Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Unfortunately yes.

What a sad development for a party that was formed over concerns for theenvironment.

They are also calling for the “removal of Palestine Action from the list of proscribed organisations”.

Support for a terrorist organisation.

Activists endorsed the policy motion, but rejected an amendment that had been backed by party leader Zack Polanski.

Polanski said he wanted to see the reference to a single Palestinian state changed, arguing: "I don't believe we as a Green Party of England and Wales, or even the British government, should be deciding what the future settlement looks like."

He had also said he wanted to see the motion amended to specify that it should not be used to discipline Jewish members attending synagogues that consider themselves Zionist.

However, both amendments favoured by Polanski were rejected by Green members.

What a sad day for our society

A single Palestinian state in place of Israel.

From the river to the sea. Isn't that what the chanting has been about?

What the hell is going on? I would have supported the Greens potentially. There is no way im giving my support to a party that wants to end the State of Israel and leave Jews with no home. Displace millions of people. Its obscene.
Its actually insane.

Douglasmummy · 04/10/2026 17:10

Bloody hell. To be honest, Polanski deserves all he gets. He's allowed himself to be used as a human shield for antisemitism within the Green Party. Sadly there are a tiny amount of Jewish people compared to Muslims, and The Greens have gone out of their way to attract the most fundamentalist element of that community. I hope this leads to an exodus of decent people from The Greens. Polanski is the one who did this and he can live with the consequences

I live in a London borough where the council is now controlled by the Greens. This probably means they think they are in with a shout of winning the parliamentary seat. I really hope they knock on the door soon. I need to work out what I will say. I will try to be polite but I'm not going to mince words. Currently they are joint bottom of the list of parties I would vote for, with Reform (who would be wasting their time standing here).

Twiglets1 · 04/10/2026 17:12

I think this is a direction the Greens have been moving in for a while, and Zac has allowed it to happen on his watch.

This is too extreme, even he wanted it watered down.

Yes people on a day out chanting this not knowing what it meant or what river and what sea. Well this is what it means. Not a ' two state solution'. They rejected Polanski's pathetic attempt to put Pandora back in the box and support a two state solution so Green policy is now the elimination of Israel.

Yes. I can't claim to be very well-informed about the Middle East but in the vanishingly likely eventuality that this ever happened you'd have to be mad to stay in the area if you were a woman, a gay man or someone who values free speech and thought. Israel is a long way from being a perfect state but at least it has protections for women's rights and gay rights and it's a democracy. As I understand it, not a single other country in the Middle East can claim that.

Roaminginthegloaming · 04/10/2026 17:14

Disgusting.

moderate · 04/10/2026 17:14

They’ve completely lost the plot.

Leaders, former leaders and MPs speaking against or abstaining.

An amendment designed to protect Jews from sanction-by-association was voted down.

He abstained on the unamended motion though. Coward!

The only comforting thing is that the Green Party will never win a GE with policies like this. Might as well rename it at this point.

I believe that most people in the UK including me are in favour of a 2 state solution and this will not be a popular policy country wide.

What did Hannah Spencer vote? Abstain or did she vote for? She is the one who gets dragged out with Polanski. Adrian Ramsey is my MP. I have a lot of respect for him. I feel horrible for him that he is now associated with these people.

They will never give up the name. They rely on well-meaning environmentally-minded low-information voters who aren’t paying attention.

Some in that party now just hate Jewish people and have become emboldened into not bothering to try to hide it anymore.

Adrian Ramsey is in a difficult position now I agree. If I were him I would resign in protest but that's a personal decision of course.

I don't know how Hannah Spencer voted. Hope she did the decent thing and voted against it.
