his Jammy Dodger, can you chuck him a bit of what's left in your sippy cup?"

aethelfleda · 18/04/2012 19:08

Fruit pots here.

and for those of you doing baby led weaning, these humzinger bars are good: £1.99 for a ten pack, they only contain fruit and are rolled in rice flour to make them non-sticky. My two loved them.

KateM77 · 18/04/2012 19:12

Sorry to go off-topic again, but as aethel's around...DD doesn't seem to have chicken pox (yet) but is covered in a rash all over her torso and limbs. It's been there for a couple of days now, isn't on her face, isn't developing into blisters and she seems fine in herself and has no fever. Is this just a strange coincidence? I appreciate there's only so much you can say without seeing the rash. I think I'll try and get a GP appointment if it's still there in the morning.

MissRee · 18/04/2012 19:22

Kate prob a silly question but just to rule it out, have you changed washing power or fabric softener?

LittleMissFlustered · 18/04/2012 19:24

aethel Your first to third made me laugh, quite an achievement today:)

Tired and wound up today so have eaten all the crap in the world. Got to stay in for a courier pick-up tomorrow so am going to gut the kitchen if Edward will allow. Does housework count as exercise?:/

Right, let the feeding commence. Hope you all have good evenings.

KateM77 · 18/04/2012 19:28

MissRee not a silly question at all, I thought of that myself, but I haven't been using anything new

OiMissus · 18/04/2012 19:52

Today's holistic menu for mum has consisted of: one bowl of rice krispies with added sugar, 2 slices of toast (brown) with butter and jam, 1 cupcake, 1 toasted hot x bun with butter, 3 black coffees with sugar.
I've not christened tea yet, but a bottle of red is " breathing" in readiment.Hmm

aethelfleda · 18/04/2012 20:01

oi, I'm confused: what's holistic about rice krispies?
(I have visions of a bowl of cereal humming mantras whilst divining your chakras)

kate, the minumum time chickenpox takes to come out is two weeks from the exposure as it takes that long to "brew" up. Child is snotty and grotty for a few days before the spots come out. So rash will be something else, see your GP if concerned.
If/when it does come out, pox are first seen usually ln the tummy/back or nappy area, then rapidly come up in lots of diff places in crops over the next few days. Red dots turn into clear small blisters, and there is usually tons of them! Ring your GP rather than just turning up if you aren't sure.

KateM77 · 18/04/2012 20:25

aethel thanks, as ever, for the advice. I'll see where we're at in the morning then

GeeandTee · 18/04/2012 20:43

kate when we were waiting to DS to come out in cpox he got a rash and we thought it was the beginnings of it but his childminder said it didn't look like cpox so we took him to GP (isolated from other patients) and it was slapped cheek. Weird coincidence! He didn't look like his cheek had been slapped either!

I'm not doing BLW strictly but will do a mixture of purees and finger food. Probably just some of whatever DS is having eg DS had beef curry with sweet potato and broccoli mash tonight so would give DD a spoon or two of the mash.

I am drinking my namesake :)

OiMissus · 18/04/2012 20:46

I was being ironic. I meant holistic in the whole/ wholesome/ organic sense (in relation to my weaning, first time parent, wanting the best, etc.), and showing you that my ideal is often far removed from my reality. Wink
My intentions are good. But my wine is better.
(opted for a roasted veg tart, fine green beans and mange tout -sauteed in butter Hmm - which is being washed down rather fabulously with a cotes du Rhone villages. The sweetness of the veg being balanced by the light bitterness of the wine. Parfait, mes cheres amies, parfait!)

msbuggywinkle · 18/04/2012 20:46

aethel And the BLW version...

1st child - weaned on to (carefully cut into chip shapes) organic ripe pears.
2nd child - oops, yes, she is 6mths now. Ermmmmm...here have some of mine.
3rd child - weans self onto hula hoops from the floor.

Spent today with DD1's BFF. Sleep over here [gulp] planned for next week.

MissRee · 18/04/2012 20:47

Need a bit of advice ladies...

A friend of mine is currently in hospital with a kidney infection, gallstones and a blood infection. She's feeling a bit down, understandably. I mentioned to DP that I might go up to the hospital tomorrow to visit. He seems to think it's not appropriate for me to take Freya... I think it's fine.

What say you oh wise MN'ers?

MissRee · 18/04/2012 20:50

I had a lovely coffee with Northern and MiniChinnie* today Grin I do hope they didn't get drowned on the way home in the horrid rain though!

OiMissus · 18/04/2012 21:06

MissRee tis a tough one. When I was admitted overnight with stomach pains (potential gall/kidney stones) when Ali was 5 wks old, the drs/nurses said that he couldn't stay with me as the risk of infection from the ward was too high. Add to that the fear of mrsa... But that was to stay. As a short term visitor, any risk would be considerably less. Maybe call the ward, they may not allow you to bring in young babies, but will certainly be able to offer sound advice.
